Blazers Star Jrue Holiday Gets Candid on NBA Retirement After Impressive 17-Year Career

After 16 seasons in the NBA, Jrue Holiday has built a career many players can only dream of. From winning championships to being one of the NBA’s most respected defenders, his journey is filled with milestones.

Now entering his 17th season, the Portland Trail Blazers guard is beginning to reflect on the end of the road. Yet, as Holiday explained in a recent conversation, he isn’t ready to stop anytime soon. Instead, he remains focused on competing at the highest level.

Jrue Holiday Opens Up About Retirement Plans

Holiday was drafted back in 2009, and after spending 16 years in the league, which is a milestone very few players ever reach, the question of retirement is expected.

Holiday is not dodging that; instead he is tackling it gracefully. When asked how much longer he wants to play, Holiday didn’t give a set timeline. Instead, he gave a heartfelt response about gratitude and perspective.

“Just kind of going with it,” Holiday shared with DJ Siddiqi on RG.org. “I’ve been blessed enough to play for this long, and I’ve never taken that for granted. I know this is a dream come true for most young kids, but I know 17 years is a dream come true for any 35-year-old who gets a chance to stay as healthy as possible and to play the game that they love. I’ll just continue playing until I can’t anymore.”

The quote perfectly reflects Holiday’s approach to basketball. He understands the rarity of sustaining such a long and productive career, especially in a league where longevity is never guaranteed. The veteran guard has already accomplished more than most, yet his hunger to keep contributing remains strong.

This season will be his first back in Portland since the blockbuster trade that shocked the NBA world. After two years with the Boston Celtics, where he helped them win the 2024 championship, Holiday was shipped to the Blazers in a deal that sent Anfernee Simons to Boston.

For the Celtics, it was a move driven by finances, but for Portland, it was a chance to bring in a proven winner who could mentor their young core.

Holiday’s Impact on the Blazers’ Future

Holiday arrives in Portland with three years and around $101.4 million left on his deal. While his offensive production dipped during his time with the Celtics, his defensive excellence remains unmatched.

A six-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection — with three First-Team and Second-Team nods apiece — he has built a reputation as one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. His ability to guard multiple positions makes him an invaluable piece for a team trying to establish a defensive identity.

Coach Chauncey Billups already emphasizes defense, and with players like Toumani Camara anchoring the roster, adding Holiday strengthens that commitment. He not only brings elite defense, but adaptability as well.

Holiday is a capable playmaker, a dangerous catch-and-shoot threat from three, and known for his two-footed finishing technique that keeps him under control at the rim. His versatility allows him to fit into any system seamlessly.

For the Blazers, the hope is that Holiday’s presence can accelerate the growth of young guards Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. Both players are brimming with potential, and learning alongside a two-time NBA champion gives them a blueprint for success.

Besides, Holiday has also made it clear that his goal is to help Portland win.

“Honestly, to win. Whatever that looks like, if it’s making the playoffs, if it’s having a better record than last season, but it’s to win and bring a culture of winning,” Holiday said.

Portland has the talent to push for at least a Play-In Tournament spot this season, but Holiday’s championship pedigree could be the difference in taking them further. Even if his scoring has slowed, his leadership and defense still rank among the best.

For a young roster looking to build a culture of toughness and resilience, he is the perfect veteran presence.
