Is India’s Next Pop Culture Revolution Coming From Creators?

Entertainment Uniting voices from music, comedy, gaming and lifestyle, YouTube Fanfest 2025 showed how creators are shaping India’s cultural and entertainment landscape. The NSCI Dome roared as YouTube Fanfest 2025 unfolded into a living, breathing celebration of entertainment and fandom culture. For one night, India’s biggest creators weren’t just behind the screen but on stage, proving the event’s tagline true: the stage is yours. This year’s lineup featured the  who’s who of the creator economy, ranging from Sanju Rathod, Aaditya Kulshreshth, Payal Gaming, GamerFleet, Lisa Mishra and RJ Karishma, to name a few. Architects of a new kind of fame, they are pioneering both short-form virality and long-form storytelling. Together, they embodied India’s “orange economy,” a digital ecosystem rewriting the rules of entertainment. With 2.5 million active creators across cities and small towns, India has become one of the fastest-growing creator communities globally. And YouTube, with 460 million users in India, is its beating heart. For these stars, fan funding, virtual gifting, and brand partnerships were only part of the business. What mattered most was authenticity, the ability to connect with audiences, whether through a 30-second clip or a 30-minute set. Among the standout voices at this year’s Fanfest was Marathi pop sensation Sanju Rathod, known for hits like “Shaky” and “Gulabi Saadi.” During rehearsals, he previewed his upcoming track “Sundari,” confidently rating it “a solid 10/10.” For Rathod, music and content are inseparable in today’s creator economy. “When I’m conceptualizing a sound, it’s always a combined audio-visual effort—one cannot exist without the other. He noted how musicians, who were previously associated with just playback singing, are now on the center stage, amplifying their voice and identity via ever-changing social media platforms. YouTube Shorts, he added, had been key to reaching wider audiences: “It is heartwarming to see children and grandparents both enjoy my music.” His story mirrors that of a generation raised on YouTube—drawing early inspiration from Honey Singh, experimenting with mix-mastering, and learning production through trial and error. “Time shows its flaws, and one must learn from them as creators,” he reflected, crediting those lessons for his current success. On the comedy flipside was stand-up comedian, writer and actor Aaditya Kulshreshth—better known online as “Kullu” or “Writer OP.” Over the years, he has carved out a persona as the internet’s quirky younger cousin, narrating his offbeat adventures with a mix of warmth and mischief. For him, the formats may change, but the goal remains the same: to create a sense of belonging, mirroring the comfort of hanging out with friends. “Even with formats like Tanmay Reacts, there’s always an effort to provide happiness, even if it be through short-form content,” he said. In a media landscape often defined by the male and female gaze, Kullu has embraced what he calls the “friendly gaze,” drawing in audiences as varied as ghazal enthusiasts and cricket fans. A decade into his stand-up career, his comedy has grown alongside his community. “Our audiences are looking for glimmers of escapism, something that puts a smile on their face. If I could be that outlet, then I believe I’ve done my part,” he reflected. When it comes to the business of comedy, Kullu is quick to credit the tightly knit support system among comics. “As comics, we lend accessibility of resources to one another. I can reach out to my peers to discuss anything—from ticket sales for specials to monetization tips. Some of the finest people, who also happen to be fans of the craft, are well-versed in the business and our temperament.” His expectations extend to the larger creator ecosystem as well. “It’s great where it’s at right now. However, we as creators need to up our game. However much we deny it, we are opinion shapers, and that responsibility of delivering well-informed content lies with us. Knowing is power, and it’s pivotal in nurturing our dynamic with our audience.” Lisa Mishra, who first began uploading covers to YouTube back in 2007, approaches her journey with nuance. “I view being a creator and an artist through the same lens. The process of creating, be it scripting, acting out a bit—is your idea, your intellectual property, making you the artist,” she said, challenging the assumption that musicians spend all their time locked in studios. For her, experimenting with short-form visual content is as much about honing artistry as it is about reach. At the same time, Mishra acknowledged how identities can blur in the creator economy. “There’s a third descriptor, the elephant in the room that kind of separates being a creator or an artist: influencer,” she said. Her fans have grown alongside her, watching her evolve from singing onstage to  on-screen roles in Call Me Bae and Royals. “The audience today also has autonomy of buying into this intimate process. Having a fanbase necessarily does not end up with a by-product of fame. They get to choose their heroes.” She is quick to empathize with audiences’ short attention spans: “I have poor attention span myself. Making microcontent not only reduces your timelines as a creator, but improves your overall efficiency.” What once involved writing, composing, and mixing a single song has become a process of testing snippets, releasing shorter pieces, and offering audiences more access in real time. On technology, she remains pragmatic. “As long as we’re not using it to replace human behavior, we’re good. I personally use AI to simplify processes, break down administrative stuff or technical jobs, that I am not the expert at. It shouldn’t be doing the creation or creative thinking for you.” The gaming world at Fanfest was also represented by two of India’s most popular names: GamerFleet (Anshu Bisht) and Payal Dhare, better known as Payal Gaming. Dhare, one of the country’s top female gamers, thrived on versatility, be it through cosplaying characters from Arcane or creating beauty and lifestyle content. She credited her adaptable nature and team of editors for tailoring short-form videos with hooks and CTAs that worked seamlessly on YouTube Shorts. “Through

