Delhi fog causes flight disruptions at IGI Airport

Delhi Airport on Tuesday witnessed 10 flight cancellations along with 270 delays due to fog and low visibility conditions. This includes 6 arrivals and 4 departures for the day, an official told PTI.

As per information available on flight tracking website Flightradar24.com, over 270 flights have been delayed with an average delay time for departures is 29 minutes

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Tuesday morning issued a passenger advisory amid dense fog and low visibility in the region, warning of flight delays and disruptions. The visibility on some runways of the airport dropped to as low as 100m in the early hours.

“Flight operations are currently conducted under CAT II conditions due to dense fog, which may result in delays and cancellations.” GMR-owned Delhi Airport said. “For the latest flight status, kindly contact your respective airlines.”

Dense fog in Delhi and adjoining areas has resulted in road, rail and flight disruptions for days, leading to massive cancellations and delays across channels.

IndiGo issues travel advisory

IndiGo on Tuesday issued a travel advisory for passengers travelling to and from Pragyaraj, Ayodhya and Pantnagar.

“Pragyaraj, Ayodhya and Pantnagar continue to remain wrapped in chilly winter air and lingering fog this morning. The fluctuating visibility has led to changes in flight schedules, and operations may be slower than usual as conditions evolve,” the airline said.

Once the weather settles, operations will gradually stabilise, and flights will depart as planned, it added.

SpiceJet also issued an advisory warning of impact on departures/arrivals at Delhi (DEL), Amritsar (ATQ), Jammu (IXJ), Ayodhya (AYJ), Gorakhpur (GOP), Varanasi (VNS), Darbhanga (DBR), Patna (PAT) and Bagdogra (IXB) airports, citing bad weather and poor visibility on Tuesday.

What is CAT-III

India’s busiest airport is equipped with CAT-III Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Approach Lighting Systems (ALS) that help in precision landing in low visibility conditions. The runways are also well prepared for such weather conditions with visibility sensors and Runway Visual Range (RVR) systems.

CAT-III is a type of instrument landing system (ILS) approach that allows aircraft to land in conditions of very low visibility, such as fog, rain or snow, with a runway visual range (RVR) of 50-200 meters.

For conducting flight operations under low visibility, airlines have to mandatorily deploy CAT-III trained pilots as well as a CAT-compliant aircraft fleet.
