Coca-Cola confirms new Trump-approved cane sugar variant

Coca-Cola confirmed that it will release a new Coke made with cane sugar. The announcement follows a social media post from President Donald Trump last week in which he claimed he persuaded the company to replace high-fructose corn syrup. The company revealed in its earnings report Tuesday that as “part of its ongoing innovation agenda,” it will launch in coming months an “offering made with US cane sugar” as part of its product range. Some versions of Coke already use cane sugar, including Coca-Cola sold in Mexico. “This addition is designed to complement the company’s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences,” Coca-Cola said in a statement. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today CEO James Quincey said on a call with analysts that he thinks the drink “will be an enduring option for consumers” and noted that Coca-Cola uses cane sugar in several other of its beverages sold in the US, including lemonade and coffee. Cane sugar is “blended into some of our other products, and so we are definitely looking to use the whole toolkit of available sweetening options where there are consumer preferences,” he said. Last week, Trump said that Coca-Cola had “agreed” to use cane sugar in its colas. But Tuesday’s announcement reveals that Coke’s flagship recipe isn’t changing and will continue to use high-fructose corn syrup. Instead, the company will create a separate Coke product that includes cane sugar. American-made Coca-Cola is made with high-fructose corn syrup, an ingredient that Trump’s Health and Human Services secretary, Robert F. Kennedy jnr, has aggressively advocated against. Donald Trump last week said Coca-Cola had agreed to revert to cane sugar. Credit: AAP/Twitter Kennedy, who has led the charge to remove many artificial and highly processed ingredients from American foods, has called high-fructose corn syrup a “formula for making you obese and diabetic” in a September episode of Jordan Peterson’s podcast. Corn syrup is a common and cheap sweetener, which is why Coca-Cola made the switch many years ago. But sugar-filled soda isn’t heathy, health experts say — whether it is made with cane sugar or corn syrup. “Excess consumption of sugar from any source harms health,” Eva Greenthal, senior policy scientist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group, previously told CNN. “To make the US food supply healthier, the Trump administration should focus on less sugar, not different sugar.” Meanwhile, rival PepsiCo isn’t making any major changes. However, its newly announced prebiotic soda contains cane sugar as does its recently acquired Poppi brand. “Sugar is more expensive in the US than in many parts of the world, so I think there is a conversation with the government probably on how do we make sugar more affordable in the US, how do we have a farming strategy probably that reduces the cost of sugar and that will facilitate a lot of the transition for us and for the whole industry,” PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta said on CNBC last week. US Justice Department asks Ghislaine Maxwell to speak to prosecutors

The US Justice Department has asked lawyers for Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell if she would be willing to speak with prosecutors, and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche says he expects to meet with her in the coming days. The decision to request a meeting with Maxwell comes as Attorney General Pam Bondi has faced mounting pressure from US President Donald Trump’s supporters to release additional materials related to Epstein, who died in a jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. “President Trump has told us to release all credible evidence,” Blanche said in a statement posted on X. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today He added that if Maxwell “has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and the DOJ will hear what she has to say”. Blanche said he has been in touch with Maxwell’s lawyers to see if she is willing to speak with prosecutors. “I anticipate meeting with Ms Maxwell in the coming days,” he added. David Oscar Markus, a lawyer for Maxwell, acknowledged the contact. “I can confirm that we are in discussions with the government and that Ghislaine will always testify truthfully. We are grateful to President Trump for his commitment to uncovering the truth in this case. We have no other comment at this time,” Markus said. A lawyer for Ghislaine Maxwell has confirmed there are discussions with the US government. Credit: AAP Some of Trump’s most staunch supporters in recent weeks have called on Bondi to resign after she backtracked on a promise she made earlier this year that the department would release additional materials including “a lot of names” and “a lot of flight logs” in connection with Epstein’s clients. After releasing only a select number of records that failed to shed new light on the case, the department and the FBI released a joint memo earlier this month that poured cold water on long-running conspiracy theories about Epstein by saying there was “no incriminating client list” or any evidence of blackmail. Since then, at Trump’s direction, Bondi and Blanche have asked a federal court for permission to unseal grand jury transcripts in the cases of both Epstein and Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 of five federal charges related to her role in Epstein’s alleged sexual abuse of underage girls. However, legal experts including one of Epstein’s former lawyers, Alan Dershowitz, have said that those transcripts will not likely contain the types of materials being sought by Trump’s supporters. A judge could also deny the request. In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Dershowitz called on the Justice Department to release other materials such as FBI reports of interviews with Epstein’s victims. He also urged the government to grant Maxwell immunity so that she could potentially testify before Congress about Epstein’s crimes. Read More

Student fury in Bangladesh amid protests after deadly jet crash

Police have used tear gas to disperse angry students in Bangladesh who demanded answers from the interim government after an air force fighter jet crashed into a Dhaka school and killed 31 people, at least 25 of them children. The children, many aged under 12, were about to return home from class on Monday when the Chinese-manufactured F-7 BGI Bangladesh Air Force jet ploughed into their school and burst into flames, trapping pupils in the fire and debris. The military said it had suffered mechanical failure. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Students from the school and others from nearby colleges protested as two government officials visited the crash site, demanding an accurate death toll and shouting, “Why did our brothers die? We demand answers!”. Elsewhere in the capital, hundreds of protesting students, some of them waving sticks, broke through the main gate of the federal government secretariat and demanded the resignation of the education adviser, according to local TV footage. Police baton charged them, fired tear gas and used sound grenades to disperse the crowd, leaving dozens injured, witnesses said. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman said they had to use tear gas to disperse the protesters. He said he did not have information on the number of injured. Rescue workers continued to scour the charred buildings for debris on Tuesday as distressed residents of the area looked on. Police in Dhaka have clashed with protesters demanding answers about an air force jet crash. Credit: AAP Some parents were inconsolable. Abul Hossain broke down as he spoke about his nine-year-old daughter, Nusrat Jahan Anika, killed in the crash. “I took her to school yesterday morning like every day. I had no idea it would be the last time I would be seeing her,” he said. She was buried on Monday night. Rubina Akter said her son Raiyan Toufiq had a miraculous escape after his shirt caught fire when he was on a staircase. “He sprinted to the ground floor and jumped on the grass to douse it,” she said. “He tore his shirt and vest inside, which saved him from severe burns.” The jet had taken off from a nearby air base on a routine training mission, the military said. After experiencing mechanical failure the pilot tried to divert the aircraft away from populated areas but it crashed into the campus. The pilot was among those killed. On Tuesday, the military said in a statement that 31 people had died and 165 had been admitted to hospitals in the city. The health ministry said 68 remained in hospital and 10 of them remained in critical conditions. The government announced a day of mourning, with flags at half-mast and special prayers at all places of worship. Pope Leo said he was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life in the crash and prayed that families and friends may be consoled in their grief, and for the healing and comfort of the injured, according to a Vatican statement. The protesting students called for those killed and injured to be named, the decommissioning of what they said were old and risky jets and a change in air force training procedures. A statement from the press office of Muhammad Yunus, the country’s interim administrator, said that the government, the military, school and hospital authorities were working together to publish a list of victims. It also said the air force will be told not to operate training aircraft in populated areas. The F-7 BGI is the final and most advanced variant of the Chinese Chengdu J-7/F-7 aircraft family, according to Jane’s Information Group. Bangladesh signed a contract for 16 aircraft in 2011 and deliveries were completed by 2013. The Chengdu F-7 is the licence-built version of the Soviet era MiG-21. Read More

Powerhouse sports company Nike warns AFL players about illegal studs

A powerhouse sportswear brand has sent a memo to AFL players in the aftermath of the league’s crackdown on illegal studs. It was revealed on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters in June that the AFL had sent a serious warning to players about wearing metal studs or stops. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Nike warns AFL players about metal studs. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today In that warning, the league reminded players they were liable to a $40,000 sanction should they be caught in metal or illegal stops. Not long after in July, Adelaide was slapped with a $7500 fine after Ben Keays and Josh Rachele repeatedly ignored the league’s warnings. Along with the club financial sanction, Keays copped a $5000 fine, while Rachele’s sanction was $2500. Now Nike has made it clear that the players are totally responsible for their own footwear, and has also issued a statement “Please note: When ordering Nike SC plated (metal stop) boots, a player acknowledges that they are selecting a model equipped with screw-in metal studs,” the statement said. “If the player intends to wear these boots in an AFL match, the metal studs must be replaced with compliant plastic studs.” Questions are still being asked of the AFL, however. “We broke the story about the AFL warning (to players),” veteran AFL journalist Caroline Wilson said on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters on Tuesday night. “What has happened in my absence, is the AFL have finally admitted that the biggest club at fault was Adelaide. Ben Keays was fined $5000. He ignored four warnings. He wore metal-studded boots for five weeks. “They said (fines were) up to $40,000 …. Josh Rachele, he was fined two-and-a-half grand. He only wore them two more times. “And Nike, we’ve now found, has sent a memo to all of their players, warning them (about the boots) and absolutely taking away any responsibility from themselves, and saying, ‘If you buy our boots, you better make sure you remove the metal studs’.” Wilson also wondered why GWS captain Toby Greene wasn’t fined for wearing the illegal footwear. Greene actually admitted to wearing metal studs while he was on air as a guest commentator during a Channel 7 game. “Why was Toby Greene not fined after admitting, as we found out, that he had worn boots with metal studs?” Wilson said on The Agenda Setters. Stream The Agenda Setters for free, live or on-demand, anytime at 7plus “The AFL said, look, he only did it once. He was given the rounds of the kitchen by Jason McCartney, his head of footy. “But hopefully boot-gate is well and truly over.” Read More

Gout Gout intends to run for gold at Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout has confirmed his intention to run for gold at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Scotland. The major competition will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2 next year and be broadcast exclusively live and free on Seven and 7plus Sport. Gout has taken the sprinting world by storm with his freakish talents, and next year’s Games will be the biggest event of his budding career. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today It’s unclear which event the 17-year-old is planning to run, but he is expected to compete before going to the World Junior Championships in Oregon. “We need to wait for the full Commonwealth Games program to be released but yes, we are planning that Gout will be available to run at an event in Glasgow before going on to the World Juniors in Eugene,” Gout’s manager, James Templeton, said. Gout’s intention to run opens up the prospect of another showdown with Aussie rival and close friend Lachie Kennedy. Kennedy and Gout could square off in Glasgow. Credit: AAP Legendary sports broadcaster and Seven’s voice of the Commonwealth Games Bruce McAvaney is “excited” to see Gout in action on the world stage. “Gout Gout is arguably the sporting story of a generation. And the prospect of him lining up in Glasgow next year, taking on the best sprinters from the Caribbean, South Africa, Canada and Britain, is just so exciting,” he said. Next year’s Commonwealth Games will feature a 10-sport program and approximately 3000 world-class athletes from 74 nations. The 2026 Games will include athletics and para athletics (track and field), swimming and para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and para bowls, and 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball. Australia will send a star-studded list of athletes gunning for gold. “There’s never been a more exciting time in Australian Athletics. There have been 37 Australian records set this year by our team competing both at home and internationally,” McAvaney said. Aussie Olympian and co-host of Seven’s Sunrise Matt Shirvington said the Commonwealth Games is such an important stepping stone for athletes. “It’s a chance to test themselves on the international stage, to show us what they’re made of and for all of us to get behind them,” he said. “We’ve got an incredible depth of young talent across so many sports, and it’ll be a buzz to watch them shine in Glasgow. Athletics has always been close to my heart, and with a golden era emerging, it’s even more exciting to see Gout Gout, Nina Kennedy, Lachie Kennedy, Peter Bol, Jess Hull and so many more lighting up the track. “It’s athletes like Gout who will make this Commonwealth Games compulsive viewing – and I can’t wait to help share those unforgettable moments and stories with Sunrise viewers.” Commonwealth Games discus champion and Olympic silver medallist Matt Denny is looking forward to defending his title. “People often ask me when the next Comm Games are before they ask about the Olympics or World Champs,” he said. “I feel like there’s a strong standing there for Australians because we love to beat the Pommies, but it’s a really good standard across the board.” Para sprinter Rhiannon Clarke has a silver and bronze medal to her name, and is aiming to complete the set in Glasgow. “The Commonwealth Games will always be special to me since it was my first Australian team back in 2018,” she said. “It’s amazing to see both the T38 100m and 200m on the program this time and I’m aiming to add to my medal collection and hopefully complete the set.” Bowls silver medallist Carl Healey is excited for a new challenge indoors. “As always it’s a hectic time with selections in the not too distant future but it is extremely exciting to be a part of it, he said. “An indoor Commonwealth Games for bowls is (as far as I know) a first for the sport, and could see the future of our great sport flourish with these opportunities. As Australians, we love a challenge and this will be our biggest one yet.” Star gymnast and defending champion Kate McDonald is already counting down. “It’s hard to believe we’re just a year out from Glasgow 2026. Representing Australia on the global stage is always a huge honour,” she said. “The countdown is officially on and the excitement is building. I know the whole team will be doing everything they can over the next 12 months to be ready to put our best foot forward and make Australia proud.” Read More
