General New offerings started May 1 in Baker City

BAKER CITY — India’s popular dishes are now on the menu at the Sunridge Bar & Grill in Baker City.

“Our vision is to have good Indian food for the people of Baker to experience,” said Soham Gavankar, general manager at the Best Western Sunridge Inn, which includes the adjacent restaurant. “We’re trying to make the menu as authentic as possible, but India is a big country.”

This is, he said, the only Indian restaurant in Eastern Oregon, except for a food truck in Ontario. The new menu debuted May 1.

“People are loving it,” Gavankar said. “It’s a different cuisine for the people of Baker City, it’s a different experience.”

He said they included some of India’s better-known dishes.

“People who know Indian cuisine like butter chicken,” he said.

Other dishes include chicken shawarma, chicken tikka, biryani (chicken or goat), and a variety of vegetarian meals. Desserts and beverages are on the menu too, such as masala chai and mango lassi.

The featured entrees are traditional to north and south India, as well as street food found in major cities, Gavankar said.

The restaurant offers an American menu as well — burgers, steaks, pork chops, salads, pasta, seafood, chicken wings and more.

Gavankar said a few items are “fusion,” such as chicken wings tossed in Indian sauces.

The ingredients

Not all the needed ingredients are easy to find in Baker City, Gavankar said, so that means shopping trips to Boise, Seattle or Portland.

Indian food relies on spices — cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, cloves and curry — as well as garlic, tomatoes, onions, anise and black pepper.

He said the recipes aren’t too spicy.

“We’ve made it the standard spice level — it’s very subtle,” he said.

The details

The Sunridge Bar & Grill, 1 Sunridge Lane, is north of Campbell Street near Interstate 84.

The restaurant is open seven days a week from noon to 9 p.m. Diners can sit inside, or on the outdoor patio.

Gavankar said they will soon start posting photos and videos about the Indian dishes on the Sunridge’s Facebook page, and plan a grand re-opening in the spring of 2026.

Also, the restaurant will soon be on DoorDash.
