High Court rejects Kangana Ranaut’s pleas to quash defamation case over farmers’ protest

Entertainment The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday rejected a criminal petition filed by actor‑turned‑politician Kangana Ranaut, thereby allowing a defamation case initiated against her to proceed to trial. Ranaut had sought dismissal of both the underlying complaint and the summoning order issued by a Bathinda court under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code. High Court rejects Kangana Ranaut’s pleas to quash defamation case over farmers’ protest The legal action stems from a retweet shared by Ranaut during the 2020–21 farmers’ protests. In her post she wrote, “Ha ha ha she is the same dadi who featured in Time magazine for being the most powerful Indian…. And she is available in 100 rupees. Pakistani jurno’s have hijacked international PR for India in an embarrassing way. We need our own people to speak for us internationally.” During the hearing under Section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the bench of Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya carefully analysed the evidence and arguments. The court stated, “There are specific allegations against the petitioner, who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent’s reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide Justice Dahiya further noted, “The order has been passed after due application of mind to the facts of the case, by examining the preliminary evidence in the light of relevant provisions of law.” Observers highlighted that Ranaut’s defence hinged on the argument that the retweet lacked malice and was shared in good faith—without awareness of any factual inaccuracy. However, the High Court dismissed this rationale, rejecting that she was automatically protected under the Ninth or Tenth Exceptions to Section 499 IPC, which pertain to statements made in good faith for public good or cautioning others. Significantly, the court also pointed out that Ranaut had not tendered any apology or acknowledgement of the mistake after being informed that the person in the image was mistakenly identified—and not the “Shaheen Bano” or the “Time magazine” figure as implied. The Bathinda magistrate had previously issued a summons on February 22, 2022, after preliminary evidence satisfied him that a prima facie case of defamation existed. The High Court affirmed that determination, noting that the magistrate “duly applied mind to the material on record” before issuing process. Justin Timberlake Reveals ‘Debilitating’ Lyme Disease Diagnosis

Entertainment In a lengthy post-tour reflection, Timberlake reveals that he considered ending his tour early Justin Timberlake Joaquin Corchero/Europa Press/Getty Images While reflecting on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, singer Justin Timberlake divulged that he’s been diagnosed with Lyme disease. On the lengthy Instagram post, he clarifies, “I don’t say so you feel bad for me — but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes.” Timberlake recently concluded the lengthy tour in support of his Everything I Thought It Was album. The tour, which embarked in April 2024, has been criticized at various junctures for perceived lackluster performances and numerous postponements.  Timberlake noted on Instagram that the disease has taken a toll on his health in a multitude of ways: “If you’ve experienced this disease or know someone who has — then you’re aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically,” he said. “When I first got the diagnosis, I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness. I was faced with a personal decision. Stop touring? Or, keep going and figure it out. I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I’m so glad I kept going.” Last week, a clip of him performing “Can’t Stop the Feeling” in Transylvania, Romania, went viral, with a TikTok stating, “go girl give us nothing” during a video where he let the crowd lead the vocals, intermittently cutting in. Footage of his bloodshot eyes during a Las Vegas concert led people to think he was intoxicated onstage — the video resurfaced after his June 2024 DWI arrest — but his representatives denied that allegation to TMZ. Timberlake had to cancel multiple dates on the tour. In October, he canceled a New Jersey date because of an injury. In February, he had “some kind of bug” that precluded him from performing in London. He also twice postponed his Columbus, Ohio, date, first because of bronchitis and laryngitis in October, and then because of the flu in February — that was the last North American date on the tour.  From Rolling Stone US. Is Bob Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ Video the Most Copied of All Time?

