If anyone was going to bring back 2000’s Hip-Hop the right way, fans are clearly glad it was Metro Boomin. The super-producer didn’t just drop A Futuristic Summa — a time machine straight from the Y2K era — he celebrated it with intention.

On Monday night (Aug 4), Metro transformed Brooklyn’s Xanadu roller rink into a full-blown throwback experience, inviting guests into his personal vision of what the early 2000s sounded and felt like. The rink was completely transformed into a dreamscape: think sweatbands over Du-rags, oversized jerseys with white tees underneath, ankle-length jean shorts, crispy Air Force 1s, bandanas, video vixen outfits, jersey dresses, rimless shades, and more.

The atmosphere masterfully felt like one of those random wild college club nights, but this time, the drinks and the food were free and nobody was worried about making it to class the next morning. DJ Spinz controlled the vibe with a handful of tracks from A Futuristic Summa, and classic bops as the crowd roll bounced, danced, and celebrated the nostalgic LP.

Metro eventually arrived in style, dressed in a RL Racing polo shirt, Ralph Lauren hat with an American flag bandana underneath, shorts, Timberland boots, and sweater tied around his neck. He was also accompanied by a crew of his collaborators and special guests including Travis Porter, Joey Bada$$, JID, Young Dro, J Money, and many more.

A Futuristic Summa (hosted by DJ Spinz) — which dropped on Friday (Aug. 1) — plays like a love letter to the era of Hip-Hop when social media captions were cryptic, Limewire was the plug for your own custom CD, knowing every snap dance was mandatory, and being able to twerk was a life skill. The tracklist is stacked with names that helped define that time including Yung LA, Rocko, Travis Porter, Roscoe Dash, J Money, Young Dro, Waka Flocka Flame, and more.

A bold, but creative pivot for Metro Boomin, the album comes after he spent 2024 dominating with We Don’t Trust You — his hit collab album with Future. The LP gave us standouts like “Type Sh*t” and the now-infamous “Like That” — which sparked the rap feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Even if A Futuristic Summa isn’t chasing chart placements like the success of his last album, it’s already winning by being a mood that we needed.
