Rockets Propel Gunner’s New Career | Mirage News

Sitting in the cab of a high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) on the range at Shoalwater Bay in Queensland, Gunner Zachary Clarke was buzzing with nervous energy. Six months of training had led up to him sitting in front of a fire control panel, triple-checking data and waiting for the order to fire. He didn’t have to wait long. “Seagull, this is Hardrock one-zero, verify HIMARS ready, over,” the call came over the radio. “Hardrock one-zero this is Seagull, I verify HIMARS ready, over,” the reply bounced back. “This is Hardrock one-zero, HIMARS ready. HIMARS fire, over.” Gunner Clarke armed his launchers and flicked the switch to fire. With a thunderous roar and a blast of exhaust that rocked the launcher, six rockets fired in sequence, tearing into the sky to strike targets on Townshend Island. It was the first time Gunner Clarke had fired the HIMARS, and the first time the long-range strike systems had been fired on Australian soil by Australian soldiers. “It was a bit nerve wracking to begin with, but I hit the arm switch and then the fire switch and rockets started flying. It was a weight off the shoulders once that last rocket left the tube,” Gunner Clarke said. “It almost felt like a once in a lifetime experience, but then you settle down and realise that’s my job now. I’ll get to do that all the time. It’s really exciting.” Gunner Clarke joined the Army in 2020 and was posted to 1st Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, before transferring to HIMARS in January. An expression of interest was floated last year for artillery operators to transfer to Adelaide’s 10 Brigade. There, they would raise a HIMARS battery as part of the new 14th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. The role appealed to Gunner Clarke; not just because he was originally from Adelaide, but after researching the new equipment, he was excited to be at the forefront of an emerging capability. The operators conducted their initial training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma at the Fires Centre of Excellence, undertaking the US initial employment training for HIMARS operators. Once the battery received launchers in March, it was straight onto driver training and dry-fire exercises to reach a ready-to-shoot standard before deploying on Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025. Sitting in the cab while the rockets fired was just as impressive as it looked on the outside, according to Gunner Clarke. “The boys were getting thrown left and right a bit, which is something we’ve never experienced before because we’ve only ever done dry-fire,” he said. “It was an exciting, visceral experience; the truck is moving and you can feel that you are shooting rockets, it was pretty fun.” Each system is operated by a driver, gunner and crew commander. The crew commander, a bombardier, is the tactical lead, scouting for hides and superior firing locations while assisting the driver in navigating terrain and positioning the vehicle for firing. The gunner is responsible for the fire control of the system. They receive firing data, enter it into the fire control panel, lay the launcher on target and fire the rockets. Talisman Sabre is the first exercise for the newly raised battery. After starting with a joint live-fire activity alongside United States and Singapore Army launchers, Gunner Clarke is excited to get after the fight. “We are the first, we are making history. This hasn’t been done by Australians before,” he said. “We’ve also done it in a relatively short timeframe. I don’t know of any other piece of equipment that’s been raised, delivered and fired within six months.” /Public Release. Govt Vows 50% Sewage Cut by 2030, Says Reed | Mirage News

