Emma Watson Says Conversation With J.K. Rowling About Anti-Trans Views ‘Was Never Made Possible’

Entertainment The author once said she would “never forgive” the franchise leads for standing against her, but the actress still doesn’t believe Rowling should be treated as “disposable” Emma Watson attends the Soho House Awards on Sept. 7, 2023. Arturo Holmes/Getty Images Six years have passed since Emma Watson last appeared in a film, and nearly 15 years have passed since the Harry Potter film franchise concluded. In that time, the actress has ruminated on her relationship with it from the perspective gained with distance. During a recent appearance on On Purpose With Jay Shetty, the actress explained how she’s made space to still value Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling despite having been publicly denounced, alongside Daniel Radcliffe, by the author for standing against her anti-trans stance. “I really don’t believe that by having had that experience, and holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson said. “I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish. I just don’t think these things are either/or.” She added: “It’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with. And I think that’s a very, very important way for me that I need to be able to move through life. … I guess where I’ve landed is it’s not so much what we say or what we believe, but very often how we say it. That’s really important and that’s really frustrating and not what you want to hear when you’re really angry and upset with someone.” Watson explained that she doesn’t want to perpetuate the idea “of throwing out people or that people are disposable,” and she keeps the door open to reconnect with Rowling primarily because “a conversation was never made possible.” Until then, she’s being careful about how she discusses the matter publicly. “I just don’t want to say anything that continues to weaponize a really like toxic debate and conversation,” she added. “It is why I don’t comment or continue to comment. Not because I don’t care about her or about the issue, but because the way that the conversation is being had feels really painful to me.” Radcliffe’s response to Rowling saying she would never forgive him and Watson was similar. “It makes me really sad, ultimately,” Radcliffe said last year. “I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.” He added: “I’d worked with the Trevor Project for 12 years and it would have seemed like, I don’t know, immense cowardice to me to not say something. I wanted to try and help people that had been negatively affected by the comments. And to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everybody associated with the Potter franchise … I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people.” Watson learned to take the good with the bad after Harry Potter, too. When she ventured into other roles, she was surprised to see that it wasn’t as community-based as the beloved franchise she’d spent a decade of her life making. I was coming to those sets with an expectation that I think I had developed on Harry Potter, which was that we were, the people I worked with were going to be my family, and that we were going to be lifelong friends,” she said. “That was a very painful experience for me outside of Harry Potter and in Hollywood, like, bone breaking, really painful, because most people don’t come to those environments looking for friendships … I found, the rejection really painful. I think it was so unusual to make a set of films for 12 years and we were a community. I took that as an expectation into my other workplaces and I just got my ass kicked. I really did. It broke me.” From Rolling Stone US. Read More

Call 5 Seconds of Summer a Boy Band All You Want,  But Don’t Call This a Comeback

