RSI Recommends: Must-See Indie Films At Yellowstone International Film Festival 2025

Entertainment The Yellowstone International Film Festival 2025 (YIFF 2025) is set to take place from Nov. 13 to 20, 2025, in Mumbai at the PVR dynamix, Juhu. With an array of categories including documentaries, shorts, feature films, and LGBTQIA+ films, this year’s edition will feature over 100 global films, with 50 of them being Indian and Asian premieres. A celebration of the finest picks from independent cinema, the festival will also feature acclaimed international titles, such as Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day by Ivona Juka, which is about the lives of four Yugosalvian gay filmmakers trying to evade the communist party’s suspicion in the 1950’s, and Aisha Can’t Fly by Morad Mostafa — which depicts the rifts between African migrant groups and the underworld through the eyes of Aisha, a Somali caregiver. Additionally, the festival’s short film sections will premiere works from global festival circuits, including Cannes winner I’m Glad You’re Dead Now by Tawfeek Barhom, Cannes selection Across the Waters and DISC by Viv Li, and TIFF winner I Fear Blue Skies by Salar Pashtoonyar, to name a few. Along with these screenings, audiences can also expect masterclasses with panelists like Hansal Mehta, Ashwiny Iyer, Rohan Kanawade, Shoojit Sircar, and more.  Ahead of the upcoming eight-day festival, Rolling Stone India spotlights some of the Indian films from YIFF 2025 that should be on your radar. Dream Factory (2023) This Arushi Nigam Documentary explores the unsung heroes of the Bollywood production industry, who painstakingly work behind the scenes to bolster the hero’s journey. Ranging from light and sound operators to spot dadas, Nigam’s documentary offers an intimate glimpse into the invisible labor of Mumbai and New Delhi-based crews working backstage. Think Luck By Chance, but with the gritty realism of Faiza Ahmand Khan’s Supermen of Malegaon.  Places I’ve Called My Own (2023) This 28-minute film captures the conflicting emotions that bubble up when you return to the place you once called home. For Tara, a U.S. returnee in the midst of an I.V.F. procedure, coming back means confronting layers of grief, guilt, and unresolved desire. Amidst her father’s death, her mother’s denial about her sexual orientation, and her ex-girlfriend rebuilding a life with a man, Tara grapples with navigating a multitude of emotions that force her to confront what home and belonging truly mean. Village Of Bastards (2024) Amritansh Shukhla and Uday Thakur’s gripping socio-cultural documentary follows the patriarchally entrenched tradition of ancestral sex-work carried out in the village of Natpurwa, Uttar Pradesh. With girls as young as 15 getting into the inter-generational occupation of sex trade, this gut-wrenching feature brings to light the helplessness of the prostitutes, who continue to be exploited not just by the villagers, but also by the media and government. Untouchable: Laughing Out Caste (2024) Stand-up comedian Manjeet Sarkar’s feature-length documentary combines humor and social taboos into a potent mix, making you, the audience, confront uncomfortable truths. Spanning statewide tours, Sarkar uses the mic to vocalize his personal journey of growing up as a Dalit individual, spotlighting the murky intricacies of the oppressive Indian caste system through razor-sharp wit and insightful observations. Notably, Sarkar is also India’s first Dalit comedian to have toured nationally and performed at the United Nations. P for Paparazzi (2024) Diving into the life of Manoj, a Nepali photographer, the film captures the dizzying life of the paparazzi. Beyond the celebrity photo-ops, glitz and glamor, and the constant flare of flashlights, the Divya Kharnare film depicts the hidden complexities, moral dilemmas, medical hiccups, and financial constraints in the life of a paparazzi photographer that often go unnoticed to the public eye. Threads In Tune (2024) Syncing the melodious tunes of the harpsichord with the intricate workings of Indian looms, Threads In Tune adds a fantastical element to the arduous process of making rugs and throws. Showcasing the craftsmanship, step by step, the film combines unique cinematography while pulling focus on homegrown artisans’ modern tools to carry on timeless traditions. The film has won several awards, such as the Barcelona Indie Filmmakers Festival BARCIFF 2024 and the Prague Independent Film Festival 2025, to name a few. Loop Line (2024) Renuka Shahane’s Marathi animated film Loop Line follows the life of a middle-class housewife, bogged down by incessant chores and her husband’s