Byeon Woo-seok and IU’s ‘Perfect Crown’: What to Expect from the Upcoming K-Drama

Entertainment Sparks fly, and a royal game gets a whole lot more intriguing as Byeon Woo-seok and IU enter a contract marriage in one of the hottest K-dramas of 2026. IU (left) and Byeon Woo-seok (right) in a still from ‘Perfect Crown.’ Photo: MBC, courtesy of Han Cinema. Byeon Woo-seok and IU‘s pairing in a romantic comedy is hint enough at the kind of storyline you can expect: a love story that’s equal parts intense and lighthearted. And Perfect Crown is looking every bit the part, with its recently released stills adding to the anticipation. The camera loves them, and it’s hard not to. Byeon Woo-seok’s effortless cool and IU’s understated strength bring out a striking chemistry, setting the stage for one of the buzziest upcoming K-dramas of 2026. Here’s a lowdown on what we’re expecting from the show. Gripping Narrative In a fictitious modern-day Korean monarchy, the grand prince is struggling to find his place. Although a royal by birth, he lacks any real power and feels stuck in limbo, craving love and, more importantly, influence. On the other hand, a chaebol heiress seems to have it all, or so it seems. In reality, she has grown increasingly suffocated by the mundanity of her life and yearns for a change. Everything changes when the two tie the knot in a contract marriage. Complex Characters Grand Prince Yi Wan, played by Byeon Woo-seok, is a melancholic prince who wants to be seen, heard, and reclaim his power in a world where he often feels neglected and sidelined. The question is whether he will find his footing amid all the palace politics. IU plays Sung Hee-joo, a privileged yet insecure character, making her a rather complicated person. Hailing from a wealthy business family, she has the riches but not the social clout that comes with old money or the noble title, which pushes her to seek it out. Byeon Woo-seok plays Prince Yi Wan in ‘Perfect Crown.’ Photo: MBC, courtesy of Han Cinema. IU plays Sung Hee-joo in ‘Perfect Crown.’ Photo: MBC, courtesy of Han Cinema. Royal Romance With their personal struggles simmering beneath the surface within and a strong desire to change their lives, Yi Wan enters a contract marriage with Hee-joo. Soon, their fake relationship begins to stir up real emotions, especially as they find themselves surrounded by the pressures and politics of royal life. Expect a slow-burning romance as the two characters navigate their new roles and feelings for each other. Power Struggles At its core, Perfect Crown is a story about power struggles. Yi Wan and Hee-joo’s marriage is a strategic move; nonetheless, it doesn’t quite work out as they thought it would. Yi Wan’s family is his greatest obstacle to the throne, while Hee-joo’s arrival in the palace triggers a chain reaction, where a commoner is tested every step of the way. The question remains: what price will they pay for power, and what will they sacrifice for love? Comic Relief As tensions rises, we hope to see moments where Yi Wan and Hee-joo let their guard down and share a laugh, a witty remark, or a playful tease that breaks up the drama’s otherwise serious plot. In essence, the series looks like a tinderbox of emotions in a slow-burning love story that starts off as a well-thought-out plan, before the lines between duty and desire get blurred. Yi Wan and Hee-joo are caught in rivalries within the palace, and it’s only a matter of time before their hearts become the battlegrounds. Will they manage to keep their feelings in check, or will their growing emotions change everything? We can’t wait to see how all of that plays out as two of Korea’s most decorated stars, Byeon Woo-seok and IU, bring this captivating romance to life. Perfect Crown, directed by Park Joon-hwa, also includes Noh Sang-hyun and Gong Seung-yeon in key roles, alongside Yoo Su-bin, Lee Yeon, and Chae Seo-an in supporting roles. The drama is co-produced by MBC and Kakao Entertainment and is expected to be released between January and June 2026. You can watch the show on Disney+. Read More

Welcome to Your New Favorite Cult Movie: ‘Sirāt’

