Charlotte Hornets Reportedly Release 11-Year NBA Veteran

Spencer Dinwiddie is coming off a year where he played 79 games for the Dallas Mavericks.

The former Colorado guard had averages of 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists per contest while shooting 41.6% from the field and 33.3% from the three-point range.

Over the offseason, Dinwiddie signed with the Charlotte Hornets.

However, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that he will now be released.

Via Charania: “The Charlotte Hornets are waiving guard Spencer Dinwiddie, sources tell ESPN. Dinwiddie, an 11-year NBA veteran, signed a one-year deal with the Hornets in July free agency. Charlotte had to release a guaranteed salary ahead of season opener next week.”

Dinwiddie Before The Charlotte Hornets:

The 11-year veteran has also spent time playing for the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks.

His career averages are 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists per contest while shooting 41.4% from the field and 33.3% from the three-point range in 621 games.

Via Keith Smith of Spotrac: “Spencer Dinwiddie on the Hornets was always an odd signing to me. They have a lot of younger guards on that roster. I still thought he’d make the opening roster, since he was a FA signing. This puts Pat Connaughton in line to make the team, which is a bit of a surprise.”

Dinwiddie will be an intriguing free agent who could help a lot of teams.

He would provide great depth to a contender (or veteran leadership to a rebuilding franchise).

During the 2020 season, Dinwiddie averaged 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per contest in 64 games for the Nets.

Via @SleeperKnicks: “The Hornets recently waived G Spencer Dinwiddie. With Malcolm Brogdon formerly expected to play a key backup G role, but retiring, should the Knicks pursue Dinwiddie??”

The Hornets finished the 2024-25 season as the 14th seed in the Eastern Conference with a 21-61 record.

They missed the NBA playoffs (and the play-in tournament).

Via James Plowright: “I wonder if Spencer Dinwiddie regrets signing so early in free agency with the Hornets now only to be waived. It is worth noting Pat Connaughton is the more valuable trade pieces due to his larger salary $9.2M for trade matching purposes”
