The New “Red Sonja” Reviews Are In

Samuel Goldwyn Films Reviews are in for the new “Red Sonja” and, while it’s hardly shocking that they’re not good, the film appears to have scored as well as it has means it’s not as bad as you may expect. Matilda Lutz stars in the film as barbarian huntress Red Sonja who must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against the evil tyrant Dragan (Robert Sheehan) and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia (Wallis Day). With 27 reviews counted, the film sits at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, while there aren’t enough reviews on Metacritic for a rating as yet. Though mixed overall, more than a few reviews seem pleasantly surprised by its old-school approach to the genre. Here’s a sampling of review quotes: “For a character who’s waited four decades to return to the big screen, this is a larger-than-life, bloody, and beautifully earnest reintroduction.” – Nicolás Delgadillo, Discussing Film “The film overcomes a promising but inconsistent start, building to a solid back half with strong combat and performances, anchored by a bold Matilda Lutz and an impressive Robert Sheehan.” – Jeff Ewing, Collider “Its devotion to the source material and commitment to delivering to the best of its ability makes it more engaging than much of the competition.” – Fred Topel, UPI “With a bigger budget and a tighter script, this could have been the birth of an exciting new franchise. Regardless, Matilda Lutz wears the chainmail with honor and enough devotion that we are all entertained for the majority of this latest revival.” – Aaron Peterson, The Hollywood Outsider “Red Sonja attempts to revive its franchise, but it fails to justify itself, tell a compelling story, or make us care about the characters.” – Mary Kassel, Screen Rant “Red Sonja is significantly flawed, but it’s also an unabashedly earnest adventure movie, something that’s been missing from our screens and deserves to return.” – Kyle Logan, ScreenAnarchy “In an era when fantasy blockbusters tend to be either relentlessly flip or lumberingly pretentious, it’s almost possible to feel affection for the straightforward B-grade badness of Red Sonja…” – Jake Wilson, Sydney Morning Herals “Someone somewhere must have done a punch-up on the script, because every now and then a reasonably witty quip arrives out of nowhere before the dialogue reverts to faux medieval speak.” – Leslie Felperin, The Guardian Samuel Goldwyn Films is releasing the movie in cinemas tonight only; after that, it will be hitting VOD platforms on August 29th. Gunn Sets Story For Next “Superman” Film

Warner Bros. Pictures The world premiere of the second season of “Peacemaker” is underway tonight in Los Angeles with the cast and DC Studios chief James Gunn walking the red carpet. At last report, Gunn was working on a treatment for a new film in which Superman would be a major character, but wasn’t going to be a direct “Superman” sequel or a “World’s Finest”-style deal. Now, during a video chat with THR, he confirms he’s already finished that treatment, which he describes as very detailed: “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman saga. The treatment’s done, which means a very, very worked out treatment. I’m working on that, and I’m hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.” He re-affirms that the upcoming “Peacemaker” season is quite crucial in the overall DCU saga: “We have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important. Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are going to show up that we’ve already met in Superman, and I don’t think there’s anything I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker.” Separately and earlier in the day, Gunn was also asked by EW about any further members of his “The Suicide Squad” film coming back for the DC Universe. In terms of Harley Quinn return, and whether he’ll get Margot Robbie back, he says: “That will be revealed down the line”. He does admit now that he’s “always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out” referring to Idris Elba’s mercenary character. The comments come as DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation have premiered the first installment of “Krypto Saves the Day!,” a four-part series of animated shorts with the first shot set to be available on the upcoming digital and physical releases of “Superman” which hits PVOD Friday and disc on September 23rd. New Bond Casting Talk Draws Confusion

BBC Two different reports about potential James Bond casting have emerged today and paint a very strange picture. On the one hand, The Hollywood Reporter has published a piece from a “well-placed source close to the production” claiming that 37-year-old red-haired Welsh actor Scott Rose-Marsh (“Wolves of War,” “The Outlaws”) may have already auditioned in some way. Specifically, they say the actor was “brought in sometime in late June to read sides from 1995’s GoldenEye, presumably for just-hired director Denis Villeneuve”. The source claims Rose-Marsh was given just one piece of direction before the test cameras rolled – “Don’t impersonate a previous Bond.” If accurate and he has tested, that would shoot down talk that Amazon was looking at a twenty-something Bond to lure in younger audiences. Amazon MGM Studios and Rose-Marsh’s reps did not return a request for comment by the trade. That wasn’t the only unexpected Bond casting talk today though. OK Magazine is claiming Amazon chief Jeff Bezos wants to launch his former journalist wife into a prominent acting role in the James Bond reboot, saying: “This isn’t just fantasy casting – Jeff wants her on screen, period.” Denis Villeneuve will direct the new film which is being written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight. Paramount Has “Top Gun 3,” “Trek,” WWZ Plans

