According to Central Pollution Control Board’s data, Delhi’s overall AQI, as of 11 am on December 14, stood at 458, putting the national capital’s air in ‘severe’ category.
Apart from Delhi, the air quality in adjoining Noida in the NCR also dipped as the city recorded the worst AQI reading in the country at 455 on Saturday, falling in the severe+ category. It was followed by Greater Noida at 442, according to CPCB data.
General School classes moved to hybrid mode
Under Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan, classes of students up to class 9, and class 11, were moved to hybrid mode due to the severity of the air pollution in Delhi.
General Delhi’s air to remain ‘severe’?
According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi (AQEWS) forecast, the AQI is expected to remain in the ‘severe’ category on Sunday, but could improve to the ‘poor’ category on Monday.
Delhi air pollution | Key points
- According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the national capital’s AQI is expected to remain in “severe” category on Sunday and is “likely to be in the very poor category from Monday to Tuesday”.
- “The air quality is likely to be in the ‘severe’ category on Sunday. The air quality is likely to be in the ‘very poor’ category on Monday and Tuesday. The outlook for the subsequent six days is that the air quality is likely to be in the ‘very poor’ category,” the AQEWS bulletin stated on Saturday evening.
- According to Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, “The wind speed has been very low since Friday, leading to a spike in pollution levels. Due to the western disturbance, the AQI might remain in this range on Sunday as well. Wind speed might pick up from Monday again, bringing some respite.”
- The Delhi High Court ruled that the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to control pollution does not obligate the Centre to allow its employees to work from home, noting that the guidelines only grant the government discretionary authority to permit such arrangements.

General Delhi AQI live updates: Environmentalist says GRAP is ‘reactive measure’, not long-term solution
Delhi AQI live updates: Environmentalist Bhavreen Kandhari on Sunday criticised the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), calling it a “reactive measure” rather than a long-term solution, following the imposition of Stage-IV restrictions in the national capital amid worsening air pollution.
“GRAP, as we know, is a reactive measure. After seeing terrible numbers, GRAP-IV is invoked. What has been done over the years, the decisions taken by the policymakers, is the result we are seeing; it is not an overnight situation… After a few days, when the AQI numbers drop, GRAP will be revoked. This is not the solution…,” Kandhari told ANI. (ANI)

General Delhi AQI live updates: ‘Very important to ask questions, be alert’- Environmentalist on Delhi pollution
Delhi AQI live updates: Environmentalist Bhavreen Kandhari, while talking about Delhi pollution, told news agency PTI, “It’s very important for citizens not to forget. I cannot speak for the government and the policy makers because the pollution is going to stay. It’s the local emissions that will continue. It’s only that right now it’s the visibility and of course, it gets worse because of the temperature falling and then the wind getting stagnant. But we are living with the pollution throughout the year, the toxicity. So our children are breathing that. So it’s very important that you don’t forget to ask and question and be alert ourselves. Otherwise, this is not going to change. In the last two years, we’ve not even had one good air day.”

Delhi NCR pollution live updates: Graded Response Action Plan, also called Grap, has four stages, invoked as precautionary measures to battle air pollution – Stage 1 is invoked when the AQI crosses 200, stage 2 when it crosses 300, stage 3 at 400 and stage 4 at 450. As a fifth measure part of stage 4, CAQM asks state governments to consider closure of educational institutions and non-emergency commercial activities, permitting running of vehicles on an odd-even basis of registration numbers. General Delhi NCR pollution live updates: Delhi-NCR pollution will stay severe today. Here’s why
Delhi NCR pollution live updates: Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are bracing for another day under a severe blanket of hazardous air quality on Sunday, December 14, following a dramatic spike in pollution levels throughout Saturday. Forecasts indicate the Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to remain in the “severe” category, with only slight relief anticipated from Monday onwards.
The persistent “severe” air quality is primarily attributed to weather patterns, specifically a Western Disturbance that has caused “very low wind speed” since Friday, HT has reported.
According to Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, this low wind speed has led to a major spike in pollution levels, and due to the western disturbance, “the AQI might remain in this range on Sunday as well”. Read more.
