Raman Negi Files Suit Against The Local Train Over Copyright and Royalties

Entertainment (Left) Raman Negi and The Local Train. Photos: Maan Boruah, Courtesy of the artist Raman Negi, founding member and former frontman of rock band The Local Train, has filed a commercial suit at the Delhi High Court against his former bandmates over alleged copyright infringement, denial of royalties, and unlawful appropriation of trademarks. The case, which seeks protection and enforcement of Negi’s statutory rights under the Copyright Act of 1957, was briefly heard by Justice Tejas Karia and will now be taken up in March 2026, Bar and Bench reports. According to the suit, Negi conceived, authored, and composed several original songs even before The Local Train was formed and continued to be the principal creative force during his time with the band. He claims sole authorship of lyrics for 15 songs released as part of the albums Aalas Ka Pedh (2015) and Vaaqif (2018), and sole composition credit for five songs, including “Choo Lo,” “Aaoge Tum Kabhi,” and “Kaisey Jiyun.” Other musical compositions were reportedly jointly authored by Negi along with one of the defendants or an erstwhile band member, with his authorship and creative contributions consistently acknowledged within the band through documents, communications, and public statements. In his filing, Negi has categorized the works into three groups: independently owned literary works and select musical compositions where he claims 100 percent ownership; jointly authored musical compositions where he claims an undivided 50 percent share; and jointly produced sound recordings and audio-visual works where he asserts not less than a one-fourth share. Negi has asserted that he never executed any written assignment or waiver of his copyright, performer’s rights, or moral rights in favor of the defendants, as required under the Copyright Act. His decision to exit the band was communicated in December 2021, subject to settlement of accounts and completion of exit formalities, which allegedly never took place despite repeated follow-ups. The suit alleges that the defendants failed to reconcile royalties, provide financial disclosures, or execute a lawful retirement deed. During this period, they allegedly continued to commercially exploit Negi’s copyrighted works across digital platforms, withheld royalty information and revenues, and shifted funds without transparency. Negi says that in August 2022, while his exit was still incomplete, one of the defendants filed trademark applications in their exclusive names without his knowledge or consent, allegedly seeking to unlawfully appropriate goodwill generated primarily through his creative contributions. After rejecting the retirement deed that sought to deprive him of all present and future royalty and proprietary rights, Negi issued a legal notice in December 2024 demanding work-wise and source-wise revenue details. The defendants allegedly refused to acknowledge his rights or provide the requested disclosures. Following failed negotiations, Negi initiated pre-litigation mediation before the Delhi High Court Mediation and Conciliation Centre in March 2025. The mediation proceedings were eventually closed as “not settled” in September 2025, following which he instituted the present suit. The suit seeks declarations of ownership across all categories of works, permanent injunctions restraining infringement and unauthorized exploitation, rendition of accounts, payment of royalties and revenues due, reliefs against allegedly illegal trademark registrations, as well as damages, interest, and costs. The Local Train and Raman Negi parted ways around early 2022. Since then, Negi has gone on to release two albums—Shakhsiyat in 2022 and Chaltey Purzay in 2024. The Local Train’s Ramit Mehra, Sahil Sarin, and Paras Thakur have been working on a new album and dropped the song “Tu Hai Kahaan” with veteran pop artist Lucky Ali for the movie Do Aur Do Pyaar in 2024. Watch Radiohead Wrap Up Their 2025 European Tour with a Soaring ‘Karma Police’