Entertainment Spanish filmmaker Oliver Laxe’s thriller follows a man looking for his M.I.A. daughter in the desert rave scene. It’s a trip in more ways than one A scene from the movie ‘Sirāt.’ Neon It starts with hands, and bodies, and music. We’re somewhere in the middle of nowhere — more specifically, deep within the heart of the Moroccan desert. Men are stacking massive speakers on top of each other. They soon crackle and hum to life, a monumental metallic wall of sound reverberating off the base of a mountain range. Once the beat kicks in, hundreds of dust-covered dancers begin writhing together, though not in unison. Everyone here at this rave is very much on their own trip. And you, dear viewer, are about to embark on yours. Taking its name from an Arabic word referring to the bridge between heaven and hell — “narrower than a strand of hair and sharper than a sword” — Oliver Laxe’s Sirāt is both a chronicle of paradise, in the form of a D.I.Y. dance-music scene that functions as a self-sustaining misfit community, and a mural of existential misery that would make Hieronymus Bosch wince. Our Virgil-like tour guide is Luis (Pan’s Labyrinth actor Sergi López), a middle-aged father searching for his M.I.A. daughter. He thinks she might have joined these nomadic ravers as they travel from one bass-drop oasis to the next. Along with his young son, Esteban (Bruno Núñez Arjona), and their pet dog, they show pictures of the young woman to the dancers, asking if anyone has seen her around. None have. Before Luis can canvas everyone, the military shows up to kill the buzz and the event. Political instability of an unknown origin is hitting a boiling point, and it’s not safe for these folks to be out here. Trucks and vans leave in convoys. Luis decides to follow one quintet who may be headed to another party a few days away. They are Jade (Jade Oukid), Bigui (Richard Bellamy), Steff (Stefania Gadda), Tonin (Tonin Janvier), and Josh (Joshua Liam Henderson). The fact that the actors and characters share the same names isn’t coincidental; Laxe recruited these nonprofessionals from the actual desert-rave circuit he’d become intimately familiar with over the past six years. No one is playing themselves, naturally, but the ease at which they navigate this treacherous terrain and their distinct style of gutterpunk chic is 100-percent their own. Soon, the group adopt these strangers in a strange land, and all of them combine resources and forces to get to their next destination. The fact that WWIII seems to be happening just over the horizon line — news reports detail what sounds like an apocalypse already in progress — means they have to use the routes that run through the mountains, just to be on the safe side. The decision initially seems sound. It will result in the beginning of the end. Laxe is the sort of artist who prefers mood over momentum, as well as a sense of dropping audiences within an environment in ways that feel dangerously immersive; Fire Will Come (2019), his drama about a former arsonist returning home, features a blaze so intense that the writer-director has said he functioned less as a filmmaker than an actual firefighter during those sequences. It’s not just that you feel the heat in these long scenes in the desert here, so much as the sheer isolation. These travelers might be in the Sahara or on Mars. Laxe has drawn from a host of cinematic influences in addition to his first-hand knowledge of the circuit — and his use of electronic-music composer Kangding Ray’s pulsing, mesmerizing score ensures you experience a second-hand version of the dancers’ collective ecstasy — including 1970s American road movies, head movies, vintage Euro-exploitation flicks and a sci-fi dystopian-wasteland scenario or two. The actual genetic lineage of this meld of arthouse-slowburn vibes and meditative, lost-soul voyaging, however, is Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. You enter an otherworldly zone once this trance-like thriller takes a serious turn around the halfway point. And Laxe ensures you do not leave untouched. There is an extended sequence we have not stopped thinking about since seeing the movie at Cannes this past spring, in which the gang decide to pull out their own speakers during a rest stop. The music kicks in, rumbling both the sandy plains and the seats you’re sitting in. (Did we mention this score is truly, madly, deeply hypnotic?! We did? Good.) What appears to be a cathartic release for these terrestrial astronauts is brutally interrupted. Healing turns into horror. It’s the entire film in a nutshell. Anyone who found themselves without a compass at the phrase “arthouse-slowburn vibes” above has probably not just abandoned hope but already abandoned ship. Sirāt — which opened in New York this weekend, and will begin going wider starting next week — is not for everyone. But it is the sort of overwhelming cinematic experience and undeniable work of sound and vision that could be life-changing for those ready to receive it. It’s worth noting that the title of this instant cult-film classic doesn’t just refer to a bridge separating good and evil. The word also translates as “path,” with the idea that transformation awaits those who walk from one end to the next. Laxe’s movie makes good on that promise. It’s a trip in more ways than one. See Kiss Pay Tribute to Ace Frehley at Band’s First Show Since Guitarist’s Death

