ChatGPT Lured Him Down a Philosophical Rabbit Hole. Then He Had to Find a Way Out

Entertainment A husband and father obsessed for weeks over a concept he was developing with the bot — and he found himself in an AI spiral Like almost anyone eventually unmoored by it, J. started using ChatGPT out of idle curiosity in cutting-edge AI tech. “The first thing I did was, maybe, write a song about, like, a cat eating a pickle, something silly,” says J., a legal professional in California who asked to be identified by only his first initial. But soon he started getting more ambitious. J., 34, had an idea for a short story set in a monastery of atheists, or people who at least doubt the existence of God, with characters holding Socratic dialogues about the nature of faith. He had read lots of advanced philosophy in college and beyond, and had long been interested in heady thinkers including Søren Kierkegaard, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Bertrand Russell, and Slavoj Žižek. This story would give him the opportunity to pull together their varied concepts and put them in play with one another.  It wasn’t just an academic experiment, however. J.’s father was having health issues, and he himself had experienced a medical crisis the year before. Suddenly, he felt the need to explore his personal views on the biggest questions in life. “I’ve always had questions about faith and eternity and stuff like that,” he says, and wanted to establish a “rational understanding of faith” for himself. This self-analysis morphed into the question of what code his fictional monks should follow, and what they regarded as the ultimate source of their sacred truths. J. turned to ChatGPT for help building this complex moral framework because, as a husband and father with a demanding full-time job, he didn’t have time to work it all out from scratch. “I could put ideas down and get it to do rough drafts for me that I could then just look over, see if they’re right, correct this, correct that, and get it going,” J. explains. “At first it felt very exploratory, sort of poetic. And cathartic. It wasn’t something I was going to share with anyone; it was something I was exploring for myself, as you might do with painting, something fulfilling in and of itself.” Except, J. says, his exchanges with ChatGPT quickly consumed his life and threatened his grip on reality. “Through the project, I abandoned any pretense to rationality,” he says. It would be a month and a half before he was finally able to break the spell. IF J.’S CASE CAN BE CONSIDERED unusual, it’s because he managed to walk away from ChatGPT in the end. Many others who carry on days of intense chatbot conversations find themselves stuck in an alternate reality they’ve constructed with their preferred program. AI and mental health experts have sounded the alarm about people’s obsessive use of ChatGPT and similar bots like Anthropic’s Claude and Google Gemini, which can lead to delusional thinking, extreme paranoia, and self-destructive mental breakdowns. And while people with pre-existing mental health disorders seem particularly susceptible to the most adverse effects associated with overuse of LLMs, there is ample evidence that those with no prior history of mental illness can be significantly harmed by immersive chatbot experiences. J. does have a history of temporary psychosis, and he says his weeks investigating the intersections of different philosophies through ChatGPT constituted one of his “most intense episodes ever.” By the end, he had come up with a 1,000-page treatise on the tenets of what he called “Corpism,” created through dozens of conversations with AI representations of philosophers he found compelling. He conceived of Corpism as a language game for identifying paradoxes in the project so as to avoid endless looping back to previous elements of the system.  “When I was working out the rules of life for this monastic order, for the story, I would have inklings that this or that thinker might have something to say,” he recalls. “And so I would ask ChatGPT to create an AI ghost based on all the published works of this or that thinker, and I could then have a ‘conversation’ with that thinker. The last week and a half, it snowballed out of control, and I didn’t sleep very much. I definitely didn’t sleep for the last four days.” The texts J. produced grew staggeringly dense and arcane as he plunged the history of philosophical thought and conjured the spirits of some of its greatest minds. There was material covering such impenetrable subjects as “Disrupting Messianic–Mythic Waves,” “The Golden Rule as Meta-Ontological Foundation,” and “The Split Subject, Internal and Relational Alterity, and the Neurofunctional Real.” As the weeks went on, J. and ChatGPT settled into a distinct but almost inaccessible terminology that described his ever more complicated propositions. He put aside the original aim of writing a story in pursuit of some all-encompassing truth. “Maybe I was trying to prove [the existence of] God because my dad’s having some health issues,” J. says. “But I couldn’t.” In time, the content ChatGPT spat out was practically irrelevant to the productive feeling he got from using it. “I would say, ‘Well, what about this? What about this?’ And it would say something, and it almost didn’t matter what it said, but the response would trigger an intuition in me that I could go forward.”       J. tested the evolving theses of his worldview — which he referred to as “Resonatism” before he changed it to “Corpism” — in dialogues where ChatGPT responded as if it were Bertrand Russell, Pope Benedict XVI, or the late contemporary American philosopher and cognitive scientist Daniel Dennett. The latter chatbot persona, critiquing one of J.’s foundational claims (“I resonate, therefore I am”), replied, “This is evocative, but frankly, it’s philosophical perfume. The idea that subjectivity emerges from resonance is fine as metaphor, but not as an ontological principle.” J. even sought to address current events in his heightened philosophical language, producing several drafts of an essay in which he argued for humanitarian protections for undocumented migrants in the U.S., including a

Drummergeddon 2025: Why We’re Witnessing a Global Percussion Apocalypse

Entertainment Bands are firing drummers, and trading drummers, and hiring back the drummer they just fired last week. It’s a full-blown crisis behind the kit impacting every level of music. How did it happen? Welcome to Drummergeddon 2025, when the entire music world wants to know: What the hell is going on with the drummers? There’s an epidemic of high-profile bands dumping their drummers, or getting dumped by them, and nobody has any clue why. It’s not just the Who or the Foo Fighters. It’s not just Nine Inch Nails or Pearl Jam or Primus. It’s not even just GNR or Oasis or Iron Maiden. It’s a host of rock and metal bands from different genres, at different levels of fame, shuffling their rhythm sections in a full-blown global percussion crisis. How did this happen? The Drummerpocalypse just keeps hitting new levels, reaching a farcical peak last week when the Foo Fighters and Nine Inch Nails traded drummers. The Who’s battle with ex-stickman Zak Starkey keeps raging on, after they fired, re-hired, then re-fired him this spring. Last weekend, Roger Daltrey went off in the Times, accusing Starkey of “character assassination.” Zak summed up the chaos back in May when he told Rolling Stone, “What the fuck? These guys are fuckin’ insane! I’ve been fired more times than Keith Moon in ten days.” But this year, we’re definitely seeing a vibe shift behind the kit. The Foo Fighters startled everyone in May by firing Josh Freese, one of the rock world’s most dependable (and most-employed) rhythm kings. They just announced his new replacement: Ilan Rubin, from Nine Inch Nails. This is weird because Freese used to play in Nine Inch Nails—and Rubin is the guy who replaced him when he left in 2008. Now Freese has rejoined his old mates, replacing his replacement, as if Rubin were just keeping his throne warm for the past sixteen years. There’s never been a scenario like this: two of the world’s biggest rock bands switching drummers like it’s a baseball trade. (Did Trent have to kick in some draft picks? Did Grohl need another left-hander for the post-season roster before the trading deadline?) There’s nothing comparable in history. The closest thing to a similar swap, according to Rolling Stone’s resident lore-master Andy Greene, came in 2003, after Metallica’s bassist Jason Newsted quit the band. They hired Robert Trujillo away from Ozzy’s band—so Ozzy replaced him with Newsted. But this is far crazier, given the drummers’ linked history. The Freese drama is a shocker because he’s the definition of a sure thing. He’s played with everybody. I’ve seen him live with Weezer, Devo, Paramore, the Replacements, probably others. But there’s also GNR (he replaced Matt Sorum), A Perfect Circle, Sublime With Rome, Lana Del Rey, Sting, Kelly Clarkson, Ween, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, Ricky Martin, even the Buffy musical episode. He joined the Foos in May 2023, stepping in for the late Taylor Hawkins. So everyone was stunned when he got the axe — especially Freese, who said, “In my forty years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band.”  