DK Metcalf made a huge mistake in Week 16. While it didn’t cost the Pittsburgh Steelers anything at the time, it could come back to bite them. Metcalf let a fan get to him, leading to an altercation with the fan. As a result, Metcalf has been suspended for the final two games of the regular season. Former NFL linebacker LaVar Arrington criticized Metcalf for his actions.
“DK Metcalf, you need to have more control over your emotions,” Arrington said recently on his 2 Pros and a Cup of Joe podcast. “Stay focused in on the game. You are a major piece to the Steelers’ offense… Grow up… Somebody else is going to get him. If it’s not that person, it’s going to be somebody else that gets him.
“He’s going to do this in a moment in time where it’s going to cost him, and it’s going to cost others, possibly. He did it during the game… The bottom line is, don’t walk over there. Don’t walk over there to begin with… Handle yourself. This isn’t about everybody else… He needs to tighten up… That’s a lack of self-control and a lack of accountability. It’s a selfish issue.”
What Metcalf did was wrong. There’s no denying that. It wasn’t like this fan was on the field. Metcalf walked over to him and put himself into that situation. He didn’t have to get physical with the fan.
Does that absolve the fan of any blame? Not at all. It’s unclear what exactly he said to set Metcalf off. The two reportedly have a history, with Metcalf having a problem with the same fan last year. The fan instigated the situation and wanted Metcalf to lose his cool.
Unfortunately, he got what he wanted, as could be heard in a video capturing his reaction after the incident with Metcalf. Now, Metcalf has to deal with the consequences of his actions.

However, that doesn’t necessarily make him selfish. He made a mistake. The important thing is that Metcalf recognizes what he did wrong and corrects his behavior. While football is an intense game with a lot of emotion, he can’t let fans rattle him like that.
Also, Metcalf had far more to lose in that interaction. He’s already cost himself hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, his suspension also voided the guaranteed money in his contract. While the Steelers don’t plan on using that to punish Metcalf, it puts a little doubt into his future.
It remains to be seen if Metcalf’s suspension hurts the Steelers. They haven’t clinched a playoff spot yet. If they fail to win the AFC North, Metcalf’s blunder could become a more pivotal moment.