Entertainment The pop-rock stalwarts bring Rolling Stone into the bizarre and wonderful world of their sixth album, EVERYONE’S A STAR! — whose lead single, “NOT OK,” is out today This past weekend, cryptic posters popped up around the world reading “Your Favorite Boy Band Is Coming Back,” along with a URL: YourFavoriteBoyBand.com.  It wasn’t immediately clear who the red and yellow flyers belonged to, but the site was soon updated to include a quiz to help confused visitors figure it out. It asked users about their preferred singing competition series as well as boy-band archetypes — the loud one, the quiet one, the funny one, the wild one — and dress codes, from skinny jeans to all-white outfits and oversize streetwear. Every combination of responses led to the same answer: “Your favorite boy band is 5 Seconds of Summer.” It only took them almost 15 years, but now, the Australian pop-rock band is coming around to the label on their sixth studio album, EVERYONE’S A STAR! (out Nov. 14) — just not in the way you might think. When they broke through more than a decade ago, 5SOS were, in their own estimation, not a boy band. Back then, they were teenagers opening stadium shows for One Direction, with wardrobes consisting almost solely of band tees and black skinny jeans. The four-piece were dead set on proving they really were a pop-punk band. Their first two albums, 2014’s 5 Seconds of Summer and 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good, reflected the growing pains of coming of age and being misunderstood. They wrote love songs and wrapped flirty teenage nonsense in perfect pop hooks, like on “She Looks So Perfect” and “End Up Here,” for an audience of primarily young women who lived for it — and them. It wasn’t too far off from the boy-band blueprint, except their songs were backed with live instruments they played themselves.  “We had these very clear characters, you could pick us out from a shadow or draw a caricature of us very easily,” frontman Luke Hemmings says of the band’s early career. “I wanted some of that again. What does that look like now?” In recent years, 5SOS have chronicled their deepest anxieties and formative relationships on introspective, supercharged pop-rock records. It started with Youngblood, the 2018 album where they came to the realization that pop is what they’ve actually been best at all along — with the six-times-platinum single “Youngblood” to prove it — and continued with industrial grit on CALM in 2020, followed by the pristine and arena-ready 5SOS5 in 2022.  In 2023, the band celebrated the full scope of this evolution with the 5 Seconds of Summer Show, an extensive 10th-anniversary tour that included sold-out stops at NYC’s Madison Square Garden and the Forum in L.A. Their set featured elaborate skits, mock infomercials, and comically large, confetti-blasting condiment bottles. They revived songs they hadn’t performed in years, including the ultimate boy-band-coded 5SOS single and “pick me” final boss “Heartbreak Girl.” The run reminded them of the carefree, larger-than-life versions of themselves they discovered when they first started out and had nothing to lose other than their pop-punk street cred.  On EVERYONE’S A STAR!, they explore what it would be like to feel that self-assured, exhilarated, and unrestrained all of the time. “I wanted to evolve the tongue-in-cheek thing that you hear on the first record,” drummer Ashton Irwin says. The song that set the album in motion, “No.1 Obsession,” unlocked the “reckless abandon” of their youth, Hemmings explains. “We wrote as teenage boys and ended up having some crazy lyrics, but with 15 years of wisdom and taste under the belt.” There are no one-liners about American Apparel underwear or their therapists being kinda hot, as there were early in their career; but there are sharp interrogations of parasocial relationships, what bassist Calum Hood calls “constructs of the human condition in the digital age,” and the often expendable nature of pop stardom.  Within a few hours of the “Your Favorite Boy Band Is Coming Back” ads going up, most were thoroughly dismantled, having been ripped down, covered up, or claimed by eager fans. 5SOS didn’t intend for their marketing material to become so meta, but the irony isn’t lost on them. The boy-band posters got a sort of boy-band-industry treatment. “Being in the pop world in a band, or a boy band, you attach your self-worth to how many people are looking at you, and how people feel about you as a person, as a musician,” Hemmings says. “You sort of don’t know who you are without whatever that is, and you can feel disposable.”  This is the other side of EVERYONE’S A STAR!. In magnifying their most high-spirited traits, 5SOS also intensified the tension, unease, and anxieties that built up beneath the surface. “It’s so fun to write about the weirdness of our experience, but also the Frankenstein perception of what a boy band is [and] the emasculation of it,” Irwin says. “Calling grown men a boy band is almost like pointing at a 30-year-old and telling them they’re in high school — it kind of feels humiliating. It’s nice to bark back at that concept.”  5SOS threw everything at the wall and, guitarist Michael Clifford says, thought: “Let’s make it look fucking ridiculous.” They say they pulled inspiration from extravagant Y2K aesthetics in the visuals — gnarly frosted tips, retro punk fashion, and an overload of colors — and leaned further into irony and satire in their songwriting. “Being in this long enough, and knowing our fan base long enough, we can talk about the ups and downs of not just ourselves as humans, but the course of our career,” Clifford says. “The part that I’m enjoying the most about it is touching on the irony of our real-life story, sort of exaggerated heavily into this fictional world that we can kind of create with the way that it looks and sounds.” They sink their teeth in deep on “NOT OK,” the album’s thunderous lead single, out today. The relentlessly pulsating tempo of the record is tailor-made for the most full-throttle parts of 5SOS’