UK Gov Sewage pollution from water companies will be cut in half by the end of the decade, the Environment Secretary Steve Reed will pledge today (Sunday 20 July). Sewage pollution from water companies will be cut in half by the end of the decade, the Environment Secretary Steve Reed will pledge today (Sunday 20 July). Our rivers, lakes and seas will be the cleanest since records began, meaning millions of families will benefit from cleaner beaches and rivers. For the first time the Government has made a pledge to cut sewage pollution with a clear target which they will be held accountable to. The Government, in partnership with investors, has secured funding to rebuild the entire water network to clean up our rivers. In one of the largest infrastructure projects in this country’s history, a record £104 billion is being invested to upgrade crumbling pipes and build new sewage treatment works cutting sewage pollution into rivers. Over the past year, the Government has introduced a package of measures to slash pollution levels. Bills are now ringfenced to force companies to invest in upgrades and over £100 million of water fines are being spent on local clean-up projects. The commitment comes as the Government vows “root and branch reform” to usher in a revolution in the water industry, ahead of the Independent Water Commission’s final report. Environment Secretary Steve Reed said: Families have watched their local rivers, coastlines and lakes suffer from record levels of pollution. My pledge to you: the Government will halve sewage pollution from water companies by the end of the decade. One of the largest infrastructure projects in England’s history will clean up our rivers, lakes and seas for good.” The Government has already taken decisive action to clean up England’s waterways. Record investment: with £104 billion to upgrade crumbling pipes and build sewage treatment works across the country. Ringfence customers’ bills for upgrades: customer bills earmarked for investment must now be spent on new sewage pipes and treatment works – not spent on shareholder payments or bonuses . Reinvesting company fines into local projects: with over £100million being invested into local clean-up projects in communities. Largest budget for water regulation: the Environment Agency received a record £189 million to fund hundreds of enforcement officers to inspect and prosecute polluting water companies. Polluter Pays: companies will now cover the cost of prosecutions and successful investigations into pollution incidents, enabling the regulator to hire more staff and pursue further enforcement activity. Banning wet wipes containing plastic in England: introducing legislation to reduce microplastics in our waters. The Water (Special Measures) Act: banned unfair bonuses for ten polluting water bosses this year and threatened prison sentences for law-breaking executives. This package of measures will slash storm overflow spills by 50% by 2030 and halve phosphorus from treated wastewater by 2028. Both contaminants choke our rivers, suffocate wildlife and destroy ecosystems. In 2024, sewage spilled into waterways for a record 3,614,428 hours . Pollution levels were a decisive factor in the Government launching the Independent Water Commission last October – the largest review of the sector since privatisation. Led by Sir Jon Cunliffe, the Commission’s final report will be published on Monday with recommendations on regulation, strategic frameworks and support for consumers. The Government will respond to the recommendations in Parliament on Monday. /Public Release. Free TAFE Completions Surge Past 170,000 | Mirage News

Australians are making the most of the opportunity to gain new qualifications and skills through the Albanese Government’s Free TAFE program, with new data revealing more than 170,000 Free TAFE courses have now been completed. Free TAFE is removing financial barriers for students undertaking vocational education and training (VET) courses, saving Australians thousands of dollars and helping to set them up for new careers with secure, well-paid work. Data from states and territories shows that from the commencement of Free TAFE in January 2023 and March this year there were more than 170,000 courses completed. It also finds that there have been more than 650,000 Free TAFE enrolments in the same period, demonstrating significant interest from Australians in the program. The Albanese Government’s Free TAFE policy focuses on priority areas agreed between the Government and states and territories to help in addressing skills shortages. Priority areas include construction, health and aged care, manufacturing and technology and digital. The Albanese Government last year legislated permanent Free TAFE to ensure Australians can continue to access courses without the cost barriers. The legislation locks in 100,000 Free TAFE places each year, from 2027. Quotes attributable to Minister for Skills and Training, Andrew Giles: “Every day, more Australians are enrolling in Free TAFE courses – and every day, more Australians are completing much-needed qualifications. “Free TAFE is changing people’s lives. It’s opening doors to new careers and giving Australians the chance to find secure, well-paid work that they’re passionate about. “This latest data confirms what I’ve been hearing on the ground from students right around the country. Australians want to take up the opportunities to work in industries like construction, nursing and manufacturing, without the cost barriers they’ve faced previously. “We know how Sussan Ley and the Liberals and Nationals feel about Free TAFE – they call it ‘wasteful spending’ and say that people don’t value it because it’s free. Australians are proving them wrong. “The Liberals and Nationals ripped $3 billion out of TAFE and training when they were in office; the Albanese Government is investing in the skills and training Australians want and need for their future.” /Public Release. Military Muscle Joins Medical Might | Mirage News