But these are strange days for drummers. This week, Freese hits the road with Nine Inch Nails, while Rubin gets cozy with the Foos. This situation is basically one staircase crash away from Showgirls. Meanwhile, the Zak Starkey melodrama has turned into the messiest Who soap opera since Lifehouse. As Ringo Starr’s son, Zak grew up around Keith Moon and got drum lessons from him, then played with several million bands before spending nearly 30 years in the Who. He held the job longer than Moon ever did. But in April, they fired him for allegedly playing too loud (in the Who?), after Daltrey missed a cue in “The Song Is Over” at the Royal Albert Hall. They rehired him two weeks later (“News Flash! Who Back Zak!” Pete Townshend posted), but then Cousin Kevined him out of the band again two weeks later. It’s blown up into the most notorious controversy over a dumped drummer since Zak’s dad took over from Pete Best. If there was a tipping point for Drummergeddon, it might have been the weird moment back in 2024 when three of the world’s top metal bands — Sepultura, Slipknot, and Suicidal Tendencies — rotated their tubthumpers. Jay Weinberg got kicked out of Slipknot, but signed on with S.T., whose Greyson Nekrutman quit to join Sepultura, after Eloy Casagrande left to play for Slipknot. Fans were puzzled, but as Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser mused, “Maybe it was better for everyone.” Suicidal Tendencies, of course, used to have Trujillo on bass, for The Art of Rebellion. And who played drums on that album? Josh Freese.  To add extra levels of irony, Jay Weinberg’s dad keeps time for a guy named Bruce Springsteen. At 74, Max Weinberg hasn’t lost a drop of his superman stamina, but not even Bruce knows his secret. “Max is a human marvel,” he told Rolling Stone this summer. “So the guy comes out and plays basically for three hours straight without stopping. He stops, maybe there’s 30 seconds where he gets to take a sip of water twice, two or three times during the night.” Look, drummers have it tough. We take them for granted. They work so hard for us, and get so little respect. They suffer so much physical and emotional torment, forever the butt of jokes. What’s the difference between a drummer and a large pizza? What do you call a pretty girl on the arm of a drummer? What do you call a drummer wearing a tie? They’re the musicians that bands replace most ruthlessly, the ones producers shuffle in and out at will, ever since the Beatles ditched Pete for Ringo. Or for that matter, ever since George Martin replaced Ringo with a session guy for “Love Me Do” and demoted Zak’s dad to tambourine. (BTW, a large pizza will feed a family of four, a tattoo, and the defendant.) The drummers take the most punishment physically—as with baseball catchers, there’s a ceiling on how many innings the muscles can take. When Primus drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander quit last November, he didn’t mince words. “Being a drummer for almost four decades

Shanoo Sharma breaks silence on Ranveer Singh exiting from YRF; says, “There is no bad blood”

Entertainment Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) casting director Shanoo Sharma has opened up about Ranveer Singh parting ways with the production house that gave him his big break. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sharma addressed the actor’s exit candidly, revealing that there was no bitterness involved. Shanoo Sharma breaks silence on Ranveer Singh exiting from YRF; says, “There is no bad blood” “No, I don’t think it hurt. No, no, it didn’t hurt. Not at all. He’s going ahead with his life. I wish him all the best. There’s a reason why he must be going. There’s a reason why the production house is okay with him going. So I feel things work, and then they fade, and then they start to work again and then they fade. So it’s just literally that. I don’t think there’s any bad blood as such, but he needed to move, and for me, he’s my best friend as well. So there’s no no there’s nothing difficult on that front,” Sharma said. The journey of Ranveer Singh with YRF began in 2010 when he made his debut in the rom-com Band Baaja Baarat. The film, produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Maneesh Sharma, became a sleeper hit and established Singh as one of Bollywood’s most promising newcomers. Over the years, he collaborated with the banner on several successful films, including Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Gunday, Befikre, among others. Despite his departure from the YRF talent management fold, Singh has consistently expressed gratitude towards Chopra and the team for shaping his early career. His split from the production house marks the end of an era, but both parties appear to have moved forward amicably. Currently, Ranveer Singh is gearing up for Dhurandhar, a high-profile project featuring Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, directed by Aditya Dhar. The film is slated for release on December 5 and is already generating buzz for its powerhouse ensemble. In addition, Singh has Don 3 in the pipeline, stepping into the shoes of the iconic character previously portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Sharma’s comments reaffirm that in the ever-changing landscape of Bollywood, professional relationships evolve, and departures don’t necessarily signal discord. For her, Singh remains both a friend and a talent she deeply respects, while the actor continues to carve out a new chapter in his career beyond the YRF umbrella. EXCLUSIVE: Delayed Bengali film Dhumketu gives tough fight to War 2 in West Bengal; sells a whopping 18,000 tickets