Entertainment All eyes now go to 2026, but bassist Colin Greenwood has a busy tour schedule with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Radiohead could be headed towards another hiatus Radiohead brought their European tour to a close Tuesday night at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, following 20 shows in five cities. They rounded out the set with a soaring rendition of “Karma Police.” “Thank you very much for coming to see us,” Thom Yorke told the crowd. “Thanks to everyone who came to see us on this tour. We hope you have great, festive holidays. Get home safe. Good night. Thank you.” The tour marked Radiohead’s first live shows in seven years, their first time touring without a new album to support, their first time playing in the round, and their first time playing with new touring drummer Chris Vatalaro. Prior to the announcement of the shows, some fans genuinely feared that Radiohead had quietly broken up due to the long period of inactivity and the formation of side projects like the Smile. And in a series of interviews with the Times UK shortly before opening night, they did admit to some tensions within the band. “It wasn’t great on the last round,” said guitarist Ed O’Brien. “I enjoyed the gigs but hated the rest. We felt disconnected, fucking spent. It happens. This has been our whole life — what else is there? Look, success has a funny effect on people — I just didn’t want to do it anymore. And I told them that.” “I went through a very long dark night of the soul,” O’Brien continued. “I had a deep depression. I hit the bottom in 2021. And one of the things that was lovely coming out of it was realizing how much I love these guys. I met them when I was 17, and I have gone from thinking I can’t see myself doing it again to realizing that, you know, we do have some stellar songs.” The band rehearsed roughly 70 songs prior to the tour, and they wound up playing 45 of them. Selections from In Rainbows, Ok Computer, Hail to the Thief, The Bends, and Kid A were high in the mix. They did relatively little from A Moon Shaped Pool, Amnesiac, and the King of Limbs. And despite the predictable screams for “Creep,” they never went near Pablo Honey. Fans in America are anxiously awaiting news of possible dates over here, but there’s yet to be any sort of hint that’s going to happen. The summer might seem like a natural time to come to the States and hit major festivals and outdoor sheds, but bassist Colin Greenwood has signed onto another tour with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds that will occupy his time throughout June, July, and August. There are also Australian shows in January and February. That opens up windows in the spring and fall, in theory. Radiohead fans should also brace for the possibility that this was a European-only affair, and the band is about to head back into hibernation. But they shouldn’t lose faith. These were amazing shows that received near-universal acclaim; they proved they don’t need new material to draw sell-out crowds, and it seems like the band resolved whatever issues they had during the interregnum. They may not play again in 2026, but odds are extremely high that they’ll play again in the near future. Everyone just needs to be patient. (The same exact thing applies to Oasis fans. But you people had 41 shows in 11 countries this year, and have less to complain about.) From Rolling Stone US. Read More

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Is the Most Expensive Video-Game Cut Scene Ever Made

