Pakistan’s security forces are under mounting pressure as simultaneous assaults by Afghan Taliban fighters and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants escalate along the western frontier, top intelligence sources have told CNN-News18. At least six Pakistani soldiers have been killed in fierce clashes near the Orakzai district’s Ghiljo area, as Afghan Taliban units stormed the Maahmoodzai post, triggering one of the deadliest cross-border confrontations in recent months.
According to top intelligence sources, heavy artillery exchanges and precision strikes by Taliban fighters have caused significant damage to Pakistan’s forward positions and communication systems along the volatile Chaman-Spin Boldak border. “Wireless and field communication networks have been hit, hampering coordination among security units,” intelligence sources revealed.

The Friendship Gate — a key crossing point between Balochistan’s Chaman and Afghanistan’s Kandahar province — has reportedly suffered structural damage amid sustained shelling. A young girl on the Pakistani side was injured when stray bullets struck her home, underscoring the growing civilian risk in the border belt.
Military insiders describe a rapidly deteriorating scenario, with Pakistan’s forces now caught between guerrilla-style TTP attacks from within tribal regions and direct Afghan Taliban offensives across the border. “The situation is precarious. Troops are overstretched, taking casualties on both fronts,” intelligence sources told News18.
Sources added that the TTP has intensified ambush-style raids and IED strikes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Afghan Taliban units — many battle-hardened from years of insurgency — are now targeting Pakistani checkposts with precision weaponry. Reports indicate that several Pakistani positions have been overrun or abandoned temporarily due to heavy fire.
The renewed fighting follows weeks of tension after Islamabad accused the Taliban government in Kabul of harbouring TTP militants. Earlier this week, Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir reportedly summoned senior generals at GHQ Rawalpindi, questioning intelligence lapses that allowed coordinated attacks to succeed. According to sources, Munir rebuked field commanders for “failing to anticipate the scale and timing of Taliban operations.”
Analysts say the escalating conflict signals a new phase in Pakistan’s security crisis, where its western frontier has turned into a multi-front battlefield. With Afghan Taliban forces asserting cross-border dominance and TTP insurgents striking from within, Pakistan’s military faces a daunting challenge — one that threatens to stretch its operational capacity to breaking point.
“Unless Islamabad recalibrates its strategy, these clashes could spiral into a prolonged border war,” an intelligence source warned.
