Guneet Monga reveals Karan Johar gave The Lunchbox its GAME-CHANGING headline; says “He spent Rs. 6.50 cr on P&A for our Rs. 10 cr indie film…helped us get 500 screens”

Entertainment Guneet Monga had a wonderful conversation with Karan Johar about the production aspects, taking Indian films to a global level and a lot more. One of her biggest breakthrough films was The Lunchbox (2013), starring the late Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimrat Kaur. Guneet explained how she raised money for the film and how Karan Johar came on board. Guneet Monga reveals Karan Johar gave The Lunchbox its GAME-CHANGING headline; says “He spent Rs. 6.50 cr on P&A for our Rs. 10 cr indie film…helped us get 500 screens” Guneet Monga said, “A lot of credit for The Lunchbox working in India goes to Dharma Productions for their genuine marketing. When it was being made, I was told, ‘Isko kaun dekhega?’. Earlier, it was a Rs. 10 crore budget film. Raising such an amount was difficult in India. When we raised Rs. 5.50 crores in France and Germany, the project became commercially viable. I was able to recover the balance Rs. 4.50 crores through MG within 48 hours of the Cannes premiere! India’s rights were yet to be sold, but its collections were going to be a bonus.” She revealed, “I reached out to Karan. He was also in Cannes for the premiere of Bombay Talkies (2013). I saw him having a meal. I introduced myself; this was my first meeting with him. I told him, ‘You are the master of love stories and I feel I have made a beautiful love story. It’s broken out here in Cannes. We have sold the rights of the world. Would you please watch it?’. That’s how our friendship began. He gave me his number and asked me to show him the film in India.” Guneet continued, “Once I returned to India, his film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) had been released. A week later, he saw the film and loved it. He walked out and gave us the film’s tagline – Can you fall in love with somebody you have never met? Then he called me to his office and asked me, ‘What do you need?’. I said, ‘A big release. We have done 100 screen releases and we can do that. I want a 500 screen plus release’.” Guneet Monga further said, “He then called up UTV Motion Pictures. He even put in Rs. 6.50 crores of P&A. That was huge money for a film like this. It was still a film with no songs, had dialogues in English etc. That question of ‘Kaun aayega dekhne’ was valid even then. However, I feel we judge our audiences a lot.” At another point in the interview, Guneet also explained how she raised money from France, “I realized that there was a treaty between India and France, which was signed way back in 1985. I was the first one to use the treaty for co-production in 2011-12. This is how I raised 50% of the budget from France (smiles).” Also Read: Was there tension between Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui on the sets of The Lunchbox? Was there tension between Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui on the sets of The Lunchbox? Guneet Monga BREAKS silence: “It was a part of the process…not significant…”

During the release of the film, there were reports that there was tension between Irrfan and Nawazuddin. Guneet was asked about this aspect. Was there tension between Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui on the sets of The Lunchbox? Guneet Monga BREAKS silence: “It was a part of the process…not significant…” Guneet Monga didn’t deny the tensions between the two talented actors. However, she said, “Both have their own format of working. I think the tension and love are in the script. And they both embraced it (smiles). It was a joy to see them work. It was one of their best performances. The way Irrfan sir played the khadoos, strict but so endearing man…it definitely (spilled onto the set). Nawaz bhai had to always be the over-pleaser. It was a part of his character.” She added, “It was a joy to work with both of them. It was magical. I am very grateful that we were able to create this film. Baaki on set aur off set toh (chalte rehta hai)!” She clarified, “It was not something that was significant. It was a part of the process. Both are genius actors. We saw them at play.” When asked if the tiff between them caused her any tension, Guneet Monga revealed, “Not even once. We have worked so much with Nawaz bhai. We did Haraamkhor (2017) and so many other movies. It was our first film with Irrfan sir. Aur independent film mein aap kitna khafa ho jaaoge? Paise toh hai nahin (laughs).” Guneet Monga revealed how Karan Johar contributed not just in presenting the film in India but also in another way, “He walked out and gave us the film’s tagline – Can you fall in love with somebody you have never met? Sohum Shah’s Tumbbad 2 is in making; Why you should revisit Tumbbad

