Minneapolis restaurant offers free meals after tragic Annunciation Catholic School shooting

A devastating mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis left the community reeling on August 27. The attack, which occurred during a school-wide Mass at Annunciation Catholic School, claimed the lives of two young students, aged 8 and 10, and injured 17 others, including 14 children. In a heartfelt response, Mac’s Fish and Chips, a restaurant located directly across from the church at 610 West 54th St., stepped up to support the grieving community by offering free meals, drinks, and a space to gather. Details about the shooting The shooting took place when students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade gathered for a traditional all-school Mass. Around 8:30 AM, a gunman in his early 20s, dressed in black and armed with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, opened fire through the church’s stained-glass windows, targeting children and worshippers inside. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the act as “absolutely incomprehensible,” noting the shooter barricaded doors with wooden planks before firing dozens of rounds. The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the church parking lot. Of the 17 injured, 14 are children, with two in critical condition. Hennepin County Medical Center received 11 patients, including nine children aged 6 to 14, four of whom required surgery for gunshot wounds from a high-velocity weapon. The tragedy has left parents, teachers, and neighbors in shock, with many describing scenes of chaos as children were evacuated, some covered in blood. Mac’s Fish and Chips steps up In the wake of this tragedy, Mac’s Fish and Chips, located just across the street from Annunciation Catholic Church, announced via email, “Please let as many people in the area know that they can use our space. Restrooms, beverages, meals on us.” This gesture aims to provide comfort and support to families, first responders, and community members affected by the shooting. Read More

Why an ex-Microsoft techie quit new job in just 20 days — story goes viral, netizens react

What could make someone quit a job within just 20 days of joining it? Toxic work culture, too much work – there could be a host of reasons. But for one ex-Microsoft employee from Singapore, the answer was simple: “the work was too chill.” The employee’s response supposedly shared by his team leader has now got everyone talking. “A guy from Singapore joined my team. Ex-Microsoft. Resigned in 20 days. When I asked why, he said: ‘The work is too chill. If I stay, I’ll stop growing. At 45, I’d enjoy this. But right now, I need the grind.’ Me: sitting here, chilling for the last 2 years,” the X user posted. Netizens debate The employee’s story resonated with multiple social media users, many of whom supported the ex-Microsoft worker, praising the shift. “If your works feels like chill, you are in the wrong company,” one user commented under the post. “He did it right. If you genuinely want to grow, you must be grinding. Sitting in a company without any real work or growth opportunities is enjoyable, but it’s also ruining your career,” said another user. “And bhai, you aren’t chilling man. You’re contributing for sure. It’s just that the learning curve has come in and you know how to do it efficiently,” a third user quipped. Amid all the comments, one X user seemed to tune in with the ex-Microsoft employee’s response, claiming that he too left Samsung for the same reason. ‘Work too chill’ or 7-day workweek? The recent post and netizen’s comments discussing whether to shift from where the “work is too chill” comes amid the already existing debates on work-life balance. Few days ago, a Reddit post ignited online discussions after an anonymous user claimed that an Indian housing finance company allegedly forced employees to work through the entire week, including Saturday and Sunday. According to the Reddit post, no additional compensation or extra day off was given to the employees who worked the extra hours over the weekend. Earlier this year, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s stance on ‘70-hour workweek’ had already sparked massive debates. Read More

Higher judiciary member ‘approached for favour’: SC orders probe into NCLAT judicial member’s claims

The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday ordered a probe into the claims of a judicial member of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) after he claimed that he was “approached by one of the most revered members of the higher judiciary”, reported news agency PTI. The inquiry will be conducted by the top court’s secretary general with the SC deciding the future course of action on the basis of the outcome, said the report, citing sources. Justice Sharad Kumar Sharma, the judicial member of the Chennai-based NCLAT, alleged that he was approached by a member of the higher judiciary for a favourable order in a case which was pending before him. He recused himself from hearing the matter and also mentioned the incident in a two-paragraph order passed on August 13. “We are anguished to observe that one of us, Member (Judicial), has been approached by one of the most revered members of the higher judiciary of this country for seeking an order in favour of a particular party. Hence, I recuse to hear the matter (sic),” the NCLAT order said. The two-member NCLAT bench comprised Justice Sharma and Technical Member Jatindranath Swain. The tribunal bench requested that the matter be placed before the “chairperson for nomination of an appropriate bench” to hear the case. It was hearing an appeal filed by AS Reddy, suspended director of Hyderabad-based KLSR Infratech, which is facing Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). After the completion of hearing, the judgment in the matter was reserved by the tribunal on June 18. It also granted seven days time to both parties to file written submissions, if any. CIRP was initiated by the Hyderabad bench of the NCLT against KLSR Infratech over the plea filed by its creditor AS Met Corp Pvt Ltd on July 14, 2023. It appointed an interim resolution professional after suspending the board of the realty firm. The order was challenged by AS Reddy before the NCLAT. Read More