chauvinistic behavior, who resorts to mental fantasies as a form of escapism. Using animation as a medium, Shahane’s directorial debut explores the grave yet never-ending cycle of domestic subjugation that is prevalent in Indian traditional households. Kaisi Yeh Paheli (2025) Resting at the intersection of an Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery and a slice-of-life drama, Kaisi Yeh Paheli teases a premise that’s far deeper and darker than what meets the eye. Set in the sleepy town of Kalimpong, the film dissects the turbulent relationship between Utam, a policeman, and his mother, as she attempts to join him in solving a compelling case that hits closer to home than either of them expected. Dalit Subbaiah: Voice of The Rebels (2025) Narrating the tale of the late Dalit revolutionary singer, writer, and activist Lenin Subbaiah, the award-winning M.K.P. Gridaran documentary shines a light on artistic expression as a socio-political tool for change. Subbaiah was also the founder of a music troupe called Viduthalai Kalai Kuzhu (Voice Of Liberation-A Cultural Troupe), which amplified caste-based issues and propagated Ambedkarite ideologies through music. Likewise, the feature-length film also brings to attention Margazhiyil Makkalisai, a radical musical festival helmed by Tamil rapper, singer, and songwriter Arivu. Using music as a catalyst, the documentary not only chronicles Subbaiah’s legacy but also underscores the plethora of non-hegemonic musical diversity within marginalized communities in India. Chingam (2025) Set against the rural Himanchali backdrop, Ajay and Radhika, two childhood sweethearts, find their way back to each other as life deals them both losing cards. The film captures how Ajay, a failed singer, and Radhika, now married, unravel the layers of love, regrets, and the magic of second chances. Directed by Abhay Sharma, the debut feature also has him acting as the male lead. Sheness

‘SNL’: Watch Sombr Perform ’12 to 12,’ ‘Back to Friends’

Entertainment The NYC native debuts on the late night show with two tracks from his first EP, I Barely Know Her Singer-songwriter Sombr debuted on Saturday Night Live with two hits from I Barely Know Her, his debut album that he released in August. The New York City native, who just picked up a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, opened with “12 to 12,” an MTV Video Music Awards nominee for Song of the Summer. Sombr returned later at the piano with “Back to Friends,” which he alone wrote and produced. The lead single from the ten-track LP, “Back to Friends” is one of Rolling Stone‘s Best Songs of 2025 So Far, as it “plays out like an impassioned conversation that bleeds through the walls and captures the melodrama of teenage love.” Sombr, whose real name is Shane Boose, “performs with a distinct internal confidence and external charm that has been notably absent in the withering releases from many of his male contemporaries in pop,” as Rolling Stone‘s Larisha Paul wrote in a positive review of his first album. Sombr’s stop at SNL coincided with the end of the North American leg of The Late Nights & Young Romance Tour, which he sold out. Early next month, he’ll head to New Zealand and Australia before beginning a run of shows in Europe in February. “It’s hard to step back and be like, ‘Wow, this is amazing’ when everything is happening so fast, but it is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” the 20-year-old revealed to MTV in September, before making his awards show debut at the VMAs. “Being able to meet all these people, go to all these countries, and see all these new faces and beautiful people who connect with my music — it’s all I ever wanted to do in my life, so it’s the best thing ever.” From Rolling Stone US. OutKast, White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, and Salt-N-Pepa Join Rock Hall of Fame at Epic Ceremony

Entertainment Meg White didn’t show up and Andre 3000 didn’t perform with Big Boi, but it was still an incredible evening featuring appearances by Olivia Rodrigo, David Letterman, Stevie Wonder, and Doja Cat In a more fantastical universe than our own, the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at L.A.’s Peacock Theater would have featured Jack White and Meg White coming together as the White Stripes for the first time in 16 years, OutKast‘s first performance since their 2014 reunion tour, and Paul Rodgers fronting Bad Company one last time. In our actual universe, Meg was a no-show, OutKast delivered a speech but not a performance, and drummer Simon Kirke was forced to fly the Bad Company banner on his own. Fortunately, these barely felt like disappointments — as historic as