Entertainment James Cameron’s blockbuster saga returns with more battles, more eye candy, and enough déjà vu to make you feel blue There are two dates that are considered sacred to movie lovers, film historians, and those who diligently chart the evolution of the seventh art. The first is October 6th, 1927, when Al Jolson told the audience “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” and The Jazz Singer officially ushered in the sound era. The second is December 9th, 2009, a.k.a. the premiere of Avatar, when the general pubic could finally bask in what James Cameron had conjured up in the name of turning the fantastic into the eerily photorealistic, and hear characters breezily throw around the word “unobtainium.” We’re kidding (or are we?!), yet you can’t underestimate how seismic this blockbuster was in terms of technological breakthroughs any more than you could blow off its box-office bona fides — it remains the highest grossing movie to date. Nor could you deny that all that hyperpixelized 3D sound and fury was being utilized to tell a story that felt as elemental and simplistic as a cave painting. It was part of Avatar‘s global appeal as much as the overwhelming visuals; love, war, and the colonial ransacking of resources in the name of corporate bottom lines tend to play universally. For some, it also had the feeling of several philharmonic orchestras being assembled to play an extravagantly Wagnerian rendition of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) made up for that aspect by quadrupling the in-franchise mythology and pioneering underwater performance-capture filmmaking, thus combining three of Cameron’s passions: deep-sea exploration, developing state-of-the-art tech, and putting actors through hell. Everyone now expects the writer, director, and King of the World to reinvent the wheel every time out, yet three films into what he’s said is a five-film series, Avatar: Fire and Ash suggests that he’s happy to simply settle into a groove for a bit. There are more stand-offs between the natives of Pandora and the “sky people” who want to ransack the planet, more family drama and ecological strife, more firefights in the heavens and on the All-Mother’s earth, more blue-skinned teens calling each other “bro.” Familiarity doesn’t breed outright contempt here, but it certainly doesn’t inspire shock or awe, either. The story continues, while Cameron goes to great pains to give the people what he believes they want: the most expensive three-hour video-game cut scene ever made. Mission accomplished. Abandon hope, all ye who do not remember every single detail of the previous two films or possess a Ph.D in Avatar Narrative History 101. Part Three throws viewers right into the fire, with the Sullys collectively mourning the loss of their eldest child at the end of The Way of Water. Their collective grief is interrupted by the fact that the resident human among them, Spider — played by Jack Champion, whose name sounds like a James Cameron character — is in need of help ASAP. The batteries on his oxygen mask have a habit of cutting out at inconvenient moments, so Jake (Sam Worthington) makes an executive decision: The kid needs to return to his kind. His wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), his son and Spider’s best bro Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), their adopted daughter Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), and the Sullys’ youngest, Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss), don’t want him to leave. Spider’s whole vibe is very “Whoa, think I took too many ‘shrooms during Phish’s second set,” and his survival may be at risk, but this “pinkskin?” He’s still family. The idea is that they’ll transport Spider back to the base where the Na’vi-friendly humans live via caravan, with members of the reef tribe known as the Metkayina accompanying them for safety. It will be an adventure, Jake says. It will also be an ambush. Because there’s this other tribe, see, called the Mangkwan, and because their home terrain was in the path of a raging volcano, they’ve essentially become warring godless heathen. Led by Varang (Oona Chaplin, Charlie’s granddaughter), they swoop down on the group’s blimp-like skyships and give Cameron & co. the chance to break up the handwringing by staging a massive attack sequence. The Sullys are split up. Spider nearly asphyxiates to death, until Kiri connects him to the spirit that connects all living things on Pandora and voila, the kid with the dreads can survive without a mask now. Meanwhile, Spider’s biological dad, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) — tough-as-shit marine, former dead person resurrected as a human-Na’vi “recombinant,” big blue bad guy — still wants to capture Jake for being a “traitor to humanity.” If he has to form an alliance with Varang and Mangkwan to make that happen, and if said alliance means he’s going to get horizontal with this unhinged kindred warrior, so be it. Plus: Evil scientists, venture capitalists, and shorts-wearing former corporate bigwig Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) all want to study Spider to see if they can replicate his ability to breath Pandora’s air, which would be gamechanging in terms of strip mining resources en masse. Also: The tulkun, those whale-like creatures with their own tribal culture, are still being hunted for their brain juice, and still stick to their pacifist ways; their exile of a member that fought back has Lo’ak in a tizzy. And: the Metkayina remain skeptical that Jake is the one meant to unite all tribes, and fear his presence will once again bring enemies to their home. Stephen Lang in ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash.’20TH CENTURY STUDIOS Lots going on here subplots-wise, in other words. Lot of eye candy being served up, in great big scoopfuls. A whole lotta lead-up to a huge, epic battle that takes up the bulk of Fire and Ash‘s final quarter, cross-cut between skirmishes in the sky and aquamarine melees, punctuated by huge beasties going full kaiju on ships and mecha-suited troops. There are births and deaths and the reminder that, for all of the digital blitzkrieg on display, the performance-capture technology that Cameron helped both upgrade and refine remains the secret weapon of this whole endeavor. Wiz Khalifa Sentenced to 9 Months in Prison in Romania for Weed Possession