Entertainment The industry is gearing up for the clash between the Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer War 2 and the Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie. As it happens during clashes, issues have come up with regard to show sharing. However, in the state of West Bengal, Bengali film Dhumketu has come out of the syllabus and has given a tough fight to both the films. EXCLUSIVE: Delayed Bengali film Dhumketu gives tough fight to War 2 in West Bengal; sells a whopping 18,000 tickets A trade source told Bollywood Hungama, “Dhumketu also releases on the same day as War 2 and Coolie, that is, Thursday, August 14. It was known that there was tremendous excitement to see the film. Yet, its makers are surprised by the advance ticket sales. Several shows across the state, particularly in Kolkata, are fast-filling or nearly sold out.” The trade source added, “Dhumketu has sold nearly 18,000 tickets as of Monday, August 11, 9:00 am and the number is increasing with each passing hour. Meanwhile, War 2 has sold around 5,000 tickets in West Bengal.” War 2 is distributed and produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF) and they have asked cinemas across the Hindi-speaking belt for maximum showcasing or 100% showcasing in single-screen, two-screen and three-screen properties. The trade source continued, “But YRF seems to have made an exception in West Bengal, looking at the response to Dhumketu’s advance booking and allowed some theatres for show-sharing. YRF head honcho Aditya Chopra always takes a pragmatic approach and he understands the hype for the Bengali film along with that for War 2. Hence, the exception was made.” In single-screens of Kolkata like Prachi, Asoka and Menoka, War 2 has been allotted 3 shows while Dhumketu has been allotted 1 show. In Jayanti and Binodini, Dhumketu has been given two shows. In Navina and Uma Talkies, two shows, however, have been allotted to both Dhumketu and Coolie’s Hindi version. As for the iconic Priya cinema, the management, from August 14, will play 3 shows of War 2, 1 show of Dhumketu and the morning show has been allotted to the animated blockbuster Mahavatar Narsimha. Surprisingly, both shows of Dhumketu in Navina and the afternoon show at Binodini are already sold out, though the release is three days away. Dhumketu stars popular Bengali actor Dev along with Subhashree Ganguly, Parambrata Chatterjee, Chiranjeet Chakraborty and others. Readers will be surprised to know that the shooting of the film began nearly ten years ago, in October 2015 and was completed in January 2017. The film then faced certain issues, after which it was finally revived earlier this year. A Bengali film industry insider commented, “Usually, delayed films look dated and their appeal diminishes over time. But with Dhumketu, that hasn’t happened at all. The audience is well aware that its filming was completed 9-10 years ago, but still, they can’t wait to see it. This is truly historic.” Also Read: EXCLUSIVE: No splitting of shows in single screens, 2-screen cinemas to play 12 shows, 10-screen multiplexes to play 54 shows – YRF’s release strategy for Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer War 2 REVEALED More Pages: War 2 Box Office Collection BOLLYWOOD NEWS – LIVE UPDATES Catch us for latest Bollywood News, New Bollywood Movies update, Box office collection, New Movies Release , Bollywood News Hindi, Entertainment News, Bollywood Live News Today & Upcoming Movies 2025 and stay updated with latest hindi movies only on Bollywood Hungama. Entertainment Home News and Gossip Chiranjeevi REFUTES claims of meeting protesting Tollywood workers over wage hike, calls them ‘basel… For the uninitiated, all Telugu film shoots were halted when the Telugu Film Employees Federation declared a strike in response to a long-running dispute about outstanding salary modifications. Megastar Chiranjeevi challenged allegations that he spoke with the protesting workers and assured them that their requests will be respected during the Telugu film industry’s total shutdown. He stated that all parties involved, not just one, will decide whether or not to comply with the requests. For those who are unaware, all Telugu film shoots were halted when the Telugu Film Employees Federation declared a strike in response to a long-running dispute about outstanding salary modifications. The workers’ union wanted a 30% increase in Tollywood workers’ daily earnings, claiming that salary modifications had not been made in three years.