Entertainment “We just wanted to take a moment to think about about somebody who was at the foundation of this band,” Paul Stanley says before KISS Kruise: Landlocked In Vegas show Kiss lead guitarist Ace Frehley on January 27, 1977, at Cobo Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Ross Marino/Getty Images Kiss paid tribute to Ace Frehley before the band’s first show since the death of their former guitarist in October. Speaking before the band’s first KISS Kruise: Landlocked In Vegas on Friday, Paul Stanley addressed the crowd about the late Spaceman. “Obviously, before we get going — and we’re going to have an awesome time — we just wanted to take a moment to think about about somebody who was at the foundation of this band. And we’re talking about Ace,” Stanley said.  “We certainly had differences, but that’s what family is about. Why don’t we take a moment, little quiet, and think about him looking down on us – from [the planet] Jendell, probably – and let’s have a moment for Ace.” Following a moment of silence, the crowd outside the Virgin Hotels broke into a chant of “Ace! Ace! Ace!” while Stanley encouraged them to hold plastic candles in the air to honor the guitarist. Frehley died Oct. 16 at the age of 74 from injuries he sustained in a fall. “Our hearts are broken. Ace has passed on. No one can touch Ace’s legacy.” Simmons said in a statement at the time. “I know he loved the fans. He told me many times. Sadder still, Ace didn’t live long enough to be honored at the Kennedy Ctr Honors event in Dec. Ace was the eternal rock soldier. Long may his legacy live on!” Although Kiss’ touring reign ended with a farewell show at Madison Square Garden, the band’s final lineup — Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, guitarist Tommy Thayer, and drummer Eric Singer — announced plans to reunite without all the makeup and theatrics for the KISS Kruise: Landlocked In Vegas this November. “Here we are. No ship,” Stanley told the crowd following his Frehley tribute Friday. “Next year, what do you say we do this on a cruise again?” Kiss then opened the gig with “Comin’ Home,” co-written by Stanley and Frehley. Entertainment “I’ve been told I have to take it seriously and I can’t fuck around,” singer says Yungblud Mariano Regidor/Redferns Yungblud has canceled the remainder of his 2025 tour dates on advice from his doctors, who ordered him “to take a break from touring until the end of the year.” The singer has spent much of the year on his Idols World Tour, which continues into 2026 with another North American leg. However, Yungblud — who recently wrapped up a European run of concerts — had another handful of U.S. shows and gigs in Latin America on tap before the end of the year. “This week when I got home off the road, and went to have some tests done (like I usually do) and my voice and blood tests have raised some concerns,” Yungblud wrote on social media to fans, adding that his doctor then ordered him off the road. “It is in my nature to run and run until I run myself to the ground without giving a fuck about anything apart from the music and you guys but this time I’ve been told I have to take it seriously and I can’t fuck around,” Yungblud said. The canceled shows include November gigs Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Washington, as well as planned gigs in Mexico City and Latin America. All tickets will be refunded for those shows, Yungblud said, promising to send “a gift” to all fans impacted by the cancellations. “My heart is broken,” the singer added. “I don’t want do any lasting damage to myself, we are on a journey that I want to last forever. I understand that some of you will be frustrated. I just want you to know that this is so hard for me to do but I promise I will make it up to you.” As of now, Yungblud is set to return to his Idols Tour in January 2026 for an Australian leg, followed by a U.K. run in April 2026 and then an extensive North American tour next summer.
