India restored the status of the technical mission of India in Kabul to that of a full-fledged embassy on Tuesday, underscoring its resolve to “deepen” its bilateral engagement with Afghanistan, the Ministry of External Affairs has said.
“In keeping with the decision announced during the recent visit of the Afghan Foreign Minister to India, the government is restoring the status of the technical mission of India in Kabul to that of embassy of India in Afghanistan with immediate effect,” the MEA statement noted.
This decision underscores India’s resolve to deepen its bilateral engagement with the Afghan side in all spheres of mutual interest, it added.
India’s embassy in Kabul will further augment India’s contribution to Afghanistan’s comprehensive development, humanitarian assistance, and capacity-building initiatives, in keeping with the priorities and aspirations of Afghan society, it said.
During Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit earlier this month, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar also announced that India was now ready to commit to six new projects, in addition to repair and maintenance of the older ones, and gift 20 ambulances to the country as a gesture of good will.
Muttaqi told journalists in India that Kabul will also send diplomats to the country as part of step-by-step efforts to improve bilateral ties.