Entertainment The rapper is currently in the United States, and it’s unclear if Romania will try to force his extradition Wiz Khalifa at a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game in July 2025. Justin K. Aller/Getty Images Wiz Khalifa was sentenced in absentia to nine months in prison in Romania following an appeal of a drug case brought after the rapper allegedly smoked weed on stage last year. The rapper (real name Cameron Jibril Thomaz) was detained and charged with illegal drug possession in July 2024 after sparking a joint while performing at a festival in Costinești. He was released soon after and apologized on X, saying, “I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage.”  Still, prosecutors in Romania pursued a case against Wiz, with an initial ruling by the Constanța Tribunal imposing a 3,000 lei fine (about $690), per the Romanian newspaper CanCan. But the Constanța branch of Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) appealed the decision and won.  Subsequently, Khalifa was sentenced to nine months in prison for the unlawful possession of dangerous drugs for personal use. The decision is reportedly final under Romanian law. Representatives for Khalifa did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s request for comment. DIICOT also did not immediately return a request for comment.  It’s unclear if Romanian authorities will try to extradite Khalifa back to the country. At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be any serious risk of him serving the sentence. Wiz is currently in the United States and spent about two-and-a-half hours streaming (and smoking weed) on Twitch yesterday (Dec. 17). On Tuesday night, he made a cameo at Gunna’s concert in Los Angeles. Romania has strict laws around the use of cannabis, which remains illegal for both recreational and medical use. Just over a decade ago, it was classified as a high-risk medication. Romanian physicians cannot prescribe cannabis to patients, but those who receive their prescription from elsewhere in the EU are allowed to enter the country with proper documentation. Illegal drug possession for personal use is punishable by anywhere between three months and two years in prison or a fine for drugs classified as a risk. From Rolling Stone US. Read More

How a Jon Hamm TikTok Meme Turned Kato’s 2009 EDM Track Into a Global Viral Hit

Entertainment Kato’s “Turn the Lights Off” made it to the top of a Spotify chart: “Never in a million years!” Kato; Jon Hamm Lasse Lagoni*; Apple Tv On TikTok, few things are more fun than a reaction video. Over the past several weeks, EDM star Kato’s song “Turn the Lights Off,” featuring Jon Nørgaard, has gone viral on TikTok and Reels thanks to a trend built around a Jon Hamm-in-the-club scene. The resurgence has been so strong that the track entered the Canadian Hot 100 and topped Spotify’s Viral chart — 15 years after its initial release. Kato says that “never in a million years” did he see his song coming back like this. “This is so random. I never thought it could be possible to get a worldwide hit with a song we released 15 years ago,” Kato tells Rolling Stone. “But hey, I love it! I feel humbled by everything happening, and thankful that something we created 15 years ago can have a positive impact on people today.” The TikTok trend sees users posting a phrase like, “When you’re petting a dog and someone says, ‘Wow, he usually doesn’t like anyone,’” or “When she reaches over to scratch the back of your head” with a video of themselves, before cutting to a close-up clip of Jon Hamm blissfully dancing in a club from the Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors. “I’m still in some kind of shock. What’s happening right now is beyond imagination,” Kato adds. “It still feels like it’s a dream. Social media can really change people’s lives overnight. I’m overwhelmed by all the attention and new possibilities.” One sound with the song has been used more than 40,000 times on the platform, with some videos reaching more than one million likes. Brett Gelman teased fans of Stranger Things by recreating the meme with the caption, “Me cause I know how it ends and you don’t.” Kato says he found out about the trend after being tagged in some videos from Ukrainian and Russian profiles on Instagram, but he didn’t understand what the posts meant. He says he refrained from sharing the videos outside of fear that they were some sort of posts related to the country’s war. “I just watched this thing grow, and I was so happy to realize that the trend had a positive message, and to see it spread to the whole world,” he says. Along with the Spotify Viral chart, the song also reached No. 74 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 for this week. Kato himself recreated the meme trend, reacting to the news of the song topping the Spotify chart. “When you realize that the song you made 15 years ago…” he captioned the post. “Is the No. 1 viral song in the world!” Kato says he’s a big fan of Jon Hamm — especially his role in Mad Men — and would “love to meet him someday.” He adds, “It´s an honor that my music ended up being a part of this trend, with a true legend and the positive reactions it has created so far.” Kato now plans to continue touring the world, and “give something back” to all the people responsible for the song’s revival. Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri faces copyright trouble; Trimurti Films moves Bombay HC against Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions over ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ use