they would have been — because the Hall of Fame once again delivered a spectacular show by bringing in heavyweights like Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Doja Cat, Missy Elliott, the Killers, Stevie Wonder, Flea, Donald Glover, David Letterman, Jennifer Hudson, Elton John, and Janelle Monae to speak and perform alongside inductees Salt-N-Pepa, Jack White, OutKast, Soundgarden, and Cyndi Lauper. And it was Lauper who captured the emotional sentiment of the evening near the end of the show. “I know I stand on the shoulders of the women in the industry who came before me,” she said. “My shoulders are broad enough to have the women that come after me stand on mine. And the little kid in me still believes that rock & roll can save the world. Rock & roll is a big, wonderful quilt of a lot of different styles of music, thank goodness.” Several hours earlier, Stevie Wonder kicked off the night by honoring Sly Stone with a high-energy medley of “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” and “Higher,” where he was joined by Flea, Beck, Maxwell, Questlove, and Jennifer Hudson. The Hall of Fame clearly meant something to Stone since he made an extraordinarily rare public appearance at the 1993 ceremony when Sly and the Family Stone were inducted, and it felt right to begin the show by honoring his genius even though we lost an astounding number of icons this year. Bad Company emerged onto the scene in 1973, just as Sly and the Family Stone were melting down after one of the greatest five-year runs in music history. It’s been a difficult few years for Bad Company because guitarist Mick Ralphs died in March following a debilitating stroke several years ago, and frontman Paul Rodgers is still recovering from several strokes of his own. (Bassist Boz Burrell died in 2006.) Rodgers was initially optimistic he’d show up and perform a few songs, but he backed out last week because it was simply too stressful for him. Kirke was on hand to accept the award on behalf of the band from Mick Fleetwood. “They say it’s better to travel than arrive,” he said. “But I don’t know. Tonight I’ve arrived with the band, and I’m so grateful…I want to acknowledge one of the great rock singers of all time, my friend, Mr. Paul Rodgers.” Rodgers delivered a brief, pre-taped speech of his own. “Be at peace with God,” he said. “Whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. It is still a beautiful world. My prayer for us is that we all choose love.” Prior to the speeches, Kirke sat behind the drum kit in his tuxedo and banged out “Feel Like Makin’ Love” and “Can’t Get Enough” with Chris Robinson, Bryan Adams, Joe Perry, and Nancy Wilson. The show jumped from the Seventies to the Nineties when 2023 inductee Missy Elliott came out to welcome Salt-N-Pepa as the first female hip-hop act in the Hall of Fame. “This is historical,” she said. “I watched these three ladies from high school. The reason you even know Missy Elliott’s name is because of Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella. They inspired me to become an M.C…They came out the gate unapologetic, unforgettable, timeless. They were trailblazers and unstoppable. They stepped outside of the box and they broke all the molds. They made women like me feel heard and empowered.” Salt and Pepa have only recently made peace with Spinderella after a protracted legal spat, and an unfortunate war of words in the press. But they walked up to the podium as a unified force to accept the overdue honor. “This moment right here is bigger than us,” said Cheryl “Salt” James. “This is for every woman who picked up a mic when they told her she couldn’t, for every sister who had to fight twice as hard to be heard, for every artist who ever had to learn that ownership is the real freedom.” Sandra “Pepa” Denton thanked her mother, who died just a couple of weeks ago. “She was my strength,” she said. “She was my guidance. She taught me to love, to persevere. I want to thank you mom, for everything.” Spinderella, meanwhile, noted that she was the first female DJ to join the Hall. “When I started, it was a rare thing to see a woman behind turntables,” she said. “It was literally the boy’s club. I had to carve my own lane. I had to show up. It was dedication. It was a craft. And I never missed a beat.” They went all the way back to 1985’s “My Mic Sounds Nice” at the top of their hits medley before bringing out a crew of background dancers for “Shoop” and “Let’s Talk About Sex.” En Vogue joined them for “Whatta Man,” and Kid ‘n Play made a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo during the grand finale of “Push It.” The entire performance was simply a triumph, and proof that they should have been inducted long ago. Warren Zevon is also entering the institution at an absurdly late date. David Letterman delivered a heartfelt speech in his honor that touched upon Zevon’s famous 2002 Late Show appearance, just one year before he died from cancer. “That was

