A’ja Wilson’s Reaction Goes Viral As Fans Boo WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert

Ever since Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier questioned the leadership of WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert during her team’s exit interviews, criticism toward the league’s top executive has been mounting. Players, coaches, and fans have all voiced frustrations about Engelbert’s approach to league growth, player relations, etc.

That tension came to a dramatic head on Friday night when, moments after the Las Vegas Aces sealed their third championship in four seasons with a 97-86 win over the Phoenix Mercury, the crowd inside Mortgage Matchup Center made their feelings unmistakably clear and A’ja Wilson’s priceless reaction instantly went viral.

What Was A’ja Wilson’s Viral Reaction on Championship Night?

As confetti rained down and the Aces celebrated their championship triumph, Engelbert stepped onto the floor to present the team with the WNBA trophy. But interestingly, instead of cheers, a chorus of boos filled the arena.

The commissioner, who was trying to keep her composure, continued with the ceremony. Yet fans at home caught something even more captivating on ESPN’s broadcast. Standing in the background, Finals MVP Wilson couldn’t hide her amusement.

Her reaction, which was a mix of surprise, laughter, and disbelief, perfectly captured the mood in the arena and spread like wildfire across social media within minutes.

But while her postgame reaction drew laughs online, Wilson’s on-court dominance is what truly defined the night. The Aces’ superstar was unstoppable in Game 4. Wilson dropped 31 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and added four assists and three blocks in the championship-clinching win, which is a stat line that left no doubt about her Finals MVP worthiness.

Over the Finals series, she averaged 28.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and two blocks per game, which led the Aces to their third title and solidified her legacy as one of the league’s all-time greats.

“You have your Mount Rushmore; she’s alone on Everest. There’s no one around,” said Aces head coach Becky Hammon regarding Wilson (as per ESPN).

The game itself was a showcase of Las Vegas’ complete control. They jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter and built a 16-point cushion by halftime. Their dominance peaked in the third quarter when they had the highest lead of the game of 20 points.

Even as the Mercury fought to claw back in the final frame, the Aces’ balanced attack which was capped by 21 points in the fourth quarter proved too much to handle for the Mercury squad.

“I think the evolving of the game … these players are bigger, stronger, faster and more skilled… [Past] dynasties laid the groundwork and showed how winning should be done and really gave a lot to the WNBA insofar as history,” said Hammon regarding her squad.

On Friday night one thing was clear that the Aces are building a dynasty and Wilson is its heart and soul. Yet amid the cheers the loud boos for the commissioner reminded everyone that there’s still a rift between the league and its community.
