Airtel wins interim relief as Telangana HC halts cable removal

The order comes after Airtel petitioned the court following widespread broadband disruptions caused by the Telangana government’s removal of dangling cables from electric poles after recent electrocution incidents.

The Telangana High Court has asked the Telangana Government, including the power utility Southern Power Distribution Company, not to cut or remove or take any coercive action with regard to optical fibre cables of the telecom company Bharti Airtel Limited.

Acting on a petition by Airtel, the court extended the earlier interim order, asking the Government not to cut the cables.

After a few persons were electrocuted during religious processions last month, the State Government ordered the removal of all the dangling cables from electric poles.

This has led to widespread disruption in broadband services in the State capital. “Lakhs of our customers have been impacted because of the indiscriminate cutting of the cables across the city,” an Airtel executive said.

The High Court has posted the matter to October 30, sending notices to the Central Government for filing a counter.
