Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, released on August 15, 1975, remains one of the most legendary films in Indian cinema. From its unforgettable dialogues and blockbuster songs to its iconic characters, Veeru, Jai, Gabbar, every part of the film has become a cultural milestone. As the film celebrates 50 years, here are some fascinating behind-the-scenes casting facts that many fans still don’t know.

Dharmendra Was First Offered Gabbar AND Thakur

Before he became the lovable and fearless Veeru, Dharmendra was actually offered Gabbar Singh and Thakur Baldev Singh. Imagine him saying, “Kitne aadmi the?” It’s very hard to picture, right? Dharmendra later revealed that although he was offered the darker roles, his instincts pushed him toward Veeru, and that’s the character he chose.

Amitabh Bachchan Became Jai Because of Dharmendra

Amitabh Bachchan, who went on to make Jai one of his most iconic roles, wasn’t the original choice. It was Dharmendra who recommended him to director Ramesh Sippy when Bachchan was still rising in his career. Before Amitabh, the role was reportedly offered to Shatrughan Sinha.

Danny Denzongpa Was the First Choice for Gabbar Singh

Today, it’s impossible to imagine anyone but Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh. But surprisingly, the role was initially given to Danny Denzongpa. Danny had already committed to Feroz Khan’s Dharmatma and didn’t want to go back on his word. He later said he had no regrets, as the role went to Amjad Khan, whose performance became unforgettable. Once Danny stepped out, writers Salim–Javed suggested Amjad Khan and the rest is history.

Dilip Kumar Declined Thakur’s Role

The legendary Dilip Kumar was offered the role of Thakur Baldev Singh, but he turned it down, saying he did not emotionally connect with the character. He later admitted he regretted the decision. After his rejection, the role landed to Sanjeev Kumar, who delivered an iconic performance.

Sanjeev Kumar Wanted to Play Gabbar

Another surprising funfact is: Sanjeev Kumar in the start was more interested in playing Gabbar Singh. But due to his calm on-screen image, the makers felt he suited the dignified presence of Thakur more.

50 Years Later…

Now half a century after its release, Sholay still stands strong as a masterpiece.