Entertainment There have been talks of Tumbbad 2 being in the making. Before that, here’s why you should revisit the masterpiece, that introduced us to the folk of Hastar. 1/8 Entertainment Before Tumbbad 2, lets revisit the cinematic masterpiece that started it all It has been seven years since Sohum Shah gave us a visually staggering cult classic that defied genres, Tumbbad. The film mixed up the lines between reality, mythology, and morality. As there are conversations about Tumbbad 2 being released, here’s a look at what made the original film work so well. 2/8 Entertainment The plotline is derived by the very things that make us human A world as immersive and distinct as Tumbbad has been made up by very few films. The film is rooted in mythology, and it tells the story of things that are inherent to humanity as we know it, things like gods, gold, greed, and wealth. The ever-wet village wasn’t just a backdrop to build a story on; it was instead a living, breathing character in itself. 3/8 Entertainment Sohum Shah’s vision made the film shine The way Sohum Shah acted in the film, it was hard to believe that he was not living the life of his character himself. With numerous creative stagnations and unrelenting perfectionism, the film took six years to make. Sohum Shah’s unrelenting hardwork and his unstaggering faith in the project are what saved the film from turning into a forgotten experiment. 4/8 Entertainment Visuals that redefined the way Indian cinematography works Indian horror rarely seemed this poetic before Tumbbad came out. Every single scene, from the cold dark raining village to the warm glowing gold, felt like a painting. With his cinematography, Pankaj Kumar has truly set an example for filmmakers around the globe. 5/8 Entertainment The sound production made you live the story Ajay-Atul’s haunting sound effects, with a holistic and environmental sound atmosphere, made sure that the horror for Tumbbad went beyond just jumpscares. The sound and music of the film weren’t just heard by you; you lived it. It crawled under your skin, inside your nerves, and made you feel like you were a part of Hastar’s womb. 6/8 Entertainment Took Indian folklore to an international level The film premiered at Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, making it go beyond just a genre film. India’s most bold visual experiment, it was applauded for its stunning looks all over the world. Tumbbad made sure that in the world of horror films, India would walk with its head held high. 7/8 Entertainment Tumbbad’s story still stands true At the core of it, Tumbbad wasn’t just a film about monsters and gods; it was a film about humanity. It was about us, our insatiable greed, and our inability to stop wanting more. It has been seven years since the release of the film, and even today, the film serves as a mirror for our reality, and that fact is still more haunting than any other horror element of the film. 8/8 Entertainment Tumbbad 2 is on the making After seven years of reshaping the way Indian folklore horror works, the filmmakers are all set to revisit the myths and stories of Hastar. Actor-producer Sohum Shah has confirmed that Sohum Shah Films is collaborating with Pen Studios, led by Jayantilal Gada, for Tumbbad 2. The sequel promises to go deeper; deeper in the myths, deeper in the horror, deeper in the visuals, and deeper into Hastar’s womb. Don’t Miss Out on the Latest Updates. Dua Lipa Brings Out Gwen Stefani for ‘Don’t Speak’ Duet: ‘You Lucky F-ckers!’

Entertainment “I wanted to dive into one of my personal heroes. One of my favorite artists, and who I grew up listening to my whole life,” Lipa said, introducing the No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani and Dua Lipa Madison Phipps Dua Lipa has made it a tradition of singing a song made famous by the area she performs at every night — and Wednesday night at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles was no exception. During her fourth sold-out Radical Optimism tour stop in the city, Lipa welcomed Gwen Stefani to the stage for a performance of No Doubt‘s “Don’t Speak. Before Stefani joined Lipa onstage, the “Houdini” singer shared some sweet words about the No Doubt frontwoman. “I wanted to dive into one of my personal heroes. One of my favorite artists, and who I grew up listening to my whole life,” Lipa told the crowd. “Someone who’s influenced my music, my style, someone who I love as a performer, and someone who constantly keeps redefining herself and music. I just absolutely love her.” She continued: “This incredible woman is here tonight. And so, L.A., you lucky fuckers, get to have the one and only, Gwen Stefani!” The performance came near the middle of the show after playing her Radical Optimism underrated gem, “These Walls,” and while surrounded by her entire band. Stefani and Lipa have shown love to each other in the past. The pair posed for photos together at the iHeart Music Festival last September, during which Stefani called Lipa the “prettiest girl in the world.” Stefani even joined Lipa for the Mark Ronson Remix of “Physical” back in 2020. “We basically contacted Gwen and her team to try and clear the sample for ‘Hollaback Girl,’ for Club Future Nostalgia,” Lipa told Apple Music in 2021. “And I was like, ‘Maybe we should just ask, put a feeler out, see if she wants to do something.’ And she loved Mark Ronson’s remix of ‘Physical.’ And she was like, ‘I’d love to jump on this.’ I’m like, ‘Hell yeah, let’s go. This is surreal.’” Lipa has four shows left on the U.S. leg of her tour: she’s set to play twice in San Francisco and then twice more in Seattle before a run in South America and Mexico through November and early December. Earlier this week, she played covers of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac and “California Dreamin” by the Mamas and the Papas, and performed “All Night Long” with Lionel Richie on Tuesday evening. When she started her run in Melbourne, Australia, she welcomed Troye Sivan for “Ruish” and Vance Joy for “Riptide,” and throughout the tour has been joined onstage by Charli XCX, Angus Stone, Mustafa the Poet, Chaka Khan, and Nile Rodgers. Drake Loses Defamation Suit Over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’

