In a huge blow to Team India, star opener and World No 1 T20I batter Abhishek Sharma is highly likely to miss his team’s second Group A match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Namibia at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Thursday, February 12.
The explosive left-hander has been battling a persistent stomach illness that first surfaced during India’s tournament opener against the USA in Mumbai.
While Abhishek played that match – unsuccessfully, falling for a golden duck – he was notably absent from the field during the second innings, with Sanju Samson stepping in as a substitute fielder.

Sport Ryan ten Doeschate gives update on Abhishek Sharma
Earlier today, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that Abhishek’s recovery has been slower than anticipated.
“Abhi (Abhishek Sharma) has still got a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful he will be available in two days’ time, but he hasn’t recovered yet,” ten Doeschate told reporters during the pre-match press conference.
The concerns deepened when Abhishek skipped the team’s first training session in New Delhi on Tuesday. Sources suggest the team management is inclined to rest him to ensure he is 100% fit for the high-stakes clash against Pakistan on February 15.
Sport Impact on the Playing XI
Abhishek’s likely absence forces a reshuffle at the top of the order.
Sanju Samson’s Return: Samson is the frontrunner to take the opening slot. Despite losing his permanent spot following a lean patch against New Zealand, this presents a massive opportunity for the keeper-batter to prove his mettle on the global stage.
Ishan Kishan’s Role: Ishan Kishan, who opened alongside Abhishek in the first game, will now likely lead the charge with Samson as his new partner.
Sport Better News for the bowling department
While the batting order faces a hiccup, the bowling unit received a boost:
Jasprit Bumrah: After missing the USA game due to fever, the pace spearhead was seen bowling at full tilt in the Delhi nets today, clean-bowling captain Suryakumar Yadav in a fiery spell.
Washington Sundar: Having recovered from a side strain and rib fracture, Sundar has rejoined the squad and is available for selection against Namibia.
