Anshuman Jha-owned First Ray Films completes 10 years, announces slate of six bold new projects

Entertainment In a country where independent film companies rarely survive the first few years, First Ray Films has quietly done the unthinkable — thrived for a decade. And not by playing safe. This indie house has built its reputation on high-concept, first-of-their-kind stories – from India’s first Social Media Thriller Mona_Darling (2016 – AmazonPrime), to the country’s first mainstream LGBTQ+ road trip film Hum Bhi Akele, Tum Bhi Akele (2020 – JioHotStar), to the world’s first animal-lover vigilante actioner Lakadbaggha (2023 – BMSstream) . First Ray Films, is India’s only start-up independent film production company to have carved a niche in delivering high-concept cinema and making space for themselves. Anshuman Jha-owned First Ray Films completes 10 years, announces slate of six bold new projects Now, as it enters its second decade, First Ray Films isn’t slowing down — it’s doubling down. The company just dropped a dynamic slate of 6 films over the next 12 months. 3 to release theatrically over the next 6 months & 3 go into production. The line-up kicks off with Anshuman Jha’s directorial debut – the bizarre black comedy thriller – Lord Curzon Ki Haveli followed by Harish Vyas’s heartwarming father-son coming-of-age tale Hari Ka Om and lastly – the much-awaited sequel Lakadbaggha 2, which wrapped shoot earlier this year. The above films will be seeing a theatrical release over the next 6 months. Alongside these theatrical releases, the studio will roll out three new productions, which go on floors in 2026 with three debutant film-makers in Hindi, along with launching two fresh faces in a unique love story. Coming up in 2026: three fresh productions — a new feature with award-winning firebrand film-maker, a project titled Bajrangi with auteur Parth Saurabh (Pokhar Ke Dunu Paar), and the debut feature Ovi & The Monk from Emerson Boston Graduate Jasraj Padhaye. 1. Ovi & The Monk – When the world shut down, his heart opened up. In the wake of his father’s loss during the pandemic, a brave young boy(Ovi) treks across the Himalayas to reunite a stranded dog(Monk) with its owner — discovering compassion, courage, and duty along the way. 2. Bajrangi – Set in the heartland of Bihar, this raw and earthy drama redefines the meaning of service in a changing India, offering a fresh lens on tradition and duty. 3. A new ‘untitled’ genre feature(Noir-thriller) set in Mumbai at the cusp of the millennium, with an award-winning firebrand Indian film maker about twins “Independent film making is about faith and fire,” says Anshuman Jha — actor, producer, and founder of First Ray Films. Speaking on the milestone, Anshuman said: “I have always believed that films don’t fail, budgets fail. For us to have survived for over a decade is a testament to the audiences who are willing to embrace stories that are fresh, disruptive, and honest. I am deeply grateful to our investors whose faith has kept us going – their belief proves that films can not only make a cultural impact but also be a profitable game in the long run, much like what A24 has shown globally. My hope is to turn it into an ecosystem that survives beyond me. We aren’t creating projects, we are creating honest cinema – in collaboration with talent from all around the globe – which will stand the test of time – hopefully. Our slate is bold, disruptive & hopefully unforgettable.” With this line-up, First Ray Films reaffirms its position as a rare, uncompromising voice in India’s film ecosystem — one that places storytelling, risk-taking, and originality above all else. Robert Redford, Oscar-Winning Actor and Director, Dead at 89

