Bengal: CBI names TMC MLA, 2 civic councilors in 2021 post-poll murder case

Published on: Jul 02, 2025 07:10 pm IST CBI has filed second supplementary chargesheet in BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar’s murder case against 18 additional accused persons Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named a legislator and two civic councillors of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the agency’s second supplementary chargesheet in the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker during post-poll clashes in 2021. Also named in CBI’s supplementary chargesheet are three police personnel, including a lady police personnel. (Representational image) This is the first time the agency has named TMC leaders in the case. A senior CBI official said that Paresh Paul, TMC MLA from Beleghata in Kolkata, Swapan Samaddar, councillor of ward number 56 and Papiya Ghosh, councillor of ward 30 in Kolkata were named in the supplementary chargesheet. “CBI has filed second supplementary chargesheet in Abhijit Sarkar’s murder case against 18 additional accused persons, including one MLA and two councillors before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Sealdah on June 30,” the agency said in a statement on Wednesday. Also named in the supplementary chargesheet are three police personnel, including a lady police personnel, who were posted in Narkeldanga police station in May 2021 when the BJP worker was murdered allegedly by TMC workers. Hours after the results of the 2021 assembly election were announced on May 2, 2021 and the ruling-TMC returned to power in the state for the third time in a row, Sarkar was murdered allegedly by some TMC workers in Kolkata’s Narkeldanga area. “A mob tied a television wire around my brother’s neck and dragged him along the road. They smashed his head with a stone,” said Biswasjit Sarkar, brother of the deceased. “This chargesheet is nothing but a political leaflet. It has been filed under pressure from the BJP as the assembly elections are coming. A chargesheet is not the ultimate truth. This won’t stand in the court,” Kunal Ghosh, TMC leader told the media. Last week, CBI arrested Arun Dey, alias Bhai (brother), one of the prime accused in the case, after a search of four years. The Kolkata Police’s detective department, which was initially probing into the murder case, had filed its chargesheet on August 6, 2021. They had named 15 persons. The names of Paul, Samaddar and Ghosh were not there in the police chargesheet. Later, on August 19, 2021 the Calcutta high court ordered CBI to probe into the case. The federal agency took over the case and filed a first information report (FIR) on August 25, 2021. CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet on September 30, 2021 and named 20 persons, including the 15 persons named in the chargesheet filed by the Kolkata Police. “I don’t know anything about this. So, I won’t comment,” Paul said. “This was waiting to happen. There were allegations that these leaders had incited TMC workers through their speeches,” said Samik Bhattacharya, BJP Rajya Sabha member and spokesperson. Read More

