Synopsis
US President Donald Trump suggested Iran could join the Abraham Accords. His remarks came over three months after the Israel-Iran proxy war, which occurred in June 2025. Trump also secured Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s support for a Gaza peace plan. The proposal aimed to end a two-year conflict. It included a ceasefire and hostage exchange. Hamas’ acceptance remained uncertain.
APUS President Donald Trump said on Monday (September 29, 2025) that he believes Iran could join the Abraham Accords, a peace agreement signed during Trump’s first term in office under which Israel normalized diplomatic relations with multiple Arab nations.
“Who knows, maybe even Iran can get in there,” news agency Reuters quoted Trump as saying at a White House press conference beside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I think they’re going to be open to it. I really believe that. But they could be a member.”
“We hope we’re going to be able to get along with Iran,” the US president said. The proposition seems like a far-fetched dream given the deep and historic enmity between the two Middle East countries. Trump’s remarks come over three months after Israel and Iran entered into a proxy war, after Israel launched air strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites.
General Israel-Iran proxy war
Key nuclear scientists and military commanders were killed in the attack. The intense conflict between the two countries lasted 12 days, starting on June 13, 2025.
According to Al Jazeera, more than 200 Israeli fighter jets struck more than 100 nuclear and military facilities, along with residential neighborhoods across the country. Following Israel’s attack, Iran retaliated with hundreds of ballistic missiles against Israeli cities and the exchange continued for days leading to casualties on both sides. The US joined the clash on June 22, 2025, with strikes on Iran’s Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan nuclear facilities.
Despite the recent escalation between the Middle East nations, Trump seemed hopeful about expanding the Abraham Accords.
“I said, I bet you at some point, Iran will be a member of the Accords. And little did I realize it was going to take this turn. That was some turn we did with the B-2s. But I think they might very well be there,” he said, referring to the bombing run on Iranian nuclear facilities in June, 2025.
What are Abraham Accords?
The Abraham Accords were signed at the White House in September 2020, during Trump’s first administration. It represented a landmark achievement in American and Middle Eastern diplomacy. The agreements led to peace agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco.
Gaza Peace Plan
Meanwhile, the US president secured Netanyahu’s backing on Monday for a Gaza peace proposal to end a nearly two-year-old war in the Palestinian enclave, but questions loomed over whether Hamas would accept the plan.
Speaking at a joint White House press conference, Trump said they were “beyond very close” to an elusive peace deal, but he warned the Islamist group that Israel would have full U.S. support to take whatever action it deemed necessary if the militants rejected what he has offered.
While Netanyahu was in Washington to meet Trump for pivotal talks, the White House released a 20-point document that calls for a ceasefire, an exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, a staged Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament, and a transitional government led by an international body.
Trump thanked Netanyahu “for agreeing to the plan and for trusting that if we work together, we can bring an end to the death and destruction that we’ve seen for so many years, decades, even centuries, and begin a new chapter of security, peace, and prosperity for the entire region.”