Entertainment Sundance Film Festival founder was also lifelong activist whose films amplified social and environmental causes and indicted the political system Robert Redford, an Oscar-winning actor and director whose passion for activism led to the formation of the Sundance Institute and its formidable film festival, died on Tuesday morning at his Utah home. He was 89. Redford’s publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed his death to Rolling Stone, but did not specify a cause. “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah – the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Berger said. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.” A heartthrob with a soulful spirit, Redford could easily play dreamboats who captured the collective imagination – he was a wholly credible Jay Gatsby – but there was also within him a dogged determination to seek out riskier projects that challenged him as an actor and subverted his golden-boy visage. After becoming a star in the 1970s thanks to hits that ran the gamut from expert escapism (The Sting) to topical political thrillers (All the President’s Men), Redford transitioned into directing, winning Best Director for his 1980 debut Ordinary People before going on to helm a string of critically acclaimed dramas such as A River Runs Through It and Quiz Show. And through his nurturing of the Sundance Film Festival, he helped boost the careers of fledgling filmmakers such as the Coen brothers, David O. Russell and Quentin Tarantino. But wherever his passions took him, he remained a Southern California kid who resisted the trappings of his lifelong stardom. “There was nothing at the end of the rainbow for me here,” Redford told Esquire in 2013 of his hometown. “Hollywood was not a place I dreamed of getting to. I never could take seriously the obsession people have about being a celebrity or getting to Hollywood – I was born next door.” Born in Santa Monica in the summer of 1936, Charles Robert Redford Jr. moved with his family to Van Nuys as a boy. An unfocused student – biographer Michael Feeney Callan claimed that, during Redford’s high school graduation, he “sat at the back of the assembly hall, reading Mad magazine” – he went to the University of Colorado Boulder for baseball. But the arts soon occupied his time, as well as partying. Redford was kicked out after a year: “One of the reasons I was asked to leave was that I was having too much fun ,” he admitted to ThinkProgress in 2012. “ I spent too much time in the mountains, and I didn’t spend enough time studying.”   He traveled around Europe and then set his sights on New York to focus on acting, working in theater and on television. He appeared on Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and a TV adaptation of The Iceman Cometh, earning an Emmy nomination in 1963 for his performance in The Voice of Charlie Pont. By the mid-1960s, Redford was starting to land steady film work, winning a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer – Male in 1966. One of his first major movie successes was in the adaptation of Neil Simon’s play Barefoot in the Park, in which he reprised his role on Broadway as the uptight newlywed Paul Bratter. But he cemented his stardom with 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, one of the most popular of the revisionist Westerns, which starred Redford alongside Paul Newman, who would remain one of his closest friends until his death in 2008. The two men played wisecracking outlaws who seemed to be thumbing their nose at the romantic, rose-colored notion of the Old West, and in his role as the Sundance Kid, Redford articulated his resistance to mythmaking that would become a central tenet of his career. He parlayed that success into a string of well-liked films, including the Western drama Jeremiah Johnson and his smash reunion with Newman, the Best Picture-winning heist picture The Sting. But Redford always bristled at Hollywood fame, wanting to be sure he was still making worthwhile movies and not just star vehicles. “I started to get uncomfortable. I felt I wasn’t free to do other things,” he would later say. “So I’d go to Warner Bros. and say, ‘I’d like to make a film about the election process – about how we elect somebody based on cosmetics rather than substance – and call it The Candidate.’ They’d say, ‘If you do this larger film, we’ll let you make it.’ That allowed me to make small films within the studio system.” Indeed, a movie like 1972’s The Candidate, in which he plays a blank slate of a senatorial hopeful, has only proved more prescient in its indictment of the American political system, and he followed it up with other films critical of the U.S. government, including All the President’s Men (about the Watergate cover-up) and Three Days of the Condor (a thriller about a CIA conspiracy). His willingness to look critically at his homeland had stemmed from being challenged by Parisians while he was studying art in France in the late 1950s. “[I was] beginning to realize that there was mythology about my own country given to me – and that there was a wonderful country there, which I still believe there is – but it was a different one than the sloganeering that was going on about the country,” Redford told Democracy Now!. “And I began to see the other side of it and think. And I felt that there was a story to be told – there are really a series of good stories about what’s the story beneath the story you were given about your own country.” Redford tried his hand at directing for 1980’s Ordinary People, a chronicle of an emotionally distant family demolished by tragedy, which went on to win four Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. Over the next several decades, he would continue to direct, often focusing on social and political issues such as the corrosive power of television (Quiz Show), American foreign policy (Lions for Lambs) and the shortcomings of our legal system (The Conspirator). Exclusive: Ritviz Announces New Album ‘Kurta Saree’

Entertainment The first single “DHA,” dropping Sept. 19, introduces the tabla-driven sound that will anchor Ritviz’s upcoming album, set to release in 2026 Ritviz has officially announced his next album, Kurta Saree, slated for release in 2026. The project arrives four years after his debut full-length, Mimmi, and marks an ambitious new chapter for the Pune-born producer and singer, who established himself as one of India’s most-streamed independent artists after his breakout. The album’s lead single, “DHA,” is set to drop on Sept. 19. Centered around the tabla and threaded with elements of synth-pop, bass house, UK garage, and club-ready production, the track sets the tone for Kurta Saree. Ritviz first rose to prominence in 2017 with “Udd Gaye,” a viral hit that has since amassed more than 100 million streams across platforms and become a festival staple. He followed it up with the EPs Ved and Dev in 2018, further cementing his signature style of merging Hindustani classical motifs with contemporary electronic music. His 2021 collaborative EP Baaraat with Nucleya leaned into wedding-inspired anthems, while his 2022 album Mimmi—dedicated to his mother, Hindustani classical singer Anvita Bharti, who taught him music growing up—marked a more personal turn in his songwriting. Last year, he teamed up with Pakistani singer Hasan Raheem on “Mehrbaan,” a single that drew attention for its cross-border collaboration and eclectic mix of influences. With Kurta Saree, Ritviz is framing his music as part of a larger creative ecosystem. Aimed to serve as a “playful exploration of duality,” the album is positioned as a concept that stretches into fashion, live performance, and visual storytelling. “Through my new project, Kurta Saree, I want to build a world where tradition and the future aren’t a clash — they’re a celebration. It’s about taking something so traditional and making it feel so new,” Ritviz tells Rolling Stone India. “After years of being locked up in my bedroom producing, perfecting this new sound, I’m so excited to finally be releasing the first track ‘DHA’ on Sep. 19!” No track list has yet been revealed, but the rollout is expected to continue with additional singles dropping through the year ahead of the 2026 release. Lee Jun-ho Steers ‘Typhoon Family’ Through Korea’s Financial Crisis

