Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, recently reacted to Ben Shelton losing to Jaume Munar at the 2025 Swiss Indoors. Both players have faced each other four times on the ATP Tour, with the Spaniard winning three of those matches, all occurring this year.
Last year, Shelton finished as the runner-up at the ATP 500 hard-court tournament in Basel. He reached the final before losing 4-6, 6-7(4) to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Brad Gilbert Talks About Ben Shelton Losing to Jaume Munar at the 2025 Swiss Indoors
In the lead-up to the Swiss Indoors this year, Shelton competed at the 2025 Shanghai Masters, where he lost with a 2-6, 4-6 score in the second round to David Goffin.
Shelton was seeded second at the 2025 Swiss Indoors, and he began his campaign by defeating qualifier Kamil Majchrzak in the first round, winning with a scoreline of 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(7). He faced Munar in the second round and lost in straight sets, with a score of 3-6, 4-6.
Reacting to Shelton’s loss to Munar in Basel, Gilbert took to social media to express how much he enjoyed watching the Spaniard secure his third win against the World No. 6 this year.
The tennis coach also noted that Munar’s victory was “very surprising,” considering his very little success on indoor hard courts in the past.
“wow 🤩 Jamie Munar in 3-0 vs Gimme Shelton this year, what is very surprising he is 2-0 indoors, a surface he had not a lot of success on before this year,” Gilbert posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Shelton’s only win against Munar in their four meetings on the ATP Tour occurred in the second round of the 2023 Shanghai Masters, where he secured a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Who Will Munar Face at the 2025 Swiss Indoors QF?
Following his victory over Shelton in the second round of the 2025 Swiss Indoors, Munar is set to face fifth seed Félix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Auger-Aliassime began his campaign in Basel by defeating fellow Canadian Gabriel Diallo in the first round, winning with a scoreline of 6-2, 7-5. He then secured his quarterfinal spot against Munar by triumphing over qualifier Marin Čilić with a scoreline of 7-6(2), 7-6(2) in the second round.
Munar and Auger-Aliassime have faced each other only once on the ATP Tour, during the quarterfinals of the 2019 Rio Open, which the Canadian won with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime then went on to finish as the runner-up to Laslo Djere in the tournament.
The winner of the quarterfinal match between Munar and Auger-Aliassime at the 2025 Swiss Indoors will advance to face either ninth seed Denis Shapovalov or João Fonseca in the semifinals.
