OHOB wins enabling works for £150m Medway regen scheme

The 32-month programme, running from September 2025 to April 2028, covers phases 1B to 5 of the brownfield site’s preparation for full development. The Gravesend-based contractor will undertake extensive land-raising and groundworks, including drainage, service installation and the removal of obstructions, to get the former Civic Centre plot ready for the 195-home scheme. Site of a former civic centre on the banks of the River Medway in Kent The redevelopment, led by council-owned Medway Development Company, was approved last December and will transform the prime riverfront site with a mix of flats and houses, 25% of which will be affordable. Plans also include a commercial space, public gardens and a new riverside walkway. Flood defence works to protect the site have already been completed under earlier Local Growth Fund-backed phases. The enabling works contract marks the next big step towards construction starting on the main build. Read More

HS2 mega bridge span to showcase heavy-lift innovation

The 1,631-tonne giant steel span forms part of a one-mile stretch of five connected viaducts and has been assembled over the past two years beside Digbeth Canal to minimise disruption for road users during fabrication. From 15 August, heavy-lift specialists Mammoet will jack the bridge onto two self-propelled modular transporters before rotating it 90 degrees. The following week, the span will be inched into position at night using a rare combination of SPMTs and a push-pull skidding system – a first for BBV on the HS2 project. The operation will see the bridge moved around 12 metres each night, keeping Lawley Middleway open during the day. Night-time closures between Garrison Circus and Curzon Circus will run from 10pm to 6am until 24 August, with a signed diversion avoiding Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone. BBV project manager Georgios Markakis said: “This operation is a first for BBV, combining SPMTs and a skidding system to lift, rotate and move this giant structure into place.” The bridge is one of five viaducts bringing high-speed trains from the west portal of the 3.5-mile Bromford Tunnel into Curzon Street Station. Over the next 12 months, the Curzon Approaches will see tunnel breakthroughs, more viaduct moves, road reopenings and the start of Saltley Viaduct construction. Read More

Danny Sullivan HS2 workers hit-out over agency moves

Balfour Beatty terminated all labour supply agreements with the Danny Sullivan Group last month after a number of individuals were erroneously engaged as Construction Industry Scheme workers rather than as permanent full-time employees on HS2. The decision meant around 450 Danny Sullivan workers are currently being transferred over to other labour agencies on Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) HS2 sites across the West Midlands. But the workers are unhappy about being given no choice of which of the five remaining labour agencies they can join under TUPE rules. One said: “We feel we are being treated as commodities rather than workers with rights. “We are being assigned to these companies without consultation or choice.” Many of the workers would rather resign from Danny Sullivan Group and join another labour supplier of their choice. But the Enquirer understands that if they choose that option they will not be able to work on the site for six weeks. Another worker said: “People are being strong-armed and given little option.” A source close to the project said: “The transfer of workers is being done under TUPE rules which have to be followed and that can mean not everyone is happy about the outcome.” Read More

Pennsylvania: Explosion at US steel plant with history of pollution concerns kills 2, injures 10