Entertainment A legal dispute has surfaced ahead of the release of Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, with Trimurti Films Pvt Ltd approaching the Bombay High Court against Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, alleging copyright infringement of the iconic 1992 song ‘Saat Samundar Paar’. The production house has claimed that the upcoming film unlawfully uses the tune and lyrics of the song without authorisation. Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri faces copyright trouble; Trimurti Films moves Bombay HC against Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions over ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ use According to the suit, Trimurti Films has sought damages amounting to Rs. 10 crore along with a permanent injunction to restrain the use, exploitation, adaptation or remix of ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ in Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, which is scheduled to release on December 25, or in any other film. The matter is expected to be closely watched, given the prominence of the parties involved and the film’s imminent theatrical release. The lawsuit names Dharma Productions and Namah Pictures Pvt Ltd — the producers of the film — as defendants. It also includes music label Saregama India Ltd and rapper-composer Aditya Prateek Singh, popularly known as Badshah, who is associated with the alleged new version of the song. Trimurti Films has contended that the usage infringes upon its exclusive rights over the original composition. While the defendants are yet to issue an official statement on the matter, the case adds to the growing list of copyright-related disputes involving the reimagining of classic Hindi film songs. In recent years, remixes and reinterpretations of popular tracks have frequently drawn scrutiny from original rights holders, often resulting in legal action. Released in 1992, ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ featured in the film Vishwatma and was picturised on Divya Bharti. Sung by Sadhana Sargam and composed by Viju Shah, the song became one of the most recognisable chartbusters of the decade. Its popularity has endured over the years, making it a nostalgic favourite and a commercially valuable piece of intellectual property for its rights holders. Meanwhile, Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri is an upcoming romantic comedy directed by Sameer Vidwans. Produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Bhumika Tewari, Shareen Mantri Kedia and Kishor Arora under the banners of Dharma Productions and Namah Pictures, the film stars Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday in the lead roles, with Neena Gupta, Jackie Shroff and Tiku Talsania in supporting roles. With its release slated for December 25, the film now finds itself in the spotlight for reasons beyond its on-screen romance. Shilpa Shetty BREAKS SILENCE on alleged Rs 60 crores fraud case: “Baseless attempt to link my name to this matter”

Entertainment Actor Shilpa Shetty has issued a detailed clarification after her name surfaced in connection with an alleged Rs 60 crores fraud case under Section 420 of the IPC. Responding to reports, Shetty termed the attempt to link her to the matter as “baseless” and said her association with the concerned company was limited and non-operational. Shilpa Shetty BREAKS SILENCE on alleged Rs 60 crores fraud case: “Baseless attempt to link my name to this matter” In her statement, Shetty clarified, “I am deeply saddened by the baseless attempt to link my name to this matter. My association with the company was strictly in a non-executive capacity, with no role in its operations, finances, decision making or any signing authority. In fact like several other public figures I had endorsed certain products for the home shopping channel , in a professional capacity , for which payments due to me remain outstanding.” Shetty further revealed, “I want to put it on record that almost 20 Cr rupees has been loaned to the company by us as a family and the said amount remains unpaid.” Calling the allegations legally untenable, Shetty pointed out, “The mischievous attempt to impute criminal liability on me, particularly after an unexplained delay of nearly nine years is legally unsustainable and contrary to settled principles of law. Despite these facts, my name continues to be unnecessarily dragged into the proceedings, which is both distressing and unjustified. Such unwarranted allegations not only misrepresent facts but also result in a woman’s dignity, integrity, and reputation being unfairly trampled upon in the public domain.” Addressing the personal impact of the allegations, Shetty said such claims unfairly affect a woman’s dignity and integrity in the public domain. Quoting the Bhagavad Gita, she noted that failing to oppose injustice amounts to adharma, and confirmed that a quashing petition has already been filed before the Bombay High Court. The actor said she has full faith in the judicial process and will pursue all appropriate legal remedies to safeguard her rights and reputation. Shetty also urged the media to verify facts and report responsibly while covering the matter.