They spend their time treating the sick and injured in cities and towns. Now these doctors and nurses are on the frontlines of Australia’s biggest military exercise. Between July 13 and August 4, Adelaide-based reservists from 3rd Health Battalion will pull on their uniform for Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025. It’s the first time the unit has fielded an all-reservist treatment team to run a Role 1 hospital, a facility out in the battlefield where patients receive life-saving care. In the Northern Territory’s Bradshaw Field Training Area, military muscle is side-by-side with medical might. The battalion’s treatment team are some of the best South Australia has to offer. The senior clinician of the team is medical officer Major Aloysius Achusiogu, a Nigerian-born humanitarian who splits his time between urban and rural healthcare. When he’s not working at his East Glenelg clinic, the rural generalist tours outback Queensland. Service is a guiding value for the doctor, who also runs an NGO helping vulnerable Nigerians in Africa. “The impact you have on other people is what you’re remembered for,” Major Achusiogu said. Across the table is nursing officer Lieutenant Martina Sydenham. Dealing with life and death situations are all in a day’s work for the reservist of eight years. The nursing officer works in the Royal Adelaide Hospital emergency department, one of largest trauma centres in Australia. It turns out the Adelaide medical community is tight-knit. “A lot of us know each other on civvy street,” Lieutenant Sydenham said. “We have intensive-care paramedics on the treatment team who I see all the time at my day job. “We often get really senior people that come into these reserve roles and have a lot of experience, which is really helpful,” she said. For Lieutenant Sydenham, opportunities to see the road less travelled motivated her to join Army. Others found they could offer more as reservists (SERCAT 5). Corporal Scott Wakefield transitioned from full time service to pursue a career as a South Australian ambulance paramedic after ten years as a medical technician. He said a career in the reserves was more rewarding than discharging from service. “I still enjoyed the role and the mateship of Army, and felt I could give something back to the junior medics coming through the ranks,” Corporal Wakefield said. “As a reservist, you get to keep the mates, you keep the skills, and you get to do some cool stuff too,” he said. Half of 3 HB personnel are reservists from South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. On Talisman Sabre 2025, 3 Platoon Treatment Team provides point-of-injury health care for combat casualties, medic support during evacuation and medical officer-led resuscitation at the Bradshaw Camp. /Public Release. Youth Mobilize for Severe Weather Response | Mirage News

An immediate one-off grant to mobilise and coordinate young people to assist in the response to the severe Nelson Tasman weather events has been provided to the Student Volunteer Army (SVA), Youth Minister James Meager has announced. Mr Meager confirmed the $50,000 funding to support youth volunteers aged between 12 and 24, while speaking in Foxhill today. “The Student Volunteer Army has a strong track record of rallying the troops at speed to respond to urgent need and has vast experience in crisis response and disaster recovery. I know the work its volunteers will undertake will be of enormous community benefit,” Mr Meager says. “Young people are ready and willing to get involved and support communities badly affected by recent flooding events. This region has been hit hard twice in the past fortnight, and these volunteers will offer valuable assistance while taking part in a youth development opportunity.” The SVA grant will finance region-wide activities over the next four-to-six weeks. These will be identified from a register of help being sought by individuals, families, and/or communities impacted by severe flooding. “Involving students and young people in disaster response and recovery is always a good idea. They’re fit, energetic and like to help. It also provides them the opportunity to learn first-hand about the complex issues extreme weather present,” SVA Founder Sam Johnson says. The organisation will incorporate the knowledge and expertise of local community leaders to coordinate, support, and lead volunteer opportunities that young people can safely and appropriately participate in. “The youth volunteers that participate will be appropriately supervised and have access to mentoring and guidance to support their learning and development while doing this voluntary work. This represents a great opportunity to grow skills and resilience, while giving back to communities in need,” Mr Meager says. “The Student Volunteer Army has already provided assistance to 50 properties so far, with many more in need of a helping hand. We welcome anyone who’d like to volunteer – particularly family groups and retirees,” Mr Johnson says. “I want to thank those who have helped enormously with the region’s recovery efforts so far. I encourage all young people who have seen the devastation and want to help to reach out to the organisation.” /Public Release. 73 People Killed Waiting For Humanitarian Aid Across Gaza, Palestinian Health Ministry Says