Entertainment The actor adapts the role of a young man who leads his family’s struggling business through a phase of financial crisis in Korea Lee Jun-ho plays Kang Tae-poong in ‘Typhoon Family.’ Photo: Netflix, courtesy of Han Cinema. Lee Jun-ho of 2PM stars in Typhoon Family as Kang Tae-poong, a young man challenged to trade in his once carefree lifestyle for the weight of responsibility when he’s suddenly compelled to head Typhoon Company, his father’s struggling business. South Korea’s 1997 International Monetary Fund (IMF) crisis serves as the backdrop for this new slice-of-life period drama series, tracing the complexities of the time, with Tae-poong embodying the spirit of a generation grappling with the crisis. If anything, Tae-poong’s journey is one of transformation, from a footloose to a figurehead. But it’s not just him—it’s the people around him as well, like Oh Mi-seon, a bookkeeper at the Typhoon Company, played by Kim Min-ha. In a competitive culture, Mi-seon juggles the responsibilities of her family with her own ambitions. As she shares with Netflix in its press statement, “I’m honored to play Oh Mi-seon. Typhoon Family was created with heart—from the cast to every member of the production team.” Kim Min-ha and Lee Jun-ho in a still from ‘Typhoon Family.’ Photo: TVN, courtesy of Han Cinema. Typhoon Family is like a time capsule of a defining moment in South Korean history in its portrayal of events around the 1997 financial chaos, which brought significant changes in the country’s economic and social landscape, forcing Koreans to re-evaluate their values and priorities. It’s a story of resilience, framed by a nation in flux. Speaking of which, Lee Jun-ho says, “I hope this story brings laughter, comfort, and genuinely resonates with you.” Directed by Han Ji-seung and written by Park Jae-beom, the show fundamentally is about the power of human strength and connection in the face of adversity, highlighting the importance of community and support during difficult times. “I hope viewers not only watch but feel each moment—youth, hope, hardship, and triumph,” says Kim Min-ha. The drama will be available on Netflix on October 11, taking you back to the 1990s, with all its quirks and charms. “I hope you experience the 90s nostalgia and emotional journey with us,” adds Lee Jun-ho. Bruce Springsteen Explores Next Career Move in New ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’ Trailer

Entertainment The Scott Cooper-directed biopic arrives in theaters on Oct. 24 Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen in ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.’ 20TH CENTURY STUDIOS In a new trailer for the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere, Springsteen, played by Jeremy Allen White, is exploring his next career move. The Scott Cooper-directed biopic, which focuses on the musician’s search for a big hit and bold career pivot to acoustic folk music on his Nebraska album, arrives in theaters on Oct. 24. The new clip begins with Springsteen noting, “It’s a hard thing, realizing people aren’t who you want them to be.” The next scene shows him speaking with Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong) at a diner about his next career move, with Landau later opining to someone else, “I think Bruce is afraid of what’s coming, and he feels guilty leaving behind the world he knows.” The rest of the scene-setting trailer consists of a rapid-fire montage of Springsteen performing and interacting with the friends and lovers he meets along his musical journey. Toward the end of the clip, scored by Springsteen’s “Atlantic City,” Columbia Records executive Al Teller (David Krumholtz) tells Landau that pivoting to folk is a “highly unorthodox career move,” but Landau supports it. In the trailer’s final scene, Springsteen notes, “Don’t need to be perfect, I just want it to feel right.” Alongside White, Strong, and Krumholtz, Deliver Me From Nowhere also stars Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Gabby Hoffman, and Marc Maron. Cooper adapted the script from Warren Zane’s 2023 book of the same name.  “Making Springsteen was deeply moving as it allowed me to step inside the soul of an artist I’ve long admired — and to witness, up close, the vulnerability and strength behind his music,” Cooper said in a previous statement. The director added, “The experience felt like a journey through memory, myth, and truth. And more than anything, it was a privilege to translate that raw emotional honesty to the screen, and in doing so, it changed me. I cannot thank Bruce and Jon Landau enough for allowing me to tell their story.” From Rolling Stone US. Read More
