FIU Freshman Shamir Sterlin Gushes Over Jeremiah Smith’s ‘Effortless’ Trait That Makes Him ‘Toughest Competitor’

As Florida International University gears up for the 2025 college football season, one of its rising stars is already making headlines, this time not for what he’s done, but for who’s left a lasting impression on him. FIU freshman defensive back Shamir Sterlin recently spoke candidly about the most formidable opponent he’s ever faced on the gridiron: none other than Ohio State’s standout wide receiver, Jeremiah Smith.

‘Effortless’ Movement Leaves a Lasting Impression on Shamir Sterlin

Smith’s ability to make elite-level plays look routine has captured the attention of fans, analysts, and his toughest defenders. That includes Sterlin, who built a reputation in high school as one of Florida’s most intelligent and physical defensive backs.
“Jeremiah Smith,” Sterlin said without hesitation. “He moves across the field with a type of grace. Like, when he runs, you could tell it’s just effortless for him when it comes to pinpointing the ball and things of that nature. Definitely a one-of-one for sure.”
Before enrolling at FIU in 2024, Sterlin starred at Treasure Coast High School, where he amassed 155 tackles, 93 solo stops, five interceptions, and 14 pass breakups over three seasons. He earned First Team All-Area honors and was a consistent force on the field, known for his sharp instincts, open-field tackling, and leadership qualities. He also competed in Elite 7-on-7 tournaments with Treasure Coast Elite, sharpening his skills against top-tier talent like Smith.

In his freshman campaign at FIU, Sterlin has already played in three games and recorded nine tackles, including back-to-back four-tackle performances against Indiana and Monmouth. Off the field, his 5.0 GPA and high honors underscore his commitment to excellence in all areas.

The Panthers are entering a new chapter under head coach Willie Simmons, who brings a fresh energy and culture shift after three straight 4-8 seasons. With a renewed sense of unity and purpose, Simmons and his players, Sterlin included, are optimistic about improving in Conference USA.

As FIU prepares to open the season against Bethune-Cookman, Sterlin is expected to be a key contributor in the secondary, especially as the team looks to clamp down on dynamic offensive threats across the conference.

Meanwhile, Smith continues his meteoric rise at Ohio State. After a record-breaking freshman season where he totaled 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns, Smith shattered Cris Carter’s freshman receiving records. He’s earned All-American honors and is a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, Biletnikoff Award, and Walter Camp Player of the Year.

Sterlin’s admiration only highlights what many already believe: Smith’s unique blend of size, speed, and football IQ makes him one of the most dominant forces in college football today.