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — At least 73 people were killed while attempting to access aid at locations across Gaza on Sunday, the health ministry in the Palestinian territory said. The Israeli military said that soldiers had shot at a gathering of thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza who posed a threat, and that it was aware of some casualties. But it said that the numbers being reported by teams in Gaza were far higher than the military’s initial investigation found. The military added that it is attempting to facilitate the entry of aid, and blamed Hamas militants for fomenting chaos and endangering civilians. The largest toll, according to the Gaza ministry, was in the northern part of the territory, where at least 67 Palestinians were killed while trying to reach aid entering northern Gaza through the Zikim crossing with Israel, according to the ministry and local hospitals. More than 150 people were wounded, with some of them in critical condition, hospitals said. Seven Palestinians were also killed while sheltering in tents in Khan Younis, including a 5-year-old boy, according to the Kuwait Specialized Field Hospital, which received the casualties. It wasn’t immediately clear whether they were killed by the Israeli army or armed gangs or both. But some witnesses said that the Israeli military shot at the crowd. The killings in northern Gaza didn’t take place near aid distribution points associated with the Gaza Humanitarian Fund, or GHF, a U.S.- and Israel-backed group that hands out food packages to Palestinians. Witnesses and health workers say hundreds of people have been killed by Israeli fire while trying to access the group’s distribution sites. Meanwhile, the Israeli military published new evacuation warnings for areas of central Gaza on Sunday, in one of the few areas where the military has rarely operated with ground troops. The evacuation cuts access between the city of Deir al-Balah and the southern cities of Rafah and Khan Younis in the narrow enclave. The announcement came as Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar, but international mediators say there have been no breakthroughs. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stressed that expanding Israel’s military operations in Gaza will pressure Hamas to negotiate, but negotiations have been stalled for months. Earlier this month, the Israeli military said that it controlled more than 65% of the Gaza Strip. Cutting off access The area of Gaza under the evacuation order is where many international organizations attempting to distribute aid are located. The United Nations has been in contact with Israeli authorities to clarify whether U.N. facilities in southwestern Deir al-Balah are included in Sunday’s evacuation order, according to a U.N. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media. The official said that in previous instances, U.N. facilities were spared from evacuation orders. The evacuation announcement covers an area stretching from a previously evacuated area all the way to the coast and will severely hamper movement for aid groups and civilians in Gaza. Military spokesman Avichay Adraee warned that the military will attack “with intensity” against militants. He called for residents, including those sheltering in tents, to head to the Muwasi area, a desolate tent camp on Gaza’s southern shore that the Israeli military has designated a humanitarian zone. Gaza’s population of more than 2 million Palestinians are in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Hamas triggered the 21-month war when militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage. Fifty remain, but fewer than half are thought to be alive. Israel’s military offensive that followed has killed more than 58,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which doesn’t say how many militants are among the dead but says more than half of the dead have been women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas government but the U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties. The Hostages Family Forum, a grassroots organization that represents many of the families of hostages, condemned the evacuation announcement and demanded that Netanyahu and the Israeli military explain what they hope to accomplish in the area of central Gaza, accusing Israel of operating without a clear war plan. “Enough! The Israeli people overwhelmingly want an end to the fighting and a comprehensive agreement that will return all of the hostages,” the forum said. On Saturday night, during the weekly protest, tens of thousands of protesters marched in Tel Aviv to the branch of the U.S. Embassy, demonstrating for an end to the war. Humanitarian disaster grows On Sunday morning, ambulances in front of three major hospitals in Gaza sounded their alarms simultaneously in an urgent appeal to shed light on the hunger crisis in the territory. The health ministry posted pictures on social media of doctors holding paper signs about malnourished children and lack of medication. Zaher al-Wahidi, one of the spokespeople at the health ministry, said that at least nine children under 5 years old have died of malnutrition as of Sunday since the Israel’s imposed aid entry blockade in March. He explained that tracking the number of people dying of starvation is hard because some could be suffering from other medical conditions that could be worsened when compounded with severe hunger. In northern Gaza, Shifa Hospital director Abu Selmiyah said that the hospital recorded 79 people who died of malnutrition in the past month. Israeli bombardments continued to pound the Gaza Strip overnight. Large explosions in northern Gaza were visible from Israel as plumes of fire shot into the sky. ___ 20 Years OfFreeJournalism Your Support Fuels Our Mission Your Support Fuels Our Mission For two decades, HuffPost has been fearless, unflinching, and relentless in pursuit of the truth. Tourist Boat Capsizes During Thunderstorm In Vietnam, Leaving 34 Dead

HA LONG BAY, Vietnam (AP) — A boat carrying tourists capsized during a sudden thunderstorm in Vietnam on Saturday afternoon during a sightseeing excursion, killing 34 people, state media reported. Eight others remain missing. The Wonder Sea boat was carrying 48 passengers and five crew members — all of them Vietnamese — during the tour of Ha Long Bay, a popular destination for visitors, according to the reports. Rescue workers saved 11 people, and recovered the dead near the site of the capsizing, VNExpress newspaper said. Authorities had earlier reported that 12 people had been rescued, but later revised the figure to 11. The boat turned upside down because of strong winds, the newspaper said. A 14-year-old boy was among the survivors, and he was rescued four hours after being trapped in the overturned hull. The newspaper said that most of the passengers were tourists, including about 20 children, from Hanoi, the country’s capital. A tropical storm is also moving toward the area. A national weather forecast said that Storm Wipha is expected to hit Vietnam’s northern region, including Ha Long Bay’s coast next week.
