Is Brian Thomas Jr. Hurt? Breaking Down the Jaguars WR’s Slow Start in Week 3 and Early-Season Struggles

The Jacksonville Jaguars lost a heartbreaker to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2. Brian Thomas Jr. struggled in that game, and this has carried over to Week 3. The Jaguars are tied at 10-10 with the Houston Texans, but Thomas has been a non-factor once again.

What Happened to Brian Thomas Jr.?

Thomas has been very quiet against the Texans in Week 3 as He has struggled to reel in his targets.

The Jaguars’ offense hasn’t been very effective today, with only 10 points on the scoreboard. They are holding a late lead against the Texans, as the Texans’ offense has been even worse.

Brian Thomas Jr. has to be better, this is a catch a player of his caliber should make every week.

Great play by Stingley Jr. but that’s just lack of concentration by BTJ. pic.twitter.com/JL8myzF4OF

Thomas has one catch for nine yards on five targets. After a very promising rookie season, he has been very disappointing in 2025. The Jaguars cannot put the Texans to bed and are letting them hang around for the Texans to potentially steal a win.

Houston really needs this win, and stealing a divisional win from the Jaguars would be massive.

Thomas’ Early Season Performance

Thomas is catching a lot of heat for his performances. He made some key drops and missed plays last week, which cost the Jaguars. He had the opportunity to secure a pivotal first down late against the Bengals, but he dropped it. This drive ended in a turnover on downs right near the goal line, where the Bengals capitalized on his mistake for the win.

Now, he has followed up his poor performance with another subpar performance. The Jaguars need him to be that explosive weapon for the offense that he was in 2024, even though the Jaguars didn’t have team success.

Thomas had 1,342 receiving yards in his rookie season and was one of the best receivers in the NFL in 2024. The problem is that this production has been missing all season for Thomas. In the two games prior to the game against the Texans, Thomas had five catches for just 60 yards.

He’s only adding nine yards and one catch to his season tally. He was supposed to make a sophomore leap, but it’s clear right now that he’s in a sophomore slump. It doesn’t look pretty for Thomas with drops, some lazy efforts, and limited production. This needs to change for the Jaguars if their offense wants to take a step forward under new head coach Liam Coen.