What The Music Industry Doesn’t Talk About Enough: Minimum Wage For Musicians

Entertainment If the music industry wants a future full of headliners, it must start by paying its opening acts today One of the music industry’s worst-kept secrets is that opening acts are rarely paid fairly. Across clubs, festivals, and even international tours, younger artists are expected to perform for little or nothing, with the promise of “exposure” dangled as compensation. It’s a global problem, but in India—where protections are virtually nonexistent—the practice is especially damaging. In 2024, The News Minute reported how independent bands and musicians across India continue to struggle in ticketed concert markets, often playing to half-empty venues despite the frenzy that surrounds global acts like Coldplay. That gap highlights a central truth: exposure does not automatically translate into career growth or financial security. For many opening acts, these unpaid or underpaid slots create more strain than opportunity. The pattern is consistent across India’s live music economy. Everyone else in the chain—the headliner, promoter, venue, sponsors, and crew—is compensated for their work. Opening acts are the exception. They rehearse, travel, and perform, but often walk away with very little or nothing. The assumption is that they are “lucky” to share a bill, when in reality, they are subsidizing the industry with unpaid labor. This imbalance mirrors wider trends in the Indian music ecosystem. Session musicians and backing vocalists—the invisible hands behind chart-topping songs—are still not receiving royalties or credit, even though their work drives commercial hits. Business Standard reported earlier this year that “many session musicians in India still fail to receive royalty and credit.” A June 2025 Radio & Music piece echoed the same concern, noting how unsung hitmakers behind Bollywood and Punjabi blockbusters remain unpaid. If even proven contributors to hits are being undervalued, it is little surprise that opening acts are expected to work for free. Meanwhile, the broader money flow is undeniable. The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) reported a 42% jump in collections in FY 2024–25, crossing ₹700 crore in performance royalties. Clearly, there is money in the system—the question is how it is distributed. The fact that opening acts still walk away unpaid shows just how skewed priorities are. Globally, the situation is a little better. In the U.K., the Musicians’ Union publishes recommended minimum rates—£189.55 for a single gig in a venue under 200 capacity, plus rehearsal pay—but grassroots musicians often report being offered far less. A London School of Economics study found jazz musicians across London and Paris were still regularly exploited through low pay and unstable contracts. Even in developed markets, opening acts remain the most precarious link in the chain. This is why the idea of a minimum wage for live performances is overdue. It doesn’t have to be extravagant nor uniform across continents, but there should be a baseline under which fees cannot fall. Whether it’s ₹10,000 for a club slot in India or £150 in a UK pub, a minimum wage would recognize that building a career takes time and precision—but musicians still need to pay rent along the way. There are workable ways to implement it. Promoters could allocate a small percentage of ticket sales to every act on the bill, not just the headliner. Sponsors could earmark a portion of budgets for supporting talent, reframing it as cultural investment. Venues could bundle minimum artist payments into bar sales, ensuring that even small nights don’t leave openers unpaid. Ticketing platforms like SkillBox, District, and BookMyShow could build minimum artist fees into their registration systems. None of these solutions are radical—they are adjustments that reflect professionalism. The counterarguments are familiar: margins are thin, tickets are underpriced, and audiences are still developing. But those arguments don’t justify unpaid work. If young artists cannot afford to sustain themselves, the pipeline of future headliners dries up. India’s indie and hip-hop waves of the past decade produced dozens of promising names, but many disappeared due to financial instability long before they reached their peak. Globally, the attrition rate is similar. When only the privileged can afford to work for free, diversity suffers and the industry’s future shrinks. Change will require more than goodwill. Artists need to feel empowered to demand fair compensation instead of accepting “exposure” as a default. Managers must set minimum expectations and refuse deals that undercut them. Promoters and festivals need to see compensation not as charity but as an investment in their own ecosystems. And industry bodies—from IPRS in India to unions abroad—must publish baseline guidelines, just as the U.K.’s Musicians’ Union does. Transparency alone would give young acts leverage in negotiations. Let’s be honest here, exposure doesn’t pay the bills. Until the music industry accepts this and institutes a minimum wage for performers, opening acts will remain the most undervalued workers in music. And with every artist priced out of their own career, the future of live music gets smaller. Read More

