A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey late on Monday, the country’s emergencies agency said.

The quake, struck at 10:48 pm local time, was felt in several cities including Istanbul and Izmir.

    It was centered in the town of Sindirgi in Balikesir province, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management agency, AFAD.

    The tremor was even felt across parts of Greece, including the island of Lesvos, 146 kilometres away.

    According to Türkiye Today, the proximity of the earthquake to densely populated urban centers like Istanbul, Türkiye’s largest city with over 15 million residents, and Izmir, the country’s third-largest city, raised immediate concerns about potential casualties and structural damage.

    No casualties were reported.