5 Socially Charged Tamil Films To Watch If You Liked ‘Dhadak 2’

Entertainment With ‘Dhadak 2’, a remake of Tamil film ‘Pariyerum Perumal,’ bringing caste realities to a wider audience, here are five other Tamil films that tackle social inequality with unflinching honesty. Artwork by Sharanyaa Nair There’s a reason Dhadak 2, the Shazia Iqbal directorial starring Sidhhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, is making waves across the box office and social media. Emotionally gripping and politically resonant, the film explores the excruciating and often unspoken reality of inter-caste love. Even as it draws flak for its use of “Brownface”, it has cracked open conversations on a social reality that often gets swept under the rug. Part of a growing wave of mainstream cinema that uses the subtlety, nuance, and realism of its Indie counterparts, it’s a film that explores the complex and often sensitive aspects of romance between upper and lower caste individuals. The spiritual sequel of its romantic predecessor, Dhadak, this Dharma Productions film is a remake of the Tamil movie Pariyerum Perumal (2018), a critically acclaimed film by Mari Selvaraj. While Dhadak 2 is more focused on the socio-political undertones of such relationships, its predecessor was more of a dream sequence. Electrifying, gruesome, and immensely tragic, Pariyerum Perumal did not shy away from exposing the deep-rooted problems of caste discrimination, violence, and oppression that remain entrenched in our society to this day. Contemporary Tamil Cinema has long been at the forefront of taking on taboo topics through a cinematic lens. From Super Deluxe (2019) to Karnan (2021), the range is ever-evolving. Whether tackling LGBTQIA+ themes, rural issues, police brutality, or gender-based violence, the modern wave of Tamil filmmakers and storytellers is reclaiming the screen to spotlight pervasive social issues. If you liked Dhadak 2, here are a few others you could check out. 1) Bommai Nayagi (2023) Director Shan marks his cinematic debut with this musical drama, hailed for its sensitive yet sound depiction of caste-based sexual oppression in India. The plot revolves around Velu (Yogi Babu), a happy-go-lucky tea stall owner, and his 9-year-old daughter, Bommai Nayagi, who’s named after a local deity. His life comes crashing down when his child is brutally sexually abused by influential upper-caste men during a village festival. What follows is Velu’s obstacle-ridden path to justice, confronting the systemic barriers stacked against him. Such films help raise awareness about the harsh reality of rural caste-based sexual assault, which disproportionately affects women and children. 2) Kattumaram (2019) Tamil cinema has long been vocal about its exploration of queer undertones in the Indian context. Kattumaram follows suit. It traces the journey of Singaram (Mysskin), an old, conservative village fisherman who is trying to get his beloved niece, Anandhi, a schoolteacher, to settle down. While he wants her to be with the perfect groom, he’s unaware of her growing lesbian relationship with another teacher, which is already serving as fodder for gossip in the community. The film explores the patriarch’s dilemma—should he side with love or uphold societal norms? Director Swarnavel Eswaran decision to set the film against the traumatic backdrop of a tsunami disaster adds a layer of urgency and grief to an already complex narrative.  3) Merku Thodarchi Malai (2018) This picturesque Lenin Bharathi film encapsulates life along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border of the Western Ghats. Anchored by long, meditative shots and an Ilaiyaaraja-backed score, the movie centers around Rangaswamy, aka Rangu, a laborer working on the spice plantations. Juxtaposing the picturesque frames of the terrain with the laborers’ grueling daily routine, the film humanizes their struggle. Through Rangaswamy’s persistent desire to own land, the film offers a lens into the institutional hurdles faced by those pushed to society’s margins. Switching between musical interludes and narrative scenes, the film follows Rangu as he navigates corrupt politicians and murky land politics to secure a piece of his dream. While the background score sonically transports you to the mountains, the film visually emphasizes the unsung socio-political hardships of laborers like Rangu. 4) Aramm (2017) Thirst is the central character of this film. In a village grappling with water shortage and poor sanitation, a four-year-old girl accidentally falls into a neglected borewell. District collector Madhivadhani (played by Nayanthara) leads a tense rescue operation to get to the bottom of the incident. Using the water crisis as a backdrop, director Gopi Nainar highlights the glaring issues surrounding infrastructure and government apathy on a grassroots level. 5) Aruvi (2016) A poignant commentary on consumerism and misogyny, Aruvi follows the story of its titular character (played by Aditi Balan), who, despite being raised in a loving home, is presently being questioned by the cops for being part of a terrorist organization. Director Arun Prabhu Purushotham uses an inherently flawed character to talk about societal injustices and hierarchical issues from the female gaze. Her intense monologues help create a causal relationship between her words and actions, consistently defying societal expectations every step of the way. Read More