Cillian Murphy Doesn’t ‘Know Anything’ About Who Will Play Voldemort in ‘Harry Potter’ Series

Entertainment While the Irish actor wished “good luck to whoever is going to fill those shoes,” all he knows is that it won’t be him Cillian Murphy on Sept. 5, 2025 in Toronto, Ontario. Tommaso Boddi/Getty Images Cillian Murphy isn’t taking up the mantle as Voldemort in the Harry Potter series currently in development at HBO. During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor denied that rumors of him taking the role of the villain have any credibility. “I don’t know anything about that,” Murphy said, noting that his kids have shown him the rumors on occasion. “I mean, also, it’s just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend. So, good luck to whoever is going to fill those shoes.” The upcoming reboot television series will be directed by Mark Mylod with Francesca Gardiner as showrunner. So far, Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton have joined the cast in the respective roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermoine Granger. John Lithgow will play Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer joins as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Earlier this year, Lithgow defended his decision to take the role despite anti-trans rhetoric from author J.K. Rowling, who is an executive producer on the show. “Of course, it was a big decision because it’s probably the last major role I’ll play,” he said. “It’s an eight-year commitment so I was just thinking about mortality and that this is a very good winding-down role.” In May, HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys told The Town podcast, “The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us. We’ve been in business for 25 years … We already have a show on HBO from her called C.B. Strike that we do with the BBC. It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.” From Rolling Stone US. Read More

Everything We Know About Doja Cat’s Fifth Album, ‘Vie’

Entertainment The LP will be released on Sept. 26 Doja Cat at the MTV Video Music Awards 2025 held at UBS Arena on September 07, 2025 in New York, New York. Gilbert Flores/Billboard Doja Cat had barely left behind Scarlet before diving into her latest release. The Grammy winner made a more rap-focused project with her fourth LP, moving on from the lighter pop and R&B flavor of 2021’s Planet Her. The pivot paid off, becoming her third Top 10 album and garnering rave reviews from critics and longtime fans alike. But Doja Cat is not one to do the same thing twice. She’s got a brand new sound and look for Vie. Ahead of its September 26th release, here’s everything we know about the new album. She’s back to pop As listeners can hear on her lead single “Jealous Type,” Doja Cat is back to the pop sound that helped her break through. “I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project,” she told V in an interview this summer. “I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it’s popular. It starts to become a bit of a thing that’s viewed as a sport by people who are just bystanders to it, who enjoy it, but maybe also don’t respect it or what it is, which is just music. There are some people who don’t see it as music. They see it as if this is some kind of football for girls and gays.”  This news came as a surprise to her listeners: Back in 2023, she called her own pop music “mid & corny” and tweeted that she was done with the sound. “No more pop music,” she wrote at the time. The Eighties are a big influence on Vie Doja Cat is not an Eighties baby but she’s certainly pulling out some deep references to that decade in her rollout. The album’s campaign and editorial aesthetic has made references to everything from classic Grace Jones images to hair metal vixens. During her VMA performance, she transformed into Max Headroom, the computer-generated TV presenter. “I have so many things that float around in my brain when it comes to the Eighties” she told V. “I have no experience of the Eighties or any relation to it in that sense…I wanted to play with that nostalgia by using these Lo-Fi sounds and samples and things that reminded you of something from your childhood, but it wasn’t on the nose Eighties.” Jack Antonoff produced the album What better modern producer to call for an Eighties-inspired album than Jack Antonoff? Doja Cat linked up with him for Vie and sang his praises in a recent interview with Zane Lowe. “I’m working with Jack Antonoff and working with a person that’s new in my life,” she said. “And so it’s the grappling with talking about something personal and creating something fresh, and then getting to know someone new, and then all of these things fell together really naturally. He’s been such a wonderful person to work with. The album revolves around romance On the album cover, Doja Cat’s face is surrounded by roses. It’s a romantic image for a reason: Love in all forms inspired the lyrics on Vie. “The concept is very pointed towards love, romance, and sex — and discourse in relationships,” she told Vie. “I think right now, you hear a lot of songs about breakups, and a lot of songs about how we’re just kind of sick of men. I have a song like that on this album. But the thing is, there are so many ways to talk about that feeling — like, ugh, men. This album is very much about love in a way that reflects how I want it to be in the future — my hope, my hopefulness. What I hope it could be. Because I remember there was a time when people were talking about wanting to be with each other, and it seems to have gotten a bit more vapid and just sort of like, not real… not loving, not romantic.” The catchy, sexy lead single “Jealous Type” evokes Prince and his many female protégées like Apollonia or Vanity. On it, she sings and raps about her own jealousy and impatience with how a relationship is progressing. On Instagram Live as well as X posts, she further teased lyrics to songs like “Acts of Service” and “Lipstain” where she says she’s deleted Raya and that a partner has given her keys to their flat. Karisma Kapoor REJECTED Sunjay Kapur’s offer of Portuguese citizenship for THIS reason?

