Training camp is only a week old, and the stories are trickling out on individuals and units on both sides of the ball. As usual, the defense is ahead of the offense. It’s a typical storyline in training camp.
This year it should be truer as this is Brian Flores’ third year as the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator, and there were only two significant additions with Javon Hargrave and Johnathan Allen on the defensive line. Theo Jackson taking over at safety is new, but he’s been with the organization for a few years, so his learning curve is minimal.
The Vikings may have quietly discovered a new standout cornerback at training camp. Could this emerging defensive back become the long-term solution at the position?
Let’s face it, even minor injuries can sideline a cornerback for a short time, and the backups will need to step in and maintain the standard as closely as possible. It sounds like that is going to be OK, but the better news is that when the team has to go into its nickel and dime packages, there won’t be too many worries.
That formation would consist of four linemen, one linebacker, and six defensive backs, offering both coverage options and unique blitz packages. You could see a defensive backfield comprised of Harrison Smith, Theo Jackson, Murphy, Rodgers, Josh Metellus, and Okudah, or McGlothern, or really any combination of those players.
So, while you may be one of those people who thinks the Vikings still need to bring in Asante Samuel Jr. for depth, you may not need to be too tall on that soapbox.
