If the recent theatrical re-release of Shin Godzilla wasn’t enough for you, GKIDS has something else in store for later this month. Next up for Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s 2016 bureaucratic city-stomper is SHIN GODZILLA:ORTHOchromatic, which presents the film in black and white.
Limited North American screenings are lined up for August 31.
SHIN GODZILLA:ORTHOchromatic Trailer
SHIN GODZILLA:ORTHOchromatic first made its way to cinemas in Japan in October 2023 in the buildup to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One.
The re-release of Shin Godzilla managed to earn $2.2 million in the U.S. box office over the course of its first four days, landing it in the #11 spot for the weekend.
Here’s how GKIDS describes the film:
Something has surfaced in Tokyo Bay. As the Prime Minister of Japan pleads with the public to remain calm, a horrific creature of tremendous size makes landfall in the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Then it evolves. The government assembles a motley task force to combat the monster when an envoy from the US Department of State delivers a folder of classified documents. On its cover is written: “GODZILLA.”
From Director Hideaki Anno and Co-Director Shinji Higuchi, SHIN GODZILLA offers a thrilling origin story to one of cinema’s greatest creations. Propelled by astounding visual effects and rapid fire dialogue, SHIN GODZILLA is equal parts pulse-pounding action film and venomous political satire, worthy of the franchise’s towering history.