Paramount Pictures With the Skydance-Paramount merger closed, the new studio leaders, Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, are getting down to business, and that means a major ramping up of the studio’s film slate. At a press event in Los Angeles this afternoon, Paramount’s new CEO David Ellison says the priority is to “restore Paramount as the No. 1 studio for filmmakers and talent in the world”. That includes “to strategically scale the amount of content for our streaming service as well as studios.” In recent years, the cash-hampered studio has pumped out around 11-14 films annually. Now cash-rich Skydance is on board, which will immediately be bumped to 15 with the aim of hitting 20 in the near future. Deadline reports that the plan is for the new Paramount to bet big on tentpoles. One priority is new “Star Trek” films with Goldberg saying “Star Trek is a priority across the company”. The plan will be to look at the franchise holistically – meaning a likely stronger integration between its film and TV elements with Goldberg adding: “We’re going to make sure those conversations are happening together so that we can do what’s best for the brand as a whole.” Another is “Top Gun” says Goldberg. Though a third film in that series has not been formally announced, Ehren Krueger has been working on a script for that since 2023. Also surprisingly name checked was “World War Z”. “Transformers” is also very much alive with three separate scripts in development, including one with Michael Bay attached – those scripts are expected to be reviewed by the top brass soon. “A Quiet Place Part III” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2” are still moving forward with their planned 2027 releases, and a live-action version of the Ninja Turtles story “The Last Ronin” is also still very much alive. The first two will join “Sonic the Hedgehog 4,” “The Angry Birds Movie 3” and “Children of Blood & Bone” all slated for 2027. The Olympics film “Winter Games,” the Ferris Bueller spin-off “Sam & Victor’s Day Off,” the comedy “What Kids Want,” the Matthew McConaughey-led adaptation of the Mike Hammer books, the Lee Isaac Chung-directed “The Traveler,” the Brandon Skelnar-led “The Rescue,” and an untitled David Corenswet film are all still moving foward as well. Universal Buys “Bourne” Rights In Perpetuity

Universal Pictures Jason Bourne has found a permanent home. NBCUniversal announced today that it has acquired all rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series. The acquisition reportedly grants them the rights in perpetuity – meaning any Bourne adaptation five, ten or fifty years from now will have to be done at Universal. The deal cements the franchise’s future across NBCUniversal and sets the framework for new instalments of the franchise with Frank Marshall lined up to produce them. WME began shopping the rights to the franchise and the rest of the Robert Ludlum library on behalf of the late author’s estate back in March after the rights exited the studio. Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer says in a statement: “Since its debut in 2002, the iconic Bourne franchise has reshaped the spy genre with groundbreaking films that set new standards for cinematic action. We’re energized to continue expanding the Bourne universe into the future with exciting new stories for global audiences.” Ludlum published “The Bourne Identity” in 1980 and two decades on, filmmaker Doug Liman teamed with Matt Damon for the film adaptation which launched the franchise. Taylor Swift Reveals New Album Cover, Tracklist, and Release Date on Travis Kelce’s Podcast: Watch

Taylor Swift has made a rare media appearance on New Heights, the podcast hosted by NFL players Travis and Jason Kelce. At 12:12 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday, April 12, she announced her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, in a clip from the episode. During its premiere tonight (Wednesday, August 13), she revealed the album’s cover art, release date, and tracklist, which includes a guest appearance from Sabrina Carpenter on the title track. Check those out and watch the episode below. “And, baby, that’s show business for you. New album The Life of a Showgirl. Out October 3,” Swift wrote on social media. Recorded during the Eras Tour, her 12th studio album will follow last year’s The Tortured Poets Department and its extended edition, The Anthology. Swift produced the record alongside Max Martin and Shellback, the Swedish songwriting team behind some of her biggest hits including “22,” “Blank Space,” and “I Knew You Were Trouble.” “The three of us have made some of my favorite songs that I’ve ever done before,” she told the Kelce brothers. “When I was on tour in Stockholm, I had Max Martin come out to the show,” Swift added, “and I was talking to him, and I was just like, ‘I feel like we could knock it out of the park if we went back in.’” She confirmed that The Life of a Showgirl features no producers other than Martin and Shellback, meaning that Jack Antonoff—who played a prominent role on every Swift album from 2019’s Lover through The Tortured Poets Department—and the National’s Aaron Dessner are not involved. “This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant,” Swift said on the podcast. “It just comes from like the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life. And so that effervescence has come through on this record.” She continued: “With Tortured Poets Department, I was like, ‘Here’s a data dump of everything I thought and felt in two or three years. Here’s 31 songs.’ This is 12. There’s not a 13th, there’s no other ones coming. This is the record I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time…Every single song is on this album for hundreds of reasons, you know, and you couldn’t take one out, and it’d be the same album. You couldn’t add one. It’s just right.” Asked by Jason Kelce to explain the album’s “theme,” Swift replied: “It’s everything that was going on behind the curtain.” She described her goals in making the record as “melodies that were so infectious that you’re almost angry at it, and lyrics that are just as vivid but crisp and focused and completely intentional.” On New Heights, Swift also discussed her courtship with Travis Kelce, her original vision for the Eras Tour, and buying back the master recordings for her first six albums. Four of those records—Fearless, Speak Now, Red, and 1989—had been given the “Taylor’s Version” treatment since 2021. Swift was nominated in six categories at the 2025 Grammy Awards, but didn’t take home any trophies. Gloria Gaynor, Kiss, and George Strait Get First Kennedy Center Honors Since Trump Takeover

