Congress MP Ravi writes to Aviation Minister Naidu, flags severe disruptions in aviation sector
Amid widespread disruptions in IndiGo airline services, Telangana Congress MP Mallu Ravi on Friday wrote to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, flagging what he described as severe and unprecedented turmoil in India’s aviation sector following the carrier’s massive operational breakdown.
In his letter, Mr. Ravi cited the cancellation or delay of over 550 flights nationwide and a sharp fall in IndiGo’s on-time performance (OTP) to 19.7%. He warned that the incident had exposed structural vulnerabilities within the aviation ecosystem and highlighted the risks of overreliance on a single dominant private airline.
“It is to bring to your immediate attention the serious and unprecedented disruptions currently affecting India’s aviation sector. The recent developments have exposed critical vulnerabilities that demand urgent corrective measures from the Government of India,” he wrote.

Airfares skyrocket: Kolkata-Mumbai flights cost ₹90,000; Mumbai-Bhubaneswar ₹84,000
Airfares reached levels never seen before on Friday, with a one-way one-stop economy-class SpiceJet Kolkata-Mumbai flight ticket for December 6 costing up to ₹90,000, and a similar ticket of Air India for Mumbai-Bhubaneswar going up to ₹84,485, according to the airlines’ websites.
A similar trend was noted on many other high-traffic routes.
With IndiGo cancelling over 1,000 flights on Friday owing to crew shortage as the second phase of the pilots flight duty and rest period norms kicked in, huge capacity was out of the market, leading to airfares tripling and quadrupling from over the normal range, a travel industry executive said.
“The situation is such that you can’t predict what are going to be the ticket prices when you book a flight. It may be two times, three times or even more than the normal fare range,” he said.

As per a PIB release, the decision was taken to ensure smooth travel and to provide adequate accommodation to stranded and waiting passengers as air travel disruptions led to a sudden surge in rail bookings.

Congress slams Modi government as IndiGo cancellations spark nationwide disruption
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday blamed the large-scale disruptions at IndiGo on what he called the Centre’s “monopoly model”, arguing that India needs fair competition instead of “match-fixing monopolies”.
With IndiGo cancelling nearly 1,000 flights on Friday, creating chaos at airports and leaving thousands of passengers stranded, Mr. Gandhi said ordinary travellers were paying the price for policy failures.

“Government should intervene…”: SP MP Dimple Yadav on air fares hike amid IndiGo flight delays
Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav on Friday addressed the increasing air fares amid the nationwide IndiGo flight delays and cancellations. She slammed the aviation sector, stating that airlines are operating arbitrarily and urging the government to intervene.
“It is being seen that there is a huge increase in air fares. Airlines are operating in an arbitrary manner… The government should intervene in this… And if the government does not intervene, then this kind of attitude will continue…,” said the SP MP.
A large number of passengers are facing inconvenience across the country, as IndiGo flights are facing delays and cancellations. Many travellers are stranded at airports, with several complaints of negligence, unresponsiveness, and staff shortages on IndiGo’s part.
A passenger from Bhubaneswar shared, “…We are travelling with a differently abled kid and a senior citizen… The customer care number of IndiGo is not working… The prices of other flight tickets have increased… If tickets have to be cancelled, they are showing non-refundable until these people say that it is their mistake.”

This is management failure, govt policy was finalised year ago: Aviation Expert Harsh Vardhan
Aviation Expert Harsh Vardhan held IndiGo Management responsible for disruptions to its operations, leading to severe delays and congestion at major airports across the country, and said that the management should have taken proactive steps, as the Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) policy was finalised a year ago.
Speaking to ANI, Harsh Vardhan said, “It’s a very unprecedented situation in the aviation industry. Passengers have been suffering since last three days. This is peak tourist, wedding and business season. IndiGo’s explanation is that because the government enforced a new flight and duty time limitation policy so this has suddenly caused problems. This is a management failure. Management should have taken proactive steps because the government policy didn’t come about in 24 hours. It was deliberate for years. Then a year ago, the policy was finalised.”
He further said that the soft launch was done on July 1, 2025 and the full roll out was done on November 1, 2025.

IndiGo expects normalcy to return from December 10
On a day when IndiGo cancelled more than 1,000 flights, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on Friday said the situation is anticipated to normalise between December 10-15.
In his first video message since the disruptions began, Mr. Elbers apologised for the major inconvenience caused to the passengers due to the disruptions.
“Regrettably, earlier measures of the last few days have proven not to be enough. So we decided today for a reboot of all our systems and schedules, resulting in the highest number of cancellations so far, but imperative for progressive improvements starting tomorrow onwards.”
“With these actions, we expect tomorrow to have cancellations below 1,000. The support of DGCA, in providing specific FDTL implementation relief, is of great help,” Mr. Elbers said.

Why IndiGo has delayed, cancelled hundreds of flights
Issuing several statements over the past few days, IndiGo has blamed several factors for the mass delays and cancellations. On Wednesday, the airline said “minor technology glitches, schedule changes linked to the winter season, adverse weather conditions, increased congestion in the aviation system and the implementation of updated crew rostering rules (FDTL) had a negative compounding impact on our operations in a way that was not feasible to be anticipated.”

‘IndiGo didn’t take off — but my stress levels did’
It is 6.30 in the morning and I am already hassled. Even as I wait patiently outside Chennai Airport to board an IndiGo flight to Bengaluru, the person behind me in the queue is pushing, in order to get ahead.
I tell him, gently, “Hey, my flight is at 8am. I’m waiting.” He taps my shoulder gingerly and says, “Hey, my flight was last night at 8. I’ve been waiting for too long, beta.”
I am wide awake now. Surrounded by hundreds of people trying to get into the airport — most of them with valid tickets and boarding passes — the scene at Chennai Airport resembles a busy, noisy market, filled with chaos and confusion.