Six New and Addictive Korean Reality Shows to Binge Now

Entertainment From the steamy drama of ‘Single’s Inferno’ to the oddball laughs of ‘Kian’s Bizarre B&B’ to the delicious authenticity of ‘Jinny’s Kitchen’, these new and noteworthy Korean reality TV shows are redefining the genre From left to right: Kwak Dong-yeon, Lee Dong-hwi, Cha Eun-woo, and Lee Je-hoon for ‘Rented in Finland.’ Photo: TVN, courtesy of Viki. Korean reality shows are just as chaotic, charming, and addictive as the music, drama, and cinema. These shows are high on entertainment, creativity, and production standards, featuring a range of formats—from survival challenges to culinary battles, romance rivalries, and quirky travel adventures. Whether you’re just surfacing from a Love Island binge or are still emotionally tangled in Queer Eye, these six Korean reality shows bring a whole new flavor to the genre. Single’s Inferno (2021 – Present) Relationship drama is already reality TV’s kryptonite, but Single’s Inferno takes it one step further. Singles from all walks of life are dropped onto an island stripped of all luxuries, aptly named “Inferno”. They take on challenges like obstacle courses and tug-of-war contests, designed to test both physical strength and compatibility, all for a chance to spend a night on Paradise—a second island filled with creature comforts. The show packs the heat of a survival show with the slow burn of romance, all under the watchful eyes of celebrity hosts like Hong Jin-kyung, Lee Da-hee, and Kyuhyun (of Super Junior), whose witty, often cutting commentary amps up the show’s candid confessions and steamy tension. Now four seasons in, Single’s Inferno has consistently broken into Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English Series list. And with Season 5 on the horizon (expected to release later this year), the producers promise “new excitement and romance.” Jinny’s Kitchen (2023) In the streets of Mexico’s Bacalar and Iceland’s Reykjavík, Korean A-listers Lee Seo-jin, Park Seo-joon, Choi Woo-shik, Jung Yu-mi, BTS’s V (in season 1), and Go Min-si (in season 2) trade red carpets for chef hats and aprons in Jinny’s Kitchen. If you have a thing for food reality shows, then the show is a must-watch. It’s a spin-off of Youn’s Kitchen, where Lee Seo-jin graduates from manager to restaurant owner, serving up steaming hot Korean street food to the locals. As the cast navigates the ups and downs of running the eatery, they prepare signature dishes like tteokbokki, kimbap, and bibimbap, all while juggling job roles in the kitchen. With each season bringing a new country and culinary challenges, Jinny’s Kitchen becomes a delectable exploration of human connection, as these beloved actors work tirelessly to satisfy their customers’ appetites. It’s also further proof that good food can bridge even the most unfamiliar of cultures. Physical 100 (2023 – Present) In a setup reminiscent of Squid Game (minus the fatal consequences), 100 physically fit contestants go head to head in a battle of physical and mental endurance that pushes them to the breaking point. The participants are eliminated one by one, leaving only the last one standing to claim the grand prize. This exciting series strips away all facades, laying bare the raw nature of its contestants. The series became the trailblazing Korean reality TV show to become Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV Non-English series, and its second season further solidified its global appeal, ranking in the Top 10 in an impressive 87 countries. A third season is planned for release between September and December this year. Culinary Class Wars (2024 – present) Inside the high-stakes kitchen of Culinary Class Wars, 100 culinary masters face off in an all-time battle for kitchen supremacy. Contestants are divided into two rival camps: the seasoned veterans, dubbed the “white spoons,” and the hungry newcomers, called the “black spoons.” It’s a gruelling showdown of taste, technique, creativity, and flair, judged by two of Korea’s most accomplished chefs: Paik Jong-won and Ahn Sung-jae. With a second season already in the works and slated for a release this year, the heat is on to see who will win the war this time. Rented in Finland (2024 – 2025) In Finland’s picturesque Lapland, popular Korean actors—Lee Je-hoon, Lee Dong-hwi, Kwak Dong-yeon, and Cha Eun-woo—embark on a journey of discovery, leaving their luxurious lives far behind. They trade in their creature comforts to spend two nights each in remote cottages, immersing themselves in the Finnish way of life, and seeking out the secrets to the country’s happiness. They must tap into a simpler existence, learning survival strategies like campfire cooking and natural water sourcing. In the process, they connect with locals and soak up the culture. What unfolds is a true test of survival fueled by laughter, warmth, and insights, and a beautiful show that highlights the joy of human connections in a faraway, unknown land. Kian’s Bizarre B&B (2025) Kian’s B&B is a one-of-a-kind stay, tucked away on Ulleungdo Island, where all things weird and wonderful come together in a quirky reality game show setup. The brainchild of Kian84, the show features special co-hosts Jin from BTS and Ji Ye-eun, as they welcome guests to their secret island getaway. Surrounded by the open sea, the show is filled with hilarious mishaps and crazy challenges. Its awkward charm and often cringe-worthy moments make it uncomfortably endearing in the best way. According to Netflix, the show “ranked sixth globally in the non-English TV series category on Netflix’s TOP 10 list, introducing the charm of Korean-style B&B reality shows to audiences worldwide.” Read More