President Donald J. Trump has announced the first Kennedy Center Honors recipients since he took over, earlier this year, as the chair of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. President Trump selected country musician George Strait, rock band Kiss, disco icon Gloria Gaynor, British actor Michael Crawford, and American film star Sylvester Stallone. The president has said that he plans to host the annual Kennedy Center Honors ceremony in December. Gaynor is best known for “I Will Survive,” the 1978 single that is considered an anthem of the gay rights movement. Her selection comes as the Trump administration enacts policies that have endangered transgender people and limited resources for LGBTQ people. When announcing Gaynor’s selection, Trump called “I Will Survive” an “unbelievable song.” Kiss is fronted by a longtime Trump supporter in Gene Simmons. The musician also appeared on Trump’s reality series, The Apprentice, in 2008. Still, as Rolling Stone notes, Simmons has criticized Trump at times, as has Kiss’ Paul Stanley. Sylvester Stallone, in contrast, has shown strong support for Donald Trump. Radiohead Release New Live Album Hail to the Thief (Live Recordings 2003-2009): Listen

Radiohead have surprise-released an album of live recordings drawn from their 2003 album, Hail to the Thief. Recorded between the year of its release and the end of the In Rainbows tours in 2009, the 12-track album is newly mixed and mastered by Ben Baptie and Matt Colton, respectively. Physical editions follow on October 31. Listen to Hail to the Thief (Live Recordings 2003-2009) below. In a statement explaining how the record came about, Yorke said, “In the process of thinking how to build arrangements for the Shakespeare Hamlet/Hail to the Thief theatre production I asked to hear some archive live recordings of the songs. I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played and it really helped me find a way forward. For us, back in the day, the finishing of this record was particularly messy and fraught, we were very proud of it but there was a taste left in our mouths, it was a dark time in so many ways. Anyway we decided to get these live recordings mixed (it would have been insane to keep them for ourselves) by Ben Baptie, who did an amazing job. It has all been a very cathartic process, we very much hope you enjoy them.” Though foundational for many fans, Hail to the Thief occupies a curious place in Radiohead lore, which generally holds that it is too long. Five years after its release, Thom Yorke posted a revised tracklist on Radiohead’s website omitting four songs—“A Punchup at a Wedding,” “We Suck Young Blood,” “I Will” and “Backdrifts”—and Nigel Godrich later said its lack of editing, while charming, made it “probably [his] least favourite of all the albums.” (All of them?!) In 2008, the band modestly reframed a handful of Hail to the Thief tracks on the live studio recording In Rainbows From the Basement. Before that, a searing live version of “2+2=5,” recorded at Earl’s Court, appeared on the 2004 EP Com Lag. As noted in his statement, Yorke recently adapted Hail to the Thief for a spin on Hamlet that opened in Manchester, England, in May. The new live album marks Radiohead’s first activity since forming a new business entity—a limited liability partnership (LLP)—this March, etching a faint question mark beside their dormant status. Today’s release does not necessarily answer the question that business entity raised: Radiohead typically form LLP entities for tours, not reissues, and, historically, the band has not toured without a new album to fine-tune or promote. Read Daniel Dylan Wray’s review of the aforementioned recent theater production, “Radiohead’s Hail to the Thief Brilliantly Recontextualized by New Staging of Hamlet.” All products featured on Pitchfork are independently selected by our editors.
