According to The New York Times, Redford died in his sleep at his home in the mountains outside Provo, Utah, on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 16. As of now, no cause of death has been given; Rogers & Cowan PMK chief executive Cindi Berger confirmed in a statement that he died peacefully in his sleep. Robert wasn’t just a man who acted; he was the leading man of the ’70s in every sense. He had the talent and the looks to elevate each other. He earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for The Sting (1973), won Best Director for Ordinary People (1980), and earned another Best Director nod for Quiz Show (1994). “I’ve spent most of my life just focused on the road ahead, not looking back,” Redford said in his 2002 honorary Oscar speech, and he continued with, “But now tonight, I’m seeing in the rearview mirror that there is something I’ve not thought about much, called history.” He was born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California. Redford trained at the American Academy of the Dramatic Arts; later on, he made his Broadway debut in Tall Story (1959). His early roles included TV shows like 8, Route 66, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, and The Untouchables. Robert’s career-defining moment was back in 1969, with the role of Sundance Kid in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring opposite Paul Newman. It was in 2018 that he announced he would retire from the industry with The Old Man & the Gun, starring alongside Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Tika Sumpter, and Tom Waits. “Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21,” he said at the time. A month later, in a conversation with PEOPLE, he shared that “I think it was a mistake to say that I was retiring because you never know. Entertainment The succession battle over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s vast Rs. 30,000 crores estate has entered a crucial stage, with Karisma Kapoor stepping in to fight for her children, Samaira (20) and Kiaan (15). Represented by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, the siblings have challenged an alleged will that surfaced seven weeks after their father’s demise, despite earlier assurances that no such will existed. Karisma Kapoor battles for her children’s rights in Sunjay Kapur’s Rs. 30,000 crores estate dispute At the heart of the dispute lies a March 2025 will that reportedly leaves all of Kapur’s personal assets to his third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur. The document, however, has neither been registered nor probated, and the children’s legal team allege suppression and forgery. The Delhi High Court has directed disclosure of the alleged will, along with a full account of Sunjay Kapur’s assets as on June 12, 2025. Jethmalani clarified that the case is not about monetary benefits from the RK family trust but about ensuring fair inheritance for the children. He stressed, “This litigation is about securing the future of Sunjay Kapur’s children and ensuring fair access to the assets held in India and abroad.” The courtroom also heard claims from Priya Sachdev Kapur’s counsel that the children had already received Rs. 1,900 crores through the RK family trust. Sources, however, reveal this figure reflects only the value of Sona Comstar shares still held within the trust, over which the children have no control. Actual access to these assets remains with Priya Sachdev Kapur. Jethmalani underlined the imbalance, noting that even if the Rs. 1,900 crores figure is accepted, over Rs. 28,000 crores remains under Priya’s control. “Would she forsake a good part of that fortune? One has to understand that this litigation is to ensure all five Class 1 heirs, including the two children of Karisma and Sunjay Kapur, receive fair access to his estate,” he argued. As of now, Karisma Kapoor’s children have not been provided a copy of the will, nor clarity on their father’s personal estate. The unfolding legal battle has sparked broader questions about transparency, fairness, and the rights of children in high-profile inheritance disputes. However, the studio revealed that it has recently encountered disturbing evidence of extortion attempts. According to NGE, certain individuals had allegedly demanded money and threatened to tarnish the reputation of films, directors, and lead actors if their demands were not met. The production house has now referred the matter to investigative authorities, calling for lawful action against those involved. The company also clarified that its actions are not aimed at genuine film critics, independent reviewers, or YouTubers who contribute to healthy cinematic discourse. “We value honest work and wholeheartedly welcome their contributions to the healthy progress of the film industry,” the statement read. The note concluded with NGE’s assurance that while constructive criticism will always be welcomed, malicious practices that threaten the integrity of cinema will be firmly dealt with under the law. Entertainment Filmmaker and television personality Karan Johar has approached the Delhi High Court, requesting protection of his personality rights to prevent unauthorized commercial use of his name and likeness. Johar’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate Rajshekhar Rao, argued that multiple websites and social media accounts have been exploiting his image and persona without consent, often using his photographs to sell merchandise or generate funds. Ashok Kumar/John Doe & Ors, comes shortly after similar victories by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, who both secured court orders protecting their names and images from exploitation. During the hearing on Monday, Rao stated that Johar’s photographs were being downloaded and circulated across various online platforms, with some social media pages even operating under his name. According to Rao, Johar has the right to decide how and where his persona is used commercially. He emphasized that the filmmaker’s decision not to act previously does not grant others blanket permission to exploit his identity. On behalf of Meta Platforms, which owns Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, Advocate Varun Pathak cautioned against a sweeping order. He argued that many of the flagged posts were ordinary comments or jokes made by fans, not defamatory or malicious content. A blanket injunction, Pathak noted, could open the door to excessive litigation, with everyday fan interactions being dragged into court. Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora observed that the court needed to carefully distinguish between disparagement, memes, fan content, and outright commercial exploitation. The judge clarified that not every fan page could be ordered to shut down or taken offline. Instead, the court asked Johar’s team to specifically identify the accounts or websites misusing his persona for profit. The court signalled that it may issue targeted take-down orders against such violators, while also allowing Johar to return to court or approach platforms like Meta in case of future breaches. The matter has been listed for further consideration on September 15. If granted, Johar’s petition would further strengthen the growing legal trend among Bollywood celebrities to protect their image rights against unauthorized use in the digital and merchandise marketplace.