Entertainment Home News and Gossip Karisma Kapoor REJECTED Sunjay Kapur’s offer of Portuguese citizenship for THIS reason? Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025. A few months after his demise, the battle over inheritance of his massive estate has reached court. Karisma Kapoor is in the news because of the inheritance battle over ex-husband Sunjay Kapur’s vast empire. Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur’s kids – Samaira and Kiaan – have moved to court alleging that Priya Kapur (Sunjay Kapur’s third wife) forged his will to cut them out of the inheritance. As the court agreed to hear the case, a lot of details came to fore. It was also being reported that Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur were in contact with each other through WhatsApp and allegedly there were plans to seek Portugese citizenship for their kids. However, the latest reports suggest that Karisma Kapoor rejected the offer to be a Portuguese citizen. What does lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani has to say about Sunjay Kapur’s move for Portuguese citizenship? Now, Karisma Kapoor‘s kids’ lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani has shed some light on this new development of Portuguese citizenship. In a chat with Republic World, Mahesh Jethmalani revealed that Karisma Kapoor ultimately rejected the idea of of giving up Indian citizenship. Reportedly, Sunjay Kapur informed her that Indian government does not grant dual citizenship. He was quoted saying, “She was told that she would have to give up Indian citizenship if she took up Portuguese citizenship, and she refused.” He also added that Sunjay Kapur’s move for Portuguese citizenship for children casts suspicion on the will. Further, he explained that Sunjay Kapur could be considering Portuguese citizenship for his children in order to save them from inheritance tax. But the timing of it raises suspicion. Mahesh Jethmalani was quoted saying, “But certainly, he was toying with the idea of Portuguese citizenship for his two children for the reason that properties overseas would be exempted from inheritance tax and all 3 of his kids – one from Mrs Priya Kapur and two from Karisma Kapoor – all three of them would be saved from inheritance tax because Portugal doesn’t have an inheritance tax regime. So, if in May 2025, you are trying to create citizenship for your children to avoid inheritance tax on overseas property, it is a little surprising that you had already executed a will in March 2025, in which all the overseas properties are devolved to Mrs Priya Sachdev and none to the children, so that’s a suspicious circumstance.” Reportedly, Sunjay Kapur’s empire is worth Rs 30,000 crore. Allegedly, at a family meeting held on July 30, Priya Kapur presented the will of Sunjay Kapur that was executed in March 2025. Priya Kapur has now been asked to list all the movable and immovable assets of Sunjay Kapur, by court. Don’t Miss Out on the Latest Updates. Subscribe to Our Newsletter Today! Read More