How ‘Sabar Bonda’ Created A Rural Romance Story Without A Soundtrack

Entertainment Rohan Kanawade opens up about the makings of the Marathi romance drama, which is set for its theatrical release on Sept. 19 onwards Rohan Parashuram Kanawade’s Sabar Bonda, co-produced with Neeraj Churi, created history, becoming the first Indian film in the fiction feature category to win a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The Marathi language drama unravels a tender, romantic saga through the eyes of its lead pair, Anand (Bhushan Manoj) and Balya (Suraaj Suman). Distributed by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media, it is currently on a wider theatrical release across India.  Set against the liminal pastoral plains of rural Maharashtra, this love story interestingly unfolds amidst a ten-day mourning period. The protagonist, Anand, returns to his ancestral village, a place infused with the stillness of time. What follows is a slow yet endearing rekindling between him and his childhood friend, Balya, as they navigate love, loss, and companionship in its tenderest form. It also offers a rare positive lens on queer familial support, a refreshing take that also serves an imminent need of the hour.  From the very beginning, the intent was to color inside the lines. No background soundscape, static camerawork, and a not-so-glamorous location. Yet, the strategy paid off.  Kanawade’s tryst with storytelling can be traced back to his parents. His father first introduced him to the magic of cinema, and even as a child, he was always more fascinated by technical aspects like projectors and speakers. Later, a well-written chapter in a school textbook sparked his appetite for writing. But it wouldn’t be until years later, while working as an interior designer, that he took his first foray into the world of filmmaking after a colleague prodded him to make a short film.  “We did not know how to use software or even edit,” he remarked. However, on a run-down 1.2 megapixel camera, Kanawade commenced his DIY directorial era, that too with horror films. Slowly, he fell in love with the process of creating: “After coming from the office, I used to either invest my time in writing a screenplay or gather some friends to scout potential shoot locations in the neighborhood,” he stated. Recognizing the spark, his late father encouraged him to take the plunge and dive headfirst into the world of cinema.  Sabar Bonda, his fourth cinematic feature, was born out of semi-autobiographical experiences. Like Anand, Kanawade also lost his dad. Visiting his ancestral roots as a queer man, he’d always wondered what love would look or sound like against a rural backdrop. Unfailingly immersive, the film invites you, as the viewer, to step into the story. From distant shots and an ambient natural soundscape, one gets the most authentic point of view of the emotional pulse. Describing the camera as “observing rather than intervening,” like a neighbor overhearing a quarrel through walls, Kanawade emphasized the use of sound over dialogue to build anticipation. Instead of an instrumental backing, there’s the rustling of leaves amidst the gentle afternoon breeze, the clashing of utensils amidst fights, and the bleating of goats—a gentle rural pianissimo that serves as the sonic backbone. “I took that decision even before I started writing the script. There is the silence of nature, the wind; those things are more interesting than any other background music, you will not find in those libraries of sound.” The sound team, consisting of Anirban Borthakur, Naren Chandavarkar (Sound Design), Mandar Kamalapurkar (Location Sound), Boloy Kumar Doloi and Rahul Karpe (Sound Mixing), worked tirelessly along with Kanawade to bring this sonic vision into reality. A still from the film From Michael Haneke’s off-screen violence to hearing people fight while growing up in the slums of Mumbai, Kanawade’s surroundings always had an unintentional sonic influence. “I wanted to ground the film in the real world, to let the audience’s imagination do the rest,” he explains. Anand is not alone in this house; there is life happening around him.” His sound designers, Naren Chandavarkar and Anirban Borthakur, later traveled back to the village to record authentic sounds, layering them into the film.  Likewise, the sexuality of the characters is never used as a major catalyst. It almost comes across as second nature. For instance, Balya’s character, who is very comfortable with his queerness, is able to escape heteronormative standards under normal circumstances. “My mom had mentioned how farmers in her village were not getting brides due to skewed sex ratios. I found this to be an interesting layer to add to Balya’s character. He is a simple farmer and happily unmarried. That way, he did not need a reason to come out to his parents either.” Symbolism, too, found its way in through personal roots. The cactus pear, central to a moment of intimacy in the film, was derived from Kanawade’s childhood memories of his mother’s stories. “I remembered my mom telling me about cactus pears when I was a very small kid, and whenever I used to go to my uncle’s village”, he explained. Though he never saw the fruit as a child, he was acquainted with it through descriptions — dulcet, fleshy, and helmed by a thorny exterior. “What kind of fruit will Balya bring for Anand? I did not want regular fruits. Rediscovering it years later while writing Sabar Bonda, he realized it mirrored his characters. “Anand is around his relatives; he’s stiff and harsh, like a cactus plant. But when Balya brings him the fruit, with the thorns plucked out, he enjoys it fully,” he said. Just like how cactuses endure harsh terrains and bear tender fruits, these characters were also going through hardships and pressure while navigating grief and love. A paradox within itself, the fruit became a powerful metaphor, enough to lend the film its title. Grounded in realism, grief, and simplicity, the film captures what Kanawade describes as a love story between two men at its core. “Everyone could understand what’s going on without us actually using the term ‘gay,’” he remarked. A filmmaker first and foremost,

SCOOP: The real reason why Aneet Padda replaced Kiara Advani in Dinesh Vijan’s Shakti Shalini

Entertainment While Maddock Films have denied the development, our sources have confirmed the presence of Aneet Padda in Shakti Shalini. The actress has stepped in place of Kiara Advani, who was earlier announced to lead the project in the titular role. The replacement of the star cast has started a conversation around the reason for the same. SCOOP: The real reason why Aneet Padda replaced Kiara Advani in Dinesh Vijan’s Shakti Shalini Very reliable sources have confirmed that Aneet Padda has replaced Kiara Advani for two reasons, the major one being that Kiara Advani’s dates were not aligning with the timelines of the Universe. A source close to Bollywood Hungama informed, “Shakti Shalini must start by the end of 2025, and Kiara’s diary is blocked. She is the busiest actor at the moment, as her diary is frozen till Mid-2026. That aside, the character arc in the final script is the coming of age of a mid-20s girl, and Kiara was initially promised a slightly mature part. Keeping both factors in mind, Kiara Advani decided to back out of the film, making way for Aneet Padda.” An official announcement around Aneet Padda’s involvement will be made soon, but the stakeholders have parted ways on a very positive note. “Kiara and Dinesh Vijan share a great bond, and they will definitely team up again in the near future.