Goldman Sachs sees Brent crude slipping to low $50s by late 2026

HomeEnergy NewsGoldman Sachs sees Brent crude slipping to low $50s by late 2026 As of early Asian trade on Wednesday, Brent crude futures were around $67 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate stood near $63. By CNBCTV18.com August 27, 2025, 11:47:58 PM IST (Published) Goldman Sachs expects Brent crude futures to fall to the low $50s a barrel by the end of 2026 as global oil supplies outpace demand. In a client note, the U.S. investment bank said it expects the oil surplus to widen sharply, averaging 1.8 million barrels per day from the fourth quarter of 2025 through the fourth quarter of 2026. That build-up could lead to a nearly 800 million barrel increase in worldwide inventories by the end of 2026. A significant share of that stock, about one-third, or 270 million barrels, is projected to be stored in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, where demand is expected to soften further. Goldman said this combination of higher inventories and weaker OECD consumption will push Brent’s fair value down from the current mid-$70 range. While Brent is expected to stay close to forward contract levels through the rest of 2025, Goldman forecasts a sharper drop below those levels in 2026 as storage volumes climb. The bank also highlighted a potential upside scenario. If China accelerates its oil stockpiling to 0.8 million barrels a day, up from the current 0.4 million, Brent’s average price could rise by about $6 a barrel compared to Goldman’s baseline, lifting it to around $62 in 2026. As of early Asian trade on Wednesday, Brent crude futures were around $67 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate stood near $63. The forecast underlines the pressure building in the oil market, with storage, demand shifts, and strategic buying set to determine pricing over the next 18 months. For producers and traders, Goldman’s projections suggest tighter margins ahead and a volatile path driven by supply growth and policy choices. Read More

Sindhu, Satwik-Chirag enter pre-quarterfinals at World Championships

HomeSports NewsSindhu, Satwik-Chirag enter pre-quarterfinals at World Championships Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu once again relied on a late surge to overcome Malaysia’s world No. 40 Letshanaa Karupathevan and reach the women’s singles prequarterfinals of the BWF World Championships here on Wednesday. By PTI August 27, 2025, 9:35:31 PM IST (Published) Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu once again relied on a late surge to overcome Malaysia’s world No. 40 Letshanaa Karupathevan and reach the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals of the BWF World Championships here on Wednesday. The former world champion, who had survived a scare in the opening round too, rallied from 12-18 down in the first game to register a 21-19 21-15 victory in 42 minutes. She will face Chinese second seed Wang Zhi Yi. Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then produced a solid show to overcame Chinese Taipei’s Yang Po Han and Liu Kuang Heng 22-20 21-13 and advance to the pre-quarterfinals. Earlier, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto entered the pre-quarterfinals with a 21-11 21-16 win over Ireland’s Joshua Magee and Moya Ryan. The Indians will next face fifth seeds Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong for a place in the quarterfinals. It was a case of déjà vu for Sindhu, who had looked sluggish against Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova in her opener on Tuesday. Against Letshanaa too, she struggled to find her rhythm early and trailed throughout, unable to build pressure on the Malaysian’s defence. Letshanaa started aggressively, firing a smash to the Indian’s forehand flank that went unanswered before following it up with a delicate drop that kissed the line. Sindhu struggled to find her rhythm and trailed 1-4. The Malaysian continued to dictate terms, mixing her down-the-line smashes with quick net play. Sindhu was unable to build pressure or string together points, and Letshanaa went into the mid-game interval with an 11-8 lead. Technically sound and physically strong, Letshanaa’s faster, attacking game exposed Sindhu’s inconsistency as the Indian slipped behind further. At 18-12, the Malaysian looked firmly in control. But Sindhu clawed her way back into the contest. With six straight points, she levelled the score at 18-all, aided by an error from Letshanaa, who sent a smash wide under pressure. Sindhu kept her composure at 19-19, producing a clean smash to grab the game point, which was also the first time she led in the game. An indecision at the backline triggering a weak reply from Letshanaa was swiftly punished by the Indian, who closed out the game after her opponent sent another shot long. Sindhu carried the momentum into the second game, racing to a 5-1 advantage, drawing her opponent forward and finishing points with authority at the net and from the backline. The Malaysian struggled to keep pace as Sindhu extended her lead to 7-3 and 9-5, though the Indian was guilty of a couple of misjudged leaves at the backline. A fortuitous net cord winner further stretched her cushion as she went up 10-6 at the mid-point of the second game. Sindhu looked in command, her smashes finding range and her variations troubling the Malaysian, who kept fighting before the Indian grabbed seven match points following a couple of long shots from Letshanaa. Sindhu sealed the match when the Malaysian miscued a forehand. In men’s doubles, Satwik and Chirag showcased their trademark attacking prowess and delivered some venomous smashes from the backcourt. The Indians committed quite a few service errors and were guilty of giving away the attack. Their opponents were equally up for the task especially in the first part of the opening game as the two pairs moved and neck and neck till the break. After resumption, the Indian duo tightened its game and slowly opened up a handy four-point cushion at 20-16. However, the Taipei duo reeled off four straight points, including the Yang Po Han’s stunning behind-the-back shot that creeped over the net, to level the contest at 20-all. Chirag then produced a steep downward return that earned the Indians another game point, and this time they made no mistake, converting it to seal the opener 22-20. After the change of ends, the Indians opened up a 6-3 lead but Liu and Yang kept making things difficult as Satwik and Chirag managed to take a two-point cushion at the break. After a pep talk from coach Tan Kim Her in the interval, the Indians managed to win a series of quick points to take a 16-10 lead. It was all India thereafter as Satwik and Chirag grabbed seven match points after winning a crucial referral and converted quickly to seal the match. Read More

