Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam has won the Rangpur-2 seat in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, less than a year after being acquitted in a 1971 war crimes case following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

In May 2025, the Bangladesh Supreme Court overturned his death sentence in connection with atrocities committed during the 1971 Liberation War. A senior figure in Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Azharul Islam had earlier been convicted and sentenced to death on charges including the killing of more than 1,200 people and the rape of 13 women during the war.

His acquittal under the Yunus-led administration was seen as one of the most controversial judicial reversals in recent years.

The Shafiqur Rahman-led Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (JIB) has voiced dissatisfaction over the vote counting process, alleging irregularities in several constituencies.

In a statement, the party claimed that candidates of the 11-party alliance narrowly and suspiciously lost in multiple seats and pointed to what it described as “inconsistencies and fabrications” in the unofficial announcement of results.

“The Election Commission’s reluctance to publish voter turnout percentages and indications that a section of the administration leaned towards a major party undoubtedly raise serious questions about the integrity of the results process,” the JIB said.

According to the latest counting trends, the party and its allies were struggling to secure even 70 seats.

The Election Commission has announced the results for 297 constituencies in Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliament election, confirming a sweeping victory for the BNP-led alliance. Results for three constituencies are still pending, with polling in Chittagong-2 and Chittagong-4 postponed for later announcement, Prothom Alo reported.

Out of the 297 declared seats, the BNP-led alliance won 212. The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami alliance secured 77 seats, while Islami Andolan Bangladesh claimed one seat. Independent candidates won seven seats.

In post-Hasina Bangladesh, women’s representation in Parliament has remained limited despite the country having had women as Prime Ministers for more than three decades.

In the latest elections, only seven women candidates have been elected to the Bangladesh Parliament. Six belong to Tarique Rahman’s BNP, while one contested as an independent after rebelling against the party. The elected women are Afroza Khan Rita (Manikganj-3), Israt Sultana Elen Bhutto (Jhalokati-2), Tahsina Rushdir Luna (Sylhet-2), Shama Obaid (Faridpur-2), Nayab Yusuf Kamal (Faridpur-3), Farzana Sharmin Putul (Natore-1), and Rumin Farhana (Brahmanbaria-2), who ran as an independent.

Bangladesh’s Election Commission said voter turnout in the election stood at 59.44 per cent.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah stated that the commission remained committed to conducting a free, fair and impartial poll. He urged people to overlook any administrative shortcomings and said efforts would be made to organise better elections in the future.

Bangladesh Election Results 2026 Live: National Citizens’ Party (NCP) candidate Md Nahid Islam has won the Dhaka-11 constituency, according to preliminary results, Prothom Alo reported. Contesting with the water-lily bud symbol, he secured a total of 93,872 votes. Meanwhile, his nearest rival, BNP candidate M A Quayum, received 91,833 votes. Nahid Islam won by a margin of 2,039 votes.

According to the Bangladeshi news outlet, announcing the result at around 6:45 am (local time) on Friday, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner (Returning Officer) Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury said voting was held at 163 polling centres in Dhaka-11, including postal ballots. The turnout stood at 45 per cent.
