The Last Son of Krypton looks set to easily fend off competition from two other old IP revivals that arrived in the marketplace this weekend.
“Superman” is looking like it’ll take in $57 million domestically in its second weekend – a drop of around 54% which is on par with last year’s “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
It’s slightly better than “Thunderbolts” at 56% and far better than “Captain America: Brave New World” at 68% – word of mouth still keeping the buzz going. Its current domestic total sits at $235 million.
Second place is going to “Jurassic World Rebirth” which is headed for $23 million in its third weekend and a drop of 43%. That film now sits at $276 million domestically.
They fended off several newcomers which failed to impress. The legacy sequel “I Know What You Did Last Summer” came in third with an opening of around $13-14 million – the lowest opening in the franchise. Its tight $18 million budget means it’ll likely end in profit, but this isn’t a winner for the studio. A C+ CinemaScore, the lowest in the franchise, won’t help.
A new animated “Smurfs” film starring Rhianna debuted to $12 million which was actually ahead of expectations, but also landed the lowest CinemaScore for a film in the franchise to date – B+. With a $58 million budget, it will need to do good business overseas.
“F1” rounded out the top five, still going strong with a $10 million fourth weekend. It has now grossed $154 million domestically. The other newcomer this week was the politically charged dark comedy “Eddington” which A24 released to a tepid $4.8 million in seventh place.
