Malayalam cinema icon Sreenivasan passed away at the age of 69 on December 20. The actor-filmmaker, who is known for movies like Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, Vadakkunokkiyantram and Katha Parayumpol, died due to prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment at his Udayamperoor residence for a long time. According to reports, his health started deteriorating and he was then admitted to a hospital in Thrippunithura. PTI confirmed his death on Saturday. Sreenivasan’s unfortunate demise created shockwaves in the industry and among his followers. Entertainment Who was Sreenivasan? Born in 1956, Sreenivasan had a glorious close to five decades in the industry. He acted in over 225 films in his career and wrote the screenplay for many films. The actor was a recipient of some notable awards like the National Award, Kerala State Film Awards, Kerala Film Critics Association Awards and multiple Filmfare awards. He made his acting debut with Manimuzhakkam, which was released in 1976. His first leading role was in Sanghaganam, after which he was part of several movies like Mela, Aram + Aram = Kinnaram, Kinnaripuzhayoram, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu, Artham, Azhakiya Ravanan and Chithram, to name a few. After working for several years in the industry as an actor, he wrote his first film in 1981 with the title Odaruthammava Aalariyam. He also acted and scripted in movies like Varavelpu, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Nadodikkattu and its sequels, Pattanapravesham, and Akkare Akkare Akkare. After writing and acting, he also directed in Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala. The actor then collaborated with several renowned directors like Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad and Kamal. Sreenivasan was last seen in Uriyadi in 2020. The movie also featured Manasa Radhakrishnan, Arya, Aju Varghese, Siddique and Indrans in key roles. The film was released in theatres on January 17, 2020. The movie was directed by John Varghese. As per reports, Uriyadi was the last movie of Sreenivasan. Entertainment About Sreenivasan’s personal life Talking about his personal life, he was survived by his wife, Vimala Sreenivasan, and two children, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan. After releasing the first two singles of their film, the makers now unveiled the official teaser of their film. In the latest teaser, the plotline of the Ravi Teja starrer becomes much clearer. It’s a conventional storyline — Ravi Teja plays a happily married man who nonetheless falls in love with a young woman on a business trip. Once he returns home, the protagonist has a major task ahead of him — covering up his new romantic affair from his wife (Dimple Hayathi), while finding a way to talk about his marital status to his newly-made girlfriend (Ashika Ranganath).  Directed by Kishore Tirumala, BMW has a massively impressive ensemble cast, including actors like Sunil, Muralidhar Goud, Vennela Kishore, Satya, and Subhalekha Sudhakar. The film’s technical team includes cinematographer Prasad Murella, editor Sreekar Prasad, and production designer AS Prakash. Bheems Ceciroleo, who was also the composer for Ravi Teja’s previous release Mass Jathara, is the music director for BMW.  The film was officially launched in June this year, with shoot commencing in Hyderabad. It is worth noting that the actor’s Mersal, directed by Atlee, too, was bought by Zee Tamil. The film, marking the first collaboration between Vijay and H Vinoth, is the actor’s last film before his political plunge in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. He will make his electoral debut with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Jana Nayagan also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mamitha Baiju, and Narain. The film reunites Vijay with Prakash Raj after Varisu, Pooja after Beast, and Gautham Vasudev Menon after Leo. He is also lending the vocals. Titled ‘Love Advice Song‘, the song will be out on Saturday at 4 PM. The makers released the first single from the film, ‘Manasu Valikudhu‘, in November. Helmed by debutant MC Ganesh Chandra, nothing much is known about the film’s plot except that it is going to be a rom-com. Ganesh Chandra is known for his work as a cinematographer in films such as Salim, Enkitta Mothathe, Jolly O Gymkhana, and Emakku Thozhil Romance. Vijay Antony had earlier announced that he will take up music composing for films not featuring him like before, owing to the response his songs are garnering in concerts, starting with Pookie. While it remains the same officially, there is some buzz within the industry that the makers are moving it ahead by four days, bringing it one day closer to director H Vinoth’s Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay in his final film before retirement from acting. For the uninitiated, Jana Nayagan is slated for a January 09 release. If reports are true, it would mean a day’s gap between the release of two big-ticket films, which are among the most highly anticipated film in Tamil cinema in 2026. According to industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, a former contributor for TNIE, this would cause some headache to distributors and exhibitors in Tamil Nadu, especially those owning single screen theatres. If reports have some truth to them, the advancement of Parasakthi‘s release would go against the convention of filmmakers postponing their films to avoid direct box-office clashes with those featuring relatively bigger stars. For example, Suriya’s Kanguva postponed its release to not have the clash with Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan out of the former actor’s respect for the superstar. Likewise, Vijay Antony’s film Sakthi Thirumagan pushed its release back to avoid a clash with Sivakarthikeyan’s Madharaasi.