Entertainment A judge dismissed the lawsuit filed against Universal Music Group, stating Lamar’s allegedly defamatory lyrics qualified as “nonactionable opinion” Drake and Kendrick Lamar Mark Blinch/Getty Images; Kevin Winter/Getty Images/The Recording Academy Drake has lost his defamation suit against Universal Music Group (UMG) over Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” with a federal judge ruling that the allegedly defamatory statements in the hit diss track qualify as “nonactionable opinion.”  In a ruling published Thursday, Oct. 9, Judge Jeannette A. Vargas stated: “The issue in this case is whether ‘Not Like Us’ can reasonably be understood to convey as a factual matter that Drake is a pedophile or that he has engaged in sexual relations with minors. In light of the overall context in which the statements in the Recording were made, the Court holds that it cannot.”  In a statement shared with Rolling Stone, a UMG spokesperson said, “From the outset, this suit was an affront to all artists and their creative expression and never should have seen the light of day. We’re pleased with the court’s dismissal and look forward to continuing our work successfully promoting Drake’s music and investing in his career.” A rep for Drake did not immediately return a request for comment.  Drake filed his lawsuit in January, alleging that “Not Like Us” was “intended to convey the specific, unmistakable, and false factual allegation that Drake is a criminal pedophile.” Notably, however, the rapper chose to sue UMG — which also releases Drake’s music — rather than Lamar directly. He claimed the label defamed him by using “every weapon in its arsenal” to turn “Not Like Us” into a hit — including allegedly seeding it with fake bot streams — because it “understood” that the song’s “inflammatory and shocking allegations were a gold mine.” UMG denied the allegations and moved to dismiss the suit. In tossing the suit, Judge Vargas compared rap diss tracks to forums like YouTube and X where people are able to spout off, as opposed to anything resembling journalistic reporting or straight news. “The average listener is not under the impression that a diss track is the product of a thoughtful or disinterested investigation, conveying to the public fact-checked verifiable content,” she wrote.  She also said the defamation claims needed to be examined within the context of the specific Drake-Kendrick rap battle, “in which both participants exchanged progressively caustic, inflammatory insults and accusations.” Judge Vargas even cited the song Drake released before “Not Like Us,” “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which contained an AI-generated Tupac voice trying to goad Lamar into talking about Drake “liking young girls.”  While Drake tried to argue that “Not Like Us” should be considered as a single entity, Judge Vargas rejected this notion, saying it “must be placed in its appropriate factual context.” She wrote that Lamar’s lines — such as, “Say Drake, I hear you like ‘em young” — “must be assessed” in relation to “Taylor Made Freestyle,” stating, “The similarity in the wording suggests strongly that this line is a direct callback to Drake’s lyrics in the prior song.”  The judge also addressed Drake’s allegations that UMG tried to artificially inflate the popularity of “Not Like Us” through fake streams, and found those claims lacking, too. She said Drake’s evidence essentially amounts to “Tweets by individual users and reporting from fans,” and called his “reliance on online comments and reporting insufficient to meet the plausibility standard.”  From Rolling Stone US. Return to Westeros With Trailer for ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’

Entertainment Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk for short) Steffan Hill/HBO HBO has debuted a trailer and release date for the first new Game of Thrones series in three years, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The clip premiered at New York Comic Con on Oct. 9,  teasing the six-episode season set to premiere Jan. 18. The series will star Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, or Dunk. HBO describes the series, “A century before the events of Game of Thrones,” when “Two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.” The series’ co-creator and author of the original Game of Thrones books, George R.R. Martin told Entertainment Weekly he’s thrilled with season one. “Nobody is thinking about magic,” he told the publication about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. “This could basically be 14th century Britain,” he said. “This is hard nose, grind it out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch. It’s a wonderful place to be. We are ground up in this series, we are starting right at the bottom. We’re not with the lords and ladies, the kings and queens.” The forthcoming season adapts its storyline form “The Hedge Knight”, the first novella from Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the cast of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will include Edward Ashley as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Youssef Kerkour as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Plummer, Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and Henry Ashton as Daeron Targaryen.