An explosion at a US Steel plant near Pittsburgh left two dead and sent at least 10 to hospitals Monday and heavily damaged the sprawling facility, officials said. One worker was pulled from the wreckage hours after the explosion sent black smoke spiraling into the midday sky in the Mon Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel for more than a century. Allegheny County Emergency Services said a fire at the plant started around 10.51 am. Authorities later said a second person had died. The explosion, followed by several smaller blasts, could be felt in the nearby community and prompted county officials to warn residents to stay away from the scene so emergency workers could respond. “It felt like thunder,” Zachary Buday, a construction worker near the scene, told WTAE-TV. “Shook the scaffold, shook my chest, and shook the building, and then when we saw the dark smoke coming up from the steel mill and put two and two together, and it’s like something bad happened.” Cause under investigation At a news conference, Scott Buckiso, U.S. Steel’s chief manufacturing officer, did not give details about the damage or casualties, and said they were still trying to determine what happened. U.S. Steel employees “did a great job” of going in and rescuing workers, shutting down gases and making sure the site was stable. Buckiso said the company, now a subsidiary of Japan-based Nippon Steel Corp., is working with authorities. US Steel CEO David B. Burritt said the company would thoroughly investigate the cause. “I end every meeting and every message with the words, Let’s get back to work safely.’ That commitment has never been more important, and we will honour it,” he said in a statement. Allegheny Health Network said it treated seven patients from the plant, and discharged five within a few hours. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said it is treating three patients at UPMC Mercy, the region’s only level one trauma and burn center. Clairton resident Amy Sowers was sitting on her porch, located less than a mile from the plant, and felt her house shake from the blast. “I could see smoke from my driveway,” she said. “We heard ambulances and fire trucks from every direction.” Sowers, 49, decided to leave the area after she said she smelled a faint smell in the air. Sowers, who grew up in Clairton, has seen several incidents at the plant over the years. Despite health concerns, Sowers said many residents cannot afford to leave. A maintenance worker was killed in an explosion at the plant in September 2009. In July 2010, another explosion injured 14 employees and six contractors. According to online OSHA records of workplace fatalities, the last death at the plant was in 2014, when a worker was burned and died after falling into a trench. After the 2010 explosion, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined US Steel and a subcontractor USD 175,000 for safety violations. US Steel appealed its citations and USD 143,500 in fines, which were later reduced under a settlement agreement. “Lives were lost again,” Sowers said. “How many more lives are going to have to be lost until something happens?” The Clairton coking plant continued to operate after the explosion, although two batteries that were the site of the explosion were shut down, officials said. Air quality concerns and health warnings The plant, a massive industrial facility along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, is considered the largest coking operation in North America and is one of four major US Steel plants in Pennsylvania. The plant converts coal to coke, a key component in the steel-making process. To make coke, coal is baked in special ovens for hours at high temperatures to remove impurities that could otherwise weaken steel. The process creates what’s known as coke gas — made up of a lethal mix of methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi said his heart goes out to the victims of Monday’s explosion. “The mill is such a big part of Clairton,” he said. “It’s just a sad day for Clairton.” The Allegheny County Health Department said it lifted an advisory it issued earlier in the day telling residents within 2 km of the plant to remain indoors and close all windows and doors. It said its monitors have not detected levels of soot or sulfur dioxide above federal standards. According to the company, the plant has approximately 1,400 workers. The plant has a long history of pollution concerns In recent years, the Clairton plant has been dogged by concerns about pollution. In 2019, it agreed to settle an air pollution lawsuit for USD 8.5 million. Five years later, the company agreed to spend USD 19.5 million in equipment upgrades and USD 5 million on local clean air efforts and programs as part of settling a federal lawsuit filed by Clean Air Council and PennEnvironment and the Allegheny County Health Department. Intel CEO has ‘amazing story’: Trump praises Lip-Bu Tan after calling for his resignation

In a surprising turn of events, US President Donald Trump praised Intel Corp CEO Lip-Bu Tan just days after publicly demanding his resignation. This shift came after Lip-Bu Tan met with the President at the White House on Monday to clear up what the CEO called “misinformation” about his track record, Bloomberg reported. The American chip icon’s shares jumped more than 2% in extended trading following Trump’s positive remarks about the meeting on Monday, reported the news agency. Why did Trump call for Lip-Bu Tan’s resignation? Last Thursday, Trump accused Tan of having a conflict of interest due to his ties to Chinese firms. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Tan should immediately step down as chief of the American chipmaker, describing him as “highly CONFLICTED.” Trump’s attack came after Republican Senator Tom Cotton wrote to Intel’s board questioning Tan’s ties to China. Cotton’s letter highlighted Tan’s investments in Chinese semiconductor companies and other such firms with connections to the country’s military, the news report said. The post had a significant impact on Intel’s stock, which fell 3.1% on August 7, the day of President Trump’s initial remarks. Meeting at the White House Following the controversy, Tan, who said he had the full backing of Intel’s board, reached out to the White House, writing to his employees on Thursday that he was “engaging with the administration to address the matters that have been raised and ensure they have the facts.” After the meeting, Trump posted a positive message on social media, saying, “The meeting was a very interesting one.” He called Tan’s “success and rise…an amazing story,” and announced that his Cabinet members would continue to meet with Tan and bring suggestions to him in the next week. Intel, in a statement, said Tan and Trump had discussed the company’s “commitment to strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership,” casting the talks as “candid and constructive.” The company added, “We appreciate the President’s strong leadership to advance these critical priorities and look forward to working closely with him and his Administration as we restore this great American company.” Read More