Watch David Gilmour Play Pink Floyd Classics in New Concert Film Trailer

Entertainment ‘David Gilmour Live at the Circus Maximus Rome’ hits theaters Sept. 17 David Gilmour’s 2024 tour is immortalized in a new concert film Griffin Lotz for Rolling Stone David Gilmour initially resisted playing Pink Floyd classics on his 2024 solo tour — but as seen in the just-released trailer to his new concert film, David Gilmour Live at the Circus Maximus Rome, he quickly changed his mind. “One has to wake up to reality once in a while,” he told Rolling Stone in 2024. “I think I will be doing one or two things from that time, but it just seems so long ago. I know people love them, and I love playing them. I’ll be doing ‘Wish You Were Here,’ of course, I will. And some of the things that started with me anyway.” Tickets are on sale now for the film, which hits theaters for a limited run Sept. 17. For its home video and audio release Oct. 17, the film will be accompanied by another documentary, the Luck and Strange Concerts, which draws footage from other dates on the tour. Circus Maximus documents a run of shows in Italy from the beginning of his brief tour behind his Luck and Strange album. Gilmour heavily spotlights the new album, but also pulls out Floyd songs from multiple eras of the band. As he prepared to release Luck and Strange, Gilmour cited it as his favorite album since Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. “It’s a flip statement, really,” he told Rolling Stone at the time. “I mean, it’s not like Dark Side the Moon is even my favorite album. I think I prefer Wish You Were Here. Anyway, it feels to me like it’s the best thing I’ve done in more or less my living memory, because some of those things feel like they were someone else, back in those eons ago. I was in my 30s when Roger Waters left our little pop group, and I’m 78.” Live at Circus Maximus track listing:1 5 A.M.2 Black Cat3 Luck and Strange4 Breathe (In The Air)5 Time6 Fat Old Sun7 Marooned8 Wish You Were Here9 Vita Brevis10 Between Two Points – with Romany Gilmour11 High Hopes12 Sorrow13 The Piper’s Call14 A Great Day For Freedom15 In Any Tongue16 The Great Gig In The Sky17 A Boat Lies Waiting18 Coming Back To Life19 Dark and Velvet Nights20 Sings21 Scattered22 Comfortably Numb (Encore) From Rolling Stone US. How ‘Clanker’ Became the Internet’s New Favorite Slur

