New Delhi: The case of fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi challenging his extradition will come up for hearing before Belgium’s supreme court the Court of Cassation on December 9, officials said on Thursday. The Court of Cassation only checks the decision of the court of appeal “on legal aspects” such as whether the court of appeal correctly applied the legal dispositions, and whether they follow the right procedure, he told PTI. “So, new facts or evidence cannot be placed,” he said. “The proceedings are, in essence, a written one. As a rule, all cases are heard. If the court refuses to admit the appeal, it will be on legal grounds, for example, the person who filed the complaint did not have the legal competence to do so,” Vanderlinden explained. He said the parties must convey their complaints in writing “on the moment” they appeal to the court. “They cannot add any other complaints after that moment. During the hearing, they can develop those complaints, but nothing else,” he said, giving details about the procedure in the Court of Cassation. On October 17, a four-member indictment chamber at the Court of Appeals in Antwerp did not find any infirmity in the orders issued by the pre-trial chamber of the district court on November 29, 2024, terming the arrest warrants issued by a Mumbai special court in May 2018 and June 2021 as “enforceable”, allowing Choksi’s extradition. The Court of Appeals had ruled that Choksi, the main accused in a Rs-13,000 crore PNB scam, faces “no risk” of being denied a fair trial or subjected to ill-treatment if he is extradited to India. Of the total scam amount, Choksi alone has siphoned off ₹6,400 crore, the Central Bureau of Investigation has alleged in its chargesheet. Choksi, who escaped to Antigua and Barbuda in January 2018, days before the scam was detected, was spotted in Belgium, where he had purportedly sought treatment. India sent an extradition request to Belgium on August 27, 2024, based on arrest warrants issued by the special court in Mumbai. The public prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Antwerp, Division Turnhout, initiated an action on November 25, 2024, seeking the enforcement of arrest warrants issued by the Mumbai court. The pre-trial chamber of the Antwerp District Court, Turnhout Division, in its order dated November 29, 2024, held that the arrest warrants against Choksi issued by the Mumbai court were enforceable, except for the order related to “causing the disappearance of evidence of the crime”. When Choksi appealed against this verdict in the Antwerp Court of Appeals, it rejected his claims that he personally faces a real, present and serious risk of being subjected to flagrant denial of justice, torture or inhuman and degrading treatment in India. India has given a number of assurances to Belgium about Choksi’s safety, the charges that he would face during trial in India, prison arrangements, human rights and medical needs. The Court of Appeals had ruled that 66-year-old Choksi faces “no risk” of being denied a fair trial or subjected to ill-treatment if he is extradited to India. Dismissing the appeal filed by Choksi against the district court, the Court of Appeals held that the businessman failed to provide “concretely plausible” evidence of a “genuine risk” of torture or denial of justice. The order was a strong validation of India’s case seeking his extradition, with Choksi having the option of appealing against the decision in Belgium’s Supreme Court, the officials said. John Rzeznik and company opened their set with Hot 100-topping single “Slide,” off 1998’s Dizzy Up the Girl, which is still a favorite. “I’m like, ‘Is Vampire Weekend behind us?’” Rzeznik quipped after the rapturous applause from the NPR staff. The group then shifted to more obscure territory with “Feel the Silence,” off an album that Rzeznik briefly had trouble remembering; it’s from 1996’s Let Love In (“If you don’t know that one, go check it out, there’s some good stuff,” Rzeznik added) with the vocalist then singing the praises of that LP’s producer Glen Ballard. “I’m a little nervous, because we could all be on a first name basis,” Rzeznik told the small crowd, adding that the Tiny Desk was even more “intimidating” than playing a festival of 100,000 people, as that crowd is further away and more anonymous. The collectible unveiled by the company is printed with a portrait of the musician as well as his signature. The perimeter of the coin’s face includes a silver-studded pattern meant to resemble the belt he wore during the 1985 Live Aid concert, which celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this year. It’s completed with a depiction of his four-octave range. The