Respected trainer Chris Waller hits out at Racing NSW over wet Randwick track: ‘Not a roulette wheel’

Respected trainer Chris Waller has slammed Racing NSW just hours out from Saturday’s highly anticipated Winx Stakes at Royal Randwick. Waller has already pulled out the highly rated Fangirl from the Group 1, and there are now fears his superstar mare Via Sistina might also be a late scratching due to the Heavy 10 track. “I’ll start with a whinge, I don’t they should be racing today,” Waller said on Sky Racing’s Racing HQ on Saturday morning. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today “It’s too wet. “Racing’s not a roulette wheel but that’s how we seem to be treating racing at the moment. “But we’ve got such great prize money and it’s got to come from somewhere and that is wagering, and unfortunately the betting turnover drops off Sundays and Mondays, so apparently it would have been unfinancial to run on those days. “It’s a shame to have to send those horses out (today). Whinge over.” Star mare Via Sistina could be a late scratching in the Group 1 Winx Stakes. Credit: Getty As for Via Sistina, Waller said he was yet to make the call. “She’s going to be vulnerable, isn’t she? “We will be walking the track before her race to make sure it hasn’t chopped up too much. “She’s not going to be as good on a heavy track but hopefully she’s good enough to be fighting out the finish.” Via Sistina’s stablemate Aeliana is also running in the Winx Stakes, and so are the Waller-trained Lindermann and former American mare Full Count Felicia. Waller also has superstar jockey James McDonald riding hot favourite Autumn Glow in the Group 3 race prior to the Winx Stakes. But he said the industry needed a rethink and the tracks needed a spell when they had been soaked by rain. “As an industry, we can’t just make decisions when we’re emotional or on days like this,” Waller said. “We’ve got to say is, Look, last month what were we doing racing on Randwick? What were we doing racing on Rosehill? “We’ve got all these big horses and big races coming back so we’ve got to respect the tracks. “They just don’t grow through the winter months and curators can only do so much.” Read More

Explosive details emerge on AFL star Izak Rankine’s alleged past behaviour with Collingwood players

Collingwood players felt compelled to escalate Izak Rankine’s homophobic slur internally following Saturday’s night match in part due to an alleged incident several years ago. It’s understood multiple Magpies players are of the belief that Rankine delivered a similar slur towards an opponent in a previous match against Collingwood. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Crows write to AFL in bid to free Rankine. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Rankine was warned at the time and put on notice by the opposing player, however, the matter wasn’t raised to club officials. Conversations between officials at the Magpies and Crows ramped up on Sunday afternoon before the AFL was informed and the league’s integrity unit commenced its inquiries. The investigation into Rankine’s homophobic slur from Saturday will enter its fourth day on Wednesday and is being treated in isolation. Collingwood players felt compelled to escalate the Rankine matter due to an alleged incident several years ago.  Credit: Getty Parties close to the situation believe Rankine is facing a ban of five matches. Rankine has apologised to the Collingwood player he directed Saturday night’s slur towards and admitted his guilt. However, the Crows are attempting to have the ban minimised in order for the star midfielder to be able to play again in 2025. Adelaide entered a written submission to the AFL on Monday night highlighting extenuating circumstances that should have the ban reduced, including a verbal exchange with Collingwood defender Dan Houston. It’s understood Houston is not the player Rankine delivered the slur towards on Saturday night. A five-match ban would rule Rankine out for the season. A four-match ban would allow him to play in the grand final should the Crows lose the qualifying final and still progress. Read More

Ireland’s Export-led Economy Looks Robust Enough to Withstand Higher US Trade Tariffs for Now

Scope expects the general government budget to remain in surplus, running this year at around 2.6% of GNI* (a measure of the size of the Irish economy excluding distortions related to the activities of MNEs) and around 2.3% on average between 2026-30. Notably, without excess corporate tax revenues, the general government budget would be in deficit by around 1% to 2% of GNI*. While dependence on MNEs remains a key economic vulnerability – just 10 companies pay 57% of all corporation taxes and just three account for 40% – robust corporate-tax income and economic growth underpin the favourable trajectory of government debt. General government debt-to-GNI* is likely to decline to 63% in 2025 and to less than 50% by 2030 from 68% in 2024, with general government debt-to-GDP falling to 30% from around 40% over the period (Figure 1). Growing Strategic Reserves to Help Ireland Meet Welfare and Infrastructure Challenges The government’s strategic approach to windfall revenues strengthens the fiscal outlook through the two sovereign funds established in 2024. Although transfers only account for a relatively modest portion of windfall corporate tax receipts, sovereign funds provide a buffer for addressing the pressing structural challenges facing the economy. Assuming the government transfers around 0.8% of GDP a year to the Future Ireland Fund through 2040, the Fund could grow to around EUR 100bn, allowing future governments to draw down investment returns from 2041 onwards to tackle the health and welfare costs associated with an ageing population. The government is also accumulating resources for the modernisation of infrastructure and to address climate change with EUR 2bn of annual flows to the Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund from 2025-2030. Scope’s assessment of Ireland’s favourable refinancing profile further supports the fiscal outlook, with less than 40% of outstanding Treasury debt maturing within five years and a weighted average Treasury debt maturity exceeding 10 years. The National Treasury Management Agency’s cash balance of EUR 30bn (around 5% of GDP) provides further substantial financing flexibility. Supply-side Constraints, Public Investment Needs Are Challenges Eliminating supply-side bottlenecks remains a significant policy challenge, with the economy operating at capacity while facing labour and skills shortages. The government’s updated National Development Plan includes EUR 102.4bn in capital investments between 2026 and 2030, with overall investments of EUR 275.4bn by 2035, but execution risks remain elevated given the tight labour market and lengthy processes. Addressing these supply-side constraints through labour-market reforms will be crucial for the economy to absorb the ambitious infrastructure spending on housing, water, energy and transport. Over time, implementation of the National Development Plan could enhance the growth model and support competitiveness, while mitigating the economy’s exposures to global shocks as a small, open and financially inter-connected economy.

Source : Gran Turismo Read More