FinMin monthly review flags US tariffs’ secondary risks to economy

HomeEconomy NewsFinMin monthly review flags US tariffs’ secondary risks to economy The Finance Ministry said while the immediate impact of US tariffs may be limited, secondary effects could challenge India’s trade outlook. Strong domestic demand and reforms continue to anchor growth. The Finance Ministry has cautioned that the full effects of US tariff action will play out over time, warning of secondary and tertiary challenges even as the near-term impact looks contained. In its latest Monthly Economic Review, the ministry stressed that ongoing India–US trade negotiations will be crucial, as prolonged uncertainty could affect Indian industry given the importance of the American market for exports. The report added that the new levies are expected to weigh on global trade in the latter half of 2025 and throughout 2026. It observed that uncertainty in the trading environment, compounded by geopolitical tensions, is already affecting business confidence, investment sentiment and supply chains. Global trade data underscores this shift. The World Trade Organization recently cut its 2025 merchandise trade growth forecast to 0.9% from 2.7%, citing the drag from tariffs and protectionist policies. The Trade Policy Uncertainty Index rose 17% in July, reflecting the heightened anxiety among firms and investors. Also Read: No need for panic over US tariffs, India’s exports diversified: govt sources Despite this, India’s external sector showed resilience in July. Goods and services exports rose 4.5% year-on-year to $68.3 billion, with merchandise exports up 7.3%, led by a strong 12.7% rise in non-petroleum, non-gems and jewellery shipments. Services exports edged higher by 1.4%. Imports grew 6.1% to $80 billion, driven by firm consumption demand, widening the trade deficit to $11.7 billion from $10.1 billion a year ago. The ministry pointed to calibrated trade policy as a buffer against tariff risks. The recently concluded Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the UK, which took effect in July, is expected to double bilateral trade by 2030 while protecting sensitive sectors. Agreements with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and negotiations with the EU and US were highlighted as part of efforts to diversify markets and strengthen supply chains. Also Read: Despite US tariffs, India eyes stronger export push with EFTA, UK and EU deals: sources On the domestic front, economic activity remained strong in July. High-frequency indicators such as e-way bill generation hit record highs, while manufacturing PMI rose to a 16-month peak and services PMI signalled continued expansion. Consumer spending was buoyed by FMCG sales, UPI transactions and steady auto demand, while a favourable monsoon lifted rural sentiment. Inflation dropped sharply to 1.6% in July, well below the RBI’s lower tolerance band, thanks to easing food prices. The ministry noted that this benign inflation backdrop, coupled with S&P’s sovereign rating upgrade to BBB, a strong capex push, and forthcoming reforms such as GST changes and state-level deregulation, provide India with fiscal and monetary space to sustain growth While acknowledging that tariff-related uncertainties and global headwinds cannot be ignored, the review concluded on a balanced note: India enters this phase from a position of relative strength, underpinned by resilient domestic demand, diversified trade strategies and structural reforms. Flood threat looms again over UP’s Prayagraj, administration on alert

Sangam city faces renewed flood risk as Ganga and Yamuna rivers rise near danger mark; relief shelters open amid dam water release and cloudbursts. By PTI August 27, 2025, 9:22:12 PM IST (Published) With water being released from upstream dams amid cloudbursts and landslides in several parts of the country, flood conditions are returning to Sangam city as water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers near the danger mark of 84.73 metres. As of 4 pm on Wednesday (August 27), the Yamuna river level was recorded at 83.98 metres in Naini. The Ganga stood at 83.79 metres in Phaphamau, 83.36 metres in Chhatnag, and 83.98 metres at Bakshi Dam. SDM (Sadar) Abhishek Singh told PTI that in view of the flood threat, five relief shelters have been operational since Tuesday in the Sadar area, housing nearly 1,200 people. ”One of the relief centres is in Sadar Bazar and another at Annie Besant School in Chhota Baghara. Three other shelters have been opened at different locations, while three more are in the pipeline,” Singh said. Heramb Chaturvedi, a retired professor from Allahabad Central University, said the recurrent flooding in Prayagraj is due to the water being discharged from multiple barrages and dams. ”This is not development but a model of destruction. You cannot impose the models of small European countries on a vast country like India without consequences,” Chaturvedi said. Recalling the floods of 1966 and 1978, he said, ”This is the first time in five decades that flooding is occurring repeatedly. Until 1978, there were not as many dams. Now, with excessive water inflows threatening dam safety, water is repeatedly being released.” Chaturvedi added that such frequent flooding is happening for the first time in 50 years and blamed it on ”human interference with nature.” Also Read: India plans outreach programs to top textile markets as US tariffs hit exports Read More