first coin honoring Mercury was struck by his sister, Kashmira Bulsara. “As Freddie died young, he didn’t get the chance of being awarded a royal medal for his talents in the music world. So to have a royal coin this way is wonderful and very fitting,” Bulsara said. “The coin perfectly captures his passion and the joy he brought to millions through his music. I think the design is very impressive and they managed to catch the most iconic pose of Freddie, which is so recognizable worldwide.” The Royal Mint shop carries multiple variations of the pressing, including a standard uncirculated coin, which is also available in color, as well as gold and silver proof versions. They range in price from £18.50 to £9,350. A special gold proof version will be donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust. The AIDS charity founded in Mercury’s memory will auction the coin at a later date. “Freddie Mercury wasn’t just a musician; he was a force of nature who transformed every stage he stepped onto,” Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, said. “This coin captures that electric energy and celebrates a truly global icon whose influence continues to inspire generations. Thornton/Getty Images Eminem is taking legal action against an Australian beach umbrella and bag company called Swim Shady.  In a petition filed with the U.S. Trademark and Copyright Office, and obtained by Rolling Stone, lawyers for Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) said the name Swim Shady is “highly confusingly similar and/or legally identical in sight and sound” to Eminem’s famous Slim Shady moniker. He’s had the nickname trademarked since the Nineties, using it for everything from merch and live performances to his record label and several albums, including his most recent, The Death of Slim Shady.  Swim Shady filed their trademark application last year, and according to online records, they received a registration certificate on Sept. 23. Eminem’s lawyers filed their petition for cancellation a few days later on Sept. 29. Along with its alleged similarities, the cancellation petition argued that the Slim Shady nickname is so well-known around the world, that the Swim Shady name “points uniquely and unmistakably” to Eminem’s marks. It further claimed that the Swim Shady mark is “likely to be confused with and mistaken for” Eminem’s marks, and could create a “false association” between the beach umbrella company and the rapper.  Lawyers for Eminem and Swim Shady did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s requests for comment. Swim Shady has 60 days to respond to Eminem’s petition.  This is far from the first time Eminem has petitioned to protect his trademarks. He previously took on a clothing company called “Shadzy,” a sunglasses brand called “Shady Character,” and recently took on Real Housewives stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon over their efforts to get a trademark for their podcast, Reasonably Shady. In an exciting new collaboration between Korean media giant CJ ENM, major Japanese television network Nippon TV, and streaming service Disney+, a new Korean-Japanese romance drama is in the works —Merry Berry Love, starring Hallyu star Ji Chang-wook and popular Japanese actress and model Imada Mio. Written by Lee Jae-yoon and directed by Kim Soo-jung, Merry Berry Love is about finding love and embracing new beginnings. The story revolves around a chance encounter between Lee Yoo-bin (Ji Chang-wook), a Korean man, and Shirahama Karin (Imada Mio), a Japanese woman. Reeling from a career setback, Yoo-bin moves to a quiet, remote island in search of a fresh start. He finds solace in the island’s tranquillity, and when his path crosses with Karin’s, something beautiful begins to unfold. Ji Chang-wook is excited to be a part of the project, and it’s no surprise why. According to a report by Ten Asia, working in Japan has been a long-time goal for the actor. He also expressed that he’s eager to work with Imada Mio. “The character setup itself was interesting,” he said, adding that he’s prepared thoroughly for the project. “I’m nervous since it’s my first time doing such work, but I’m very excited because I’ve prepared a lot.” Imada Mio shared that the language barrier may be a challenge, but she believes that “love is about wanting to know more about each other, and I think this desire to communicate beyond language is expressed in this drama.” She also revealed that being a Korean rom-com fan herself, she’s thrilled “to experience that world in real life.” Speaking about his character in the drama, Ji Chang-wook stated that Yoo-bin is in for a culture shock in Japan — literally, since he doesn’t speak a word of Japanese.
