The Indianapolis Colts have remained true to their word regarding former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
Jones was not signed to the Colts as the guaranteed backup quarterback. The 28-year-old former first-round pick is going to get a shot at the starting position ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
Although preseason depth charts are unofficial, the Colts wouldn’t label Anthony Richardson or Jones the starter when they unveiled their depth chart on Monday morning.
Richardson, a former first-rounder out of Florida, joined the Colts as their fourth-overall pick in 2023. He has two seasons under his belt and even started 11 games last year.
During his rookie year, Richardson completed just 60 percent of his passes for 577 yards and three touchdowns. During that time, the Colts went just 2-2.

In 2024, Richardson appeared in a career-high 11 games. He completed 126 of his passes, posting a percentage of 48. Richardson threw for 1,814 yards. He tossed eight touchdowns, but threw 12 interceptions.
Richardson’s passing wasn’t a shining point, but on the ground, he rushed 86 times for 499 yards and six touchdowns. So far, the Colts are far from convinced he’s the long-term face of the franchise.
Daniel Jones has four more years of experience on his resume. While his run with the Giants ended on a low note, the Colts could be the former sixth-overall pick’s redemption arc.
At this point, Jones has 70 games of regular-season experience. During his rookie year in 2019, Jones became a full-time starter for 12 games. He would maintain that position for the next five seasons, but saw his time with the Giants cut short after 10 games in 2024.
Last season, Jones completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,070 yards. He threw eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Giants were 2-8 before they decided to bench Jones.
Back in 2023, Jones was sidelined with an injury after six games. When he went down, he had just 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions, along with a 1-5 record. It was clear that after two lackluster years, Jones was losing support within the Giants’ organization. He was released last November.
Since leaving the Giants, Jones had a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings, but didn’t appear in any games. When Jones signed with the Colts to a one-year deal back in the spring, the team’s General Manager, Chris Ballard, confirmed there would be a quarterback competition this summer. The depth chart confirms it once again.
The Colts will pay a visit to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday to begin their preseason.