Entertainment From Margo Price’s new clip to music videos by INXS, Kim Gordon, and “Weird Al,” the lyrics-on-notecard conceit is as enduring as ever Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” was a music-video prototype — it’s been copied ever since. Evening Standard/Getty Images Rolling Stone named Beyoncé’s “Formation” the greatest music video of all time in 2021. But when it comes to the most influential, first place can arguably go to a clip that isn’t even a proper music video — and was shot in black & white 60 years ago. Last week, Margo Price released a jaunty new single, “Don’t Wake Me Up,” accompanied by a video in which she holds up white cards with snippets of lyrics — among them, “cow pasture cemetery,” “honky tonk leaky tent,” “dive bar,” “madness” — as the song plays. It didn’t take a classic-rock historian to see the video as a nod to Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” the canonical footage of the young Bob of 1965 in a London alleyway holding, and discarding, cards with bits of the tune’s lyrics; in the background is poet Allen Ginsberg talking to off-screen Dylan pal Bobby Neuwirth. Not an actual music video, the scene was the opener of documentarian D.A. Pennebaker’s penetrating 1967 film Dont Look Back, shot during Dylan’s U.K. tour of two years before. As Pennebaker later said, the concept came from Dylan himself: “He said, ‘I’ve got this idea for a film where I take a whole lot of sheets of paper and write lyrics for a song, and hold them up as the lyrics come up in the song and then I just toss them away.’ And I said, ‘That’s a fantastic idea.’ So we brought along about 50 shirt cardboards.” The footage was shot in the alley behind the Savoy Hotel in London, and according to Pennebaker (who died in 2019), some of the handwritten lyrics were supplied by Joan Baez and Donovan, who were both in Dylan’s vicinity (and crosshairs) at the time. Once the MTV era began, the sequence, relatively primitive as it was, was seen as a music video prototype and began to inspire knockoffs and tributes. “When Margo approached me with the concept, I did a deep dive on groups who’d done similar projects with poster cards or cue cards and was shocked to see how many there were,” says Hannah Gray Hall, who directed Price’s “Don’t Wake Me Up.” “It’s like keeping a tradition going.” The first may have been “Misfit,” the 1986 video by the stylish British pop band Curiosity Killed the Cat, which featured Andy Warhol dropping white cards during a brief cameo. The following year, INXS’ “Mediate” elevated the Dylan homage to another level. Starting with singer Michael Hutchence, all the band members held up and subsequently dropped lyric cards in sequence. “You had to get the timing right,” INXS’ Andrew Farriss tells Rolling Stone of filming outside of Sydney in the band’s home country of Australia. “You had to make sure the cards landed.” In another salute to the Dylan video, some of the words on the cards were intentionally misspelled. In a sign that not everything was instantly available on YouTube in 1987 (of course, YouTube was yet to exist), Farriss says he wasn’t aware of the source material at the time. “I’m not sure if it was the director’s idea or Michael’s, but I have to admit that I didn’t even know Bob had a video like that,” he says. “Maybe some of the other guys did. All I know is that it sounded like a good idea. I saw [the original] later and went, ‘Oh, wow.’” The recreation was so obvious that one critic at the time noted that “both the filmmaker [Pennebaker] and his subject [Dylan] ought to round up the lawyers,” but that didn’t prevent the song from winning Video of the Year at the 1988 MTV Music Video Awards, in conjunction with the band’s companion clip for “Need You Tonight.” Since then, a cottage industry of “Subterranean Homesick Blues” videos has risen up, each honoring the original in different ways. As with Curiosity Killed the Cat, some approached their remakes as parodies. “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “Bob,” in 2003, found everyone’s favorite satirical hero with a Dylan wig, vest, and alleyway of his own, a pretend Ginsberg behind him, as Yankovic tweaked Dylan’s surrealistic imagery (“Rise to vote, sir/Do geese see God/Do nine men interpret/Nine men, I nod”). Even though “Subterranean Homesick Blues” isn’t one of Dylan’s topical songs, others have used the setup for protest shots of their own. Les Claypool and the Frog Brigade’s “Buzzards of Green Hill” has typically carnivalesque Claypool lyrics, which could be about the perils of drunken driving, hence Claypool’s use of cue cards in the song’s video. Earlier this year, Kim Gordon redid the packing-list lyrics of “Bye Bye” into a minimalist anti-Trump protest song, “Bye Bye 25!,” complete with a video with Gordon holding cards with the new lyrics (“immigrant,” “hate,” “injustice”). Artist Ed Ruscha has a Sonic Youth connection of his own (the band named its song “Brave Men Run” after one of his paintings) and a Dylan one too: In 2012, his offered up a lyric-card homage, honoring friend and conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner with snippets of Weiner’s own words. Wir sind Helden’s 2005 video “Nur ein Wort” (“Just One Word”) featured the now-defunct German pop band in their own alley, dancing and cavorting as they flashed their lyric sheets. (Since the song is about encouraging a private person to express themselves — “your silence is your tent” — the use of words in the video made conceptual sense.) And before he was slaying zombies, Andrew Lincoln was wooing Keira Knightley in Love Actually with, yep, words on white cards. In the case of Price’s video, director Hall says Price’s team approached her about doing something similar to Dylan, “but they said to make it my own and do a contemporary take on it.” Using 77 different poster-board cards for her shoot, Hall thinks those lyric snippets also connect

Idles Debut Raucous Single ‘Rabbit Run’ From Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Caught Stealing’

Entertainment The Austin Butler-starring film arrives in theaters on Aug. 29 Idles debuted a new single, “Rabbit Run,” which was written for Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming film Caught Stealing. The song is one of four original tracks the rock band contributed to the movie’s soundtrack and they also recorded the full film score composed by Rob Simonsen. The soundtrack, out Aug. 29 via Protozoa/Partisan Records, additionally features a cover of the Junior Marvin’s “Police and Thieves,” which was previously covered by The Clash on their 1977 self-titled debut LP. “Rabbit Run” was inspired by the “gritty energy of the 1990s New York punk scene” that creates the backdrop of Caught Stealing. The film, in theaters Aug. 29, stars Austin Butler as a former baseball player and current bartender who finds himself caught up in a motley crew of threatening gangsters. “This has been a huge opportunity for us that seemingly came about after a chance meeting backstage at Fallon when we both happened to be guests on the same day,” Idles frontman Joe Talbot said in a statement. “But in hindsight, I realize that Darren is one of my favorite directors and his films have in some ways made me who I am as an artist. This lucid dream has been a lifetime in the making and one that I will live over and over with a huge sense of humility and joy.” “I built Caught Stealing to be a roller coaster of fun and wanted to supercharge the film by main lining a punk sensibility,” Aronofsky said. “I don’t think a band has really been tasked with performing a score for a movie. Who better to collaborate with than Idles? It has been a dream watching them bend their notes to blast a hole in our movie screen.” Simonsen added, “I was really excited by the idea that Darren had for our third project together, which was to write a score for Idles, using them as our orchestra. They had created original songs for the film, and building a palette that started from their sound — the incredible textures they create through inventive use of feedback, distortion, and pedals — was a really satisfying challenge. Our work with the band was genuinely inspiring. They’re not only extraordinarily talented musicians, but individuals with clear eyes, big hearts, and bold souls.” Caught Stealing also stars Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito Martínez Ocasio, and Carol Kane. It directed by Aronofsky from a screenplay by Charlie Huston, based on his book of the same name.  From Rolling Stone US. Read More
