Delaware has had an impressive introduction to the FBS landscape, with Ryan Beard’s team entering the Week 8 matchup against Jacksonville State already having achieved several milestones. They got their maiden win over an FBS program (as an FBS program) against the UConn Huskies before securing their first CUSA victory against the FIU Panthers in Week 4.
Although they lost a close one at home to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers last time out, the Blue Hens are well-positioned for success. Quarterback Nick Minicucci earned PFSN Midseason All-CUSA first team honors, and the offense sits in the top half of the FBS in PFSN’s College OFFi metric. As a result, they’re 3-2 (1-1 in CUSA play) ahead of the Wednesday night trip to Alabama.
Reigning CUSA champions Jacksonville State underwent significant offseason changes with the departure of head coach Rich Rodriguez and several key players. Early on, it looked like they’d struggle to match last season’s success. Yet, after going 1-3 in out-of-conference play, Charles Kelly’s team has flourished in CUSA competition, defeating Liberty and Sam Houston.
While one man doesn’t make a program, the Gamecocks dove into the transfer portal and pulled out a gem with Power Four experience, who is dominating at the Group of Five level. Running back Cam Cook leads the nation with 142 carries for 832 yards, leads CUSA with seven rushing touchdowns, and is PFSN’s 10th-ranked running back (84.3 PFSN RBi score).
