A Classic 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Toy Is Making a Comeback on Amazon

Amazon is dipping into the past and bringing the 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playset back into circulation. The classic toy is getting a re-release and since the news about this broke, preorders for it have already taken off. The playset is set to be released on September 1, 2025 for the price of $74.99.

As a child of the early 90s, I have very fond memories of playing with TMNT toys as a kid. Even just looking at this playset is causing uncontrollable waves of nostalgia. I only ever had a few action figures (specifically Donatello), so it’s the design of the Turtles themselves that is really bringing me back. Modern interpretations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are great I think, but nothing can really top a mean-mugging Raphael or Leonardo from the ’80s. At least for me.

We broke the news of this playset going up for preorder on the IGN Deals instagram and it’s clear that Amazon has struck a very specific nostalgic vein with this set. Commenters are chiming in with their remembered love of this set or deep disappointment for not being able to get one themselves when they were young. Now that it’s being re-released, adults now have the chance to relive a childhood moment themselves or together with their kids. And since adults becoming one of the biggest markets in the toy industry, I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if more and more classic toys get brought back. LEGO has also done something similar with the recent Game Boy set that is being sold as an 18+ build.

That’s not to say this playset wouldn’t still be awesome for kids. I have a one-year-old son who is just now starting to show interest in some of my old toys and I can’t help but want to give him some of the fun experiences I experienced during my formative years. He’s still a bit too young for me to introduce him to the 1987 TMNT cartoon series I grew up on, but I will someday. If he ends up being a fan of the same version of the heroes in a half shell I know and love, it’s good to know there are still toy options available for him out there.
