Another case of mob violence was reported in Bangladesh, with a 29-year-old Hindu man beaten to death by a crowd in Rajbari district late on Wednesday night, police said. The victim, identified as Amrit Mandal alias Samrat, was assaulted around 11 pm at Hosaindanga Old Market in Pangsha Upazila and was declared dead shortly after the attack.
Confirming the incident, Pangsha Model Police Station officer-in-charge Sheikh Moinul Islam said Amrit Mandal was allegedly accused of extortion by local residents before the situation escalated into mob violence. Police said Amrit Mandal was listed in their records as a local group leader, referred to as “Samrat Bahini”. He was the son of Akshay Mandal, a resident of Hosaindanga village.

Yunus Govt Condemns Killing, Calls It Criminal Clash
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s interim government issued a statement and said that the lynching incident was the result of a violent clash linked to extortion and criminal activity, and not a communal attack.
Calling the reports of communal attack as misleading, the interim government said preliminary investigations and police findings indicate that Mandal was a top criminal who had gone to the Pangsha police station area on Wednesday night to demand extortion money and was killed in clash with local residents.
While condemning the killing, the interim government stressed that it does not support extrajudicial actions, mob violence or unlawful acts under any circumstances. “Legal action will be taken against everyone directly or indirectly involved in this incident,” the statement said.
The government also expressed concern over attempts by certain groups to portray the incident as a communal attack by highlighting the religious identity of the deceased. Such claims were described as baseless and malicious, with the potential to disrupt social harmony and worsen the law-and-order situation.
Calling for restraint, the government urged the public and media to act responsibly and refrain from spreading misleading, provocative or communal narratives.
Second Lynching In A Week
The killing comes just days after another mob lynching in Bangladesh that drew widespread attention. On December 18, factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, after being accused of making derogatory remarks about Islam during a factory event. After his death, the mob allegedly tied his body to a tree and set it on fire.
Unrest In Bangladesh
The Rajbari killing occurred hours before violent protests erupted in Dhaka over the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent student leader. In the aftermath of Sharif Osman Hadi’s killing, some youth leaders were reported to have made provocative anti-India statements. In recent weeks, Bangladeshi security forces have had to stop protesters from marching towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Last week, a mob also pelted the Indian Assistant High Commission building in Chittagong with stones.