Entertainment New derogatory phrases are popping up online, thanks to a cultural pushback against AI Clanker. Wireback. Cogsucker. People are feeling the inescapable inevitability of AI developments, the encroaching of the digital into everything from entertainment to work. And their answer? Slurs.  AI is everywhere — on Google summarizing search results and siphoning web traffic from digital publishers, on social media platforms like Instagram, X, and Facebook, adding misleading context to viral posts, or even powering Nazi chatbots. Generative AI and large language models (LLM) — AI trained on huge datasets — are being used as therapists, consulted for medical advice, fueling spiritual psychosis, directing self-driving cars, and churning out everything from college essays to cover letters to breakup messages.  Alongside this deluge is a growing sense of discontent from people fearful of artificial intelligence stealing their jobs, and worried what effect it may have on future generations — losing important skills like media literacy, problem solving, and cognitive function. This is the world where the popularity of AI and robot slurs has skyrocketed, being thrown at everything from ChatGPT servers to delivery drones to automated customer service representatives. Rolling Stone spoke with two language experts who say the rise in robot and AI slurs does come from a kind of cultural pushback against AI development, but what’s most interesting about the trend is that it uses one of the only tools AI can’t create: slang.  “Slang is moving so fast now that an LLM trained on everything that happened before it is not going to have immediate access to how people are using a particular word now,” says Nicole Holliday, associate professor of linguistics at UC Berkeley. “Humans [on] Urban Dictionary are always going to win.”  Clanker, the most popular of the current AI slurs, was first used in the 2005 Star Wars first-person shooter video game Republic Commando, according to Know Your Meme. But it was introduced to most audiences in a 2008 episode of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars as a retort from a Jedi fighting a horde of battle droids. “OK, clankers,” the Jedi said. “Eat lasers.” According to Adam Aleksic, the creator of the TikTok page Etymology Nerd and author of the 2025 book Algospeak, the meme first gained popularity on the r/Prequelmemes subreddit, a Star Wars fan community. Star Wars isn’t the only science-fiction offering that had its characters say derogatory things to their robot counterparts. In Battlestar Galactica, people referred to the sentient robots, Cylons, as “toasters” or “chrome jobs.” Both Aleksic and Holliday note that the way slurs work — in these stories and in real life — is by carrying an assumed power structure along with them.  “Slurs are othering. Usually, the things that we end up considering to be slurs or epithets are from a majority group with power against a minority group,” says Holliday. “So when people use these terms, they’re in some ways doing so as a self-protective measure, and we tolerate that more because humans are [perceived as] the minority group. And punching up is always more socially acceptable than punching down.”  But there’s also a problem with using slurs as a way to fight back against AI encroachment, these experts say, as the words can actually reinforce the belief that AI is becoming more human. “It’s drawing on historical ways that slurs have dehumanized others,” Aleksic tells Rolling Stone. “Something requires a degree of anthropomorphization, of personification, for a slur to work.”  The easiest place to see the humanization and dehumanization of slurs is in POV videos that imagine situations where robot slurs like clanker, wireback, and tin-skinned aren’t used to cheekily fight back against chatbots, but against AI individuals that have some kind of place in a fictional future society — a Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner for the robot age. Many creators post skits where the robot slurs are spoken while a robot is applying for a job, or meeting their human partner’s parents for a holiday.  As robot slurs continue to have their viral moment, there’s been a rise in concerned internet users who feel like the trend is just a convoluted way for people to get close to saying real-life slurs. They’re not wrong — it’s how they got started on the Star Wars subreddit. “The way clanker was used was a clear analogy to the n-word,” Aleksic says. “There’d be a photo of a droid giving you the c-word pass or one captioned ‘What’s up my Clanka?’ with an ‘a.’” Aleksic thinks many of the robot slurs are popular because they inspire such mixed reactions. Algorithms reward strong feelings, and clanker content has the added benefit of grabbing people who don’t like AI, people who want to be edgy online, and people who are afraid of being the “woke” friend all at the same time. Unfortunately, even if the robot-slur trend died tomorrow, whatever took its place would most likely be equally rooted in shocking and controversial language.  While it’s hard to tell how much longevity these slurs will have, or how much of the trend’s popularity comes from anti-AI sentiment or the algorithmic appeal of buzzwords, the linguists who spoke to Rolling Stone say this fits into the natural way human language evolves. People adapt words because of how using them makes them feel — and words change based on the context of other words being used around them. “In the case of clanker, it’s seen as funny or cool to be counter-cultural to AI. African American English spread into the mainstream because it was perceived as cool from the outside. It was sociologically prestigious,” Aleksic says. “But if you look at how algorithms change these words, it’s kind of an exaggerated picture of what humans are doing with this medium.”  Though AI platforms have begun to recognize clanker as a slur, Holliday noted that both ChatGPT and Google AI did not recognize “wireback,” instead saying the word wasn’t recognized or possibly misspelled. For Holliday, this is one of the fundamental reasons why she believes changes in language and slang will remain the place where AI is always a step behind. “Large language models, AI, it’s a flattening of meaning. Because we as humans co-create the meaning of a particular utterance in a context,” she says.

Police file Closure Report in Satish Panchariya case; no evidence found
