Twin earthquakes struck off the coast of Japan on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The first, a magnitude 7.6 quake, hit 84 km east-northeast of Misawa in Aomori Prefecture at 11.15 pm local time. According to the USGS, it originated at a depth of 53.1 km. At least 5 people were injured following the earthquakes, local media reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami advisory following the tremors. The JMA warned that a tsunami up to three metres (10 feet) high could strike Japan’s northeastern coast.

Tsunami Alert In 3 Prefectures
Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 50 cm (7 to 18 inches) high were observed at several ports, JMA said.
The second earthquake, measuring magnitude 5.5, occurred 96 km east-northeast of Hachinohe, off its coast, with a depth of 44.3 km.
On Japan’s 1–7 seismic intensity scale, the quake registered an “upper 6″ in Aomori Prefecture — a level strong enough to make standing impossible, forcing people to crawl to move. At this intensity, heavy furniture is likely to topple, and wall tiles and windowpanes can break in many buildings, news agency Reuters reported.
Additionally, East Japan Railway has suspended several services in the affected area, which was also struck by the devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake in March 2011.
Utility operators Tohoku Electric Power and Hokkaido Electric Power reported no irregularities at nuclear power plants in the region. However, Tohoku Electric confirmed that thousands of residents were without power.
Japan is among the world’s most earthquake-prone nations, experiencing a tremor roughly every five minutes. Situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and deep ocean trenches, the country accounts for nearly 20% of all earthquakes worldwide that register magnitude 6.0 or higher.
There are no immediate reports of injuries or property damage. Authorities were assessing the situation and monitoring for potential aftershocks.
Magnitude-7 Earthquake Hits Near Alaska-Canada border
Earlier on Saturday, a powerful, magnitude 7 earthquake struck in a remote area near the border between Alaska and the Canadian territory of Yukon. There was no tsunami warning, and there were no immediate reports of damage, news agency AP reported. As per USGS data, the quake struck about 370 kilometers northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and 250 kilometers west of Whitehorse, Yukon.
It was also about 91 kilometers from Yakutat, Alaska, which the USGS said has a population of 662. The quake struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers, the AP report stated. There were several smaller aftershocks.
