Aaron Jones Sr. Injury Update

Jones sustained his hamstring strain during Minnesota’s Week 2 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, an injury significant enough to land him on injured reserve. The veteran running back was placed on IR on September 16, beginning a mandatory absence that has kept him out of action for over a month.

Under NFL rules, players on injured reserve must miss four complete games, not simply four weeks. With Minnesota’s bye week occurring in Week 6, even though Jones has been out five weeks, he’s just now missed the required four games and is eligible to return for Week 8’s contest.

The timing of the Vikings’ bye week actually worked in Jones’ favor, providing him with over a full month to heal rather than rushing back after exactly four games. Given his extensive history with hamstring injuries throughout his career, the team has taken a cautious approach to ensure complete recovery.

While the team has not provided official confirmation yet, the expectation is that Jones will be activated from injured reserve and play this week. His earliest possible return date is Thursday Night Football on October 23, when the Vikings visit the Los Angeles Chargers.

Recent reports suggest Jones is eyeing that Week 8 return and appears to be on track to come back when first eligible. The extended recovery period should have allowed the 30-year-old veteran to return at full strength rather than risk re-injury by rushing back prematurely.

Jones Fantasy Outlook

The significant question isn’t just when Jones returns, but what role awaits him after Jordan Mason’s impressive performance in his absence. During the first two games of the season, Jones already appeared to have a reduced role compared to his 2024 usage.

In Week 1, Jones managed just eight carries for 23 yards while Mason outcarried him 15-8. Jones did catch all three of his targets for 44 yards and a touchdown, giving him 15.7 PPR points and a top-12 finish despite limited rushing opportunities.

Mason has seized control of the backfield during Jones’ absence, averaging 15.0 carries per game. He’s reached double digit fantasy points in every contest since Jones went down.

Jones will likely resume his starting designation, but Mason should continue serving as the lead runner with Jones mixing in for roughly 8-10 carries plus passing down duties. The Vikings have no incentive to rush their veteran back into a heavy workload, especially considering Mason’s strong performance.

Fantasy managers should expect Jones to be eased back into action rather than immediately resuming his 2024 role. He remains valuable as an RB2 option with upside, particularly in PPR formats where his receiving ability provides additional value, but his ceiling may be capped by Mason’s continued involvement.