Bigg Boss 19 double elimination: Abhishek Bajaj and Neelam Giri out after heated clashes and weekend allegations

Entertainment Bigg Boss 19 delivered another one of its most dramatic turns this week with the double eviction of Abhishek Bajaj and Neelam Giri. Both contestants, who have been at the centre of multiple controversies since the beginning of the season, saw their journeys cut short after an intense round of nominations and weekend scrutiny. Bigg Boss 19 double elimination: Abhishek Bajaj and Neelam Giri out after heated clashes and weekend allegations Neelam Giri’s stint inside the house was marked by frequent reprimands from host Salman Khan. The Bhojpuri actress was repeatedly cautioned for her conduct, including the episode where she was accused of body shaming fellow contestant Ashnoor Kaur. Her run also included a series of confrontations— from a heated fallout with Tanya Mittal, once considered her close ally, to a major clash with Farrhana Bhatt. Abhishek Bajaj’s journey wasn’t any less turbulent. During the recently aired Weekend Ka Vaar, Salman Khan called him out once again, this time in the presence of Ashnoor Kaur, pointing out how her presence often gets overshadowed by Bajaj. The actor has also been embroiled in controversies linked to personal allegations made by his ex-wife Akanksha, who questioned his chemistry with Ashnoor and accused him of cheating during their marriage. His time in the house further saw repeated arguments with contestants like Baseer Ali and Shehbaz Gill. Along with Abhishek and Neelam, the other names in the elimination pool this week included Gaurav Khanna, Ashnoor Kaur, and Farrhana Bhatt, who survived the round. With the eviction of two strong yet contentious personalities, the competition now tightens among the remaining contestants—Kunickaa Sadanand, Amaal Malik, Malti Chahar, Pranit More, and Mridul Tiwari along with Khanna, Bhatt, and Kaur— each gearing up for the unpredictable twists Bigg Boss is known for. The latest elimination has unquestionably reshaped the dynamics of Bigg Boss 19, setting the stage for more drama, shifting alliances, and high-octane faceoffs in the weeks ahead. Even though Anushka Sharma has appeared multiple times at the show, recently Karan Johar has revealed the reason behind his hesitation to bring on her husband on the show. According to him, the reason stems from the famous Hardik Pandya–KL Rahul controversy. In a recent podcast with Sania Mirza, Karan Johar looked back at the cricket controversy. Entertainment Karan Johar on Serving It Up With Sania In a recent episode of Serving It Up With Sania, hosted by Sania Mirza, the famous director revealed why he has never invited Virat Kohli on the show, despite him being married to the famous actress Anushka Sharma. During the conversation, Sania first asked him if there’s a celebrity who he wants to bring on the show, “who keeps refusing.” Karan answered the question with Ranbir Kapoor. He said, “He’s come before, but for the last three seasons, he’s said no.” Ranbir was last seen on the show in 2016, when he appeared along with Ranveer Singh. Entertainment Why Karan Johar hasn’t called Virat Kohli on the show Then, Sania continued, asking Johar to name a person who hasn’t ever made it to the couches of Koffee with Karan. The director paused for a while, upon which Sania reminded him of Virat. He then admitted that Virat has never appeared on the show. Karan said, “I have never asked Virat. And now, I am not asking any cricketers after what happened with Hardik (Pandya) and (KL) Rahul. There are many who I just felt wouldn’t come, so I never asked them in the first place.” Entertainment What was the KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya controversy about? For the unversed, Karan’s statement was about the time when Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul appeared on Koffee With Karan back in 2019. Some of their remarks they made ended up causing outrage, as people called them out for being misogynistic and sexist. Amid the controversy, the episode had to be pulled off Disney+ Hotstar during that time. They both were also suspended from India’s first ODI against Australia, regardless of their apologies. Karan had said that he felt somewhat responsible for what they both had to go through. Don’t Miss Out on the Latest Updates. Subscribe to Our Newsletter Today! Read More
