CBI arrests 3 Military Engineer Service officers for accepting bribes

According to officials, the accused officers had initially demanded ₹1 lakh, or 2% of the contract value, to provide site access for repair and maintenance work under a government tender

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three Military Engineer Services (MES) officers posted in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 80,000 from a contractor. This marks the second major case against MES officials in the state within the last two years.

Those arrested are: Nitesh Kumar Singh, Garrison Engineer, Rakesh Sahu, Assistant Garrison Engineer, Deepak, Junior Engineer and middleman Rajesh Mishra, as per the CBI.

According to officials, the accused officers had initially demanded ₹1 lakh, or 2 per cent of the contract value, to provide site access for repair and maintenance work under a government tender. Following negotiations, the demand was reduced to ₹80,000.

Acting on a complaint from the contractor, the CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while receiving the bribe. Searches at their offices and residences led to the recovery of incriminating documents and materials, the agency said.

This case comes in the wake of a larger probe launched in July 2023, when the CBI registered five cases involving MES officials in Jabalpur for awarding 59 non-viable contracts between 2020 and 2023, causing an alleged loss of ₹16.24 crore to the government.
