General Tariff news LIVE: Trump’s 50% tariff on India to not impact growth, says S&P director
Tariff news LIVE: S&P Global Ratings Director YeeFarn Phua said on Wednesday that Trump tariffs will not have any impact on India’s growth.
As per the S&P director, the 50 percent tariff on India will not impact the country’s growth as it is not a trade-oriented economy, and its sovereign ratings outlook will continue to remain positive,
In May last year, S&P had upgraded the outlook on India’s sovereign rating of ‘BBB-‘ to positive, citing robust economic growth.
Replying to a query on whether the tariff imposition poses downside risks to the positive outlook on India, YeeFarn said, “I don’t think the tariffs imposed on India will have an impact in terms of economic growth, largely because India is not a very trade-oriented economy. And if you look at India’s exposure to the US in terms of exports to GDP, it is just about 2 per cent”.

The United States has in recent days targeted India’s oil imports from Russia.
2. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India.

General India tariff news LIVE updates: Sri Lankan lawmaker warns Parliament on US tariffs’ impact on India
India tariff news LIVE updates: A Sri Lankan lawmaker has urged Parliament not to take lightly the impact of the US tariffs on Delhi, emphasising that India was the only country to provide crucial assistance during the island’s worst economic crisis, a media report said on Monday.
Speaking in Parliament, Harsha de Silva defended New Delhi’s opposition to what he described as US President Donald Trump’s “unfair and selective” trade measures.
“Don’t laugh at India. Don’t mock them when they are down because when we were down, they were the only ones to lend us a hand,” he was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. “It ain’t over until the fat lady sings. We witnessed you laughing. Don’t laugh. India expected the tariffs to come down to 15%, and so did we.”
Sri Lanka’s financial collapse in 2022 led to fuel shortages, scarcity of food and medicine, and depleted foreign reserves, resulting in its first-ever debt default.
India became Colombo’s largest supporter, extending over USD 4 billion in credit lines, currency swaps, deferred loan repayments, and numerous shipments of humanitarian aid.

Kerala also hosts the highest number of seafood processing units in the country, and the increased tariffs are expected to adversely affect seafood exports as well, the chief minister said, according to an official statement.

General India tariff news LIVE updates: US duty increase on shrimp could benefit India, says Maharashtra minister
India tariff news LIVE updates: Maharashtra fisheries minister Nitesh Rane said the recent hike in tariffs on shrimp exported from India to the United States should be viewed as an opportunity to grow the country’s domestic market for prawns and other seafood. Urging stakeholders not to be overly concerned about US duties, Rane pointed out that Europe and Vietnam remain strong export destinations for Indian shrimp, while the domestic seafood market is large enough to support farmers and fishermen.
Last week, the US increased reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25 per cent to as high as 50 per cent. According to the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI), shrimp exports worth USD 2 billion to the US face major disruptions due to the higher duties imposed by President Donald Trump. In 2024, India exported USD 2.8 billion worth of shrimp to the US and has shipped USD 500 million so far this year. SEAI secretary general K. N. Raghavan noted that the new tariffs make Indian seafood far less competitive compared with China, Vietnam and Thailand, which face US duties of only 20–30 per cent. Rane maintained that the increased US tariff on shrimp presents an opportunity to strengthen India’s domestic market.