After pitching ‘land swap’, Trump says he’ll try to ‘get some territory back for Ukraine’

After floating the idea of “land swaps” to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, United States President Donald Trump said he would try to “get some territory back for Ukraine” that Russia has annexed since starting the war in 2022. “Russia’s occupied a big portion of Ukraine. They occupied prime territory. We’re going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine,” Donald Trump said, adding, “There’ll be some land swapping going on. I know that through Russia and through conversations with everybody, to the good of Ukraine.” Donald Trump also claimed that he would know “in the first two minutes” of his meeting with Vladimir Putin whether he’s willing to make a deal to end the war on Ukraine. The US President also said that he is going there [to Alaska] to “see what he has in mind.” “At the end of that meeting, probably the first two minutes, I’ll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made…I’m going to be telling him, ‘You’ve got to end this war.” Also Read | What will Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin discuss in Alaska? Is India tariffs on cards? Agenda revealed He said he thought Friday’s sitdown with Putin in Alaska would be “really a feel-out meeting.” Trump added that “it’ll be good, but it might be bad” and predicted he may say, “lots of luck, keep fighting. Or I may say, we can make a deal.” Donald Trump also reiterated his “land swap” pitch, saying that Kyiv and Moscow will both have to cede land to end the war in Ukraine, dismissing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s assertion that the country’s Constitution bars ceding territory to an invader. He has, so far, not been invited to participate in the Trump-Putin talks. Read More

Runway scare: Plane with 4 onboard crashes into parked aircraft at Montana airport, sparks fire | Watch viral video

A small plane, carrying four onboard, struck the parked aircraft, upon landing at Montana airport, which sparked fire. According to authorities, it has not caused serious injuries. The incident took place around 2 pm at the Kalispell City Airport, Kalispell Police Chief Jordan Venezio and the Federal Aviation Administration said. The FAA mentioned a Socata TBM 700 turboprop aircraft collided with an unoccupied plane on the ground. According to Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen, the impact ignited a fire, which spread to nearby grass before being brought under control and said two passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. It occurred at a small municipal airport located just south of Kalispell, a northwestern Montana city with a population of approximately 30,000. “My staff is on site at the plane crash at the Kalispell City Airport. From what we understand, no one was injured, praise God. We will be assisting local authorities and the airport in any way we can as they handle this unfortunate accident,” Representative Ryan Zinke said. What did witnesses say? Witnesses stated that the aircraft made a crash landing at the runway’s end and then struck another stationary plane. The aircraft attempting to land caught fire, but the pilot and three passengers were able to exit safely once the plane came to a halt, Hagen said. Ron Danielson, the manager of a nearby inn, said he saw and heard the crash moments before thick black smoke filled the sky. “It sounded like if you were to stick your head in a bass drum and somebody smacked it as hard as they could,” he added. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the flight had departed from Pullman, Washington. FAA records reveal that the aircraft, manufactured in 2011, is registered to Meter Sky LLC, based in Pullman. Jeff Guzzetti, an aviation safety consultant and former crash investigator for both the FAA and NTSB, noted that accidents involving aircraft colliding with parked planes occur several times a year in the general aviation sector.